Photos: Seasons On Ravenwood Deploying Pirate Ghost Ship For One More Halloween After Receiving Multiple Complaints

The Seasons on Ravenwood’s famed ghost pirate ship is making one more appearance this Halloween for trick-or-treaters to explore the front-yard exhibit before being permanently retired due to anonymous complaints.

The closure was announced by Jenn and Braden Glasbergen, who run Seasons on Ravenwood.

The couple put out four extravagant seasonal displays a year which include a dinosaur park, Easter, Halloween and Christmas display on their front lawn on 1723 Ravenwood Dr.

The decision to retire the pirate ship came after the Glasbergens received numerous threats and warnings of legal action for the displays allegedly being a safety hazard.

“We've decided that given some of the comments that we received, it's time to move on from the pirate ship,” explained Braden.

While the couple has received overwhelming support for the good the displays have done, the Glasbergens refuse to deal with the negativity affiliated with the display.

“We know that there's not a lot of teeth to it but it's just aggravation that nobody wants to deal so we're decided that the time is appropriate for us to hang it up for the pirate ship,” said Braden.

According to Glasbergens, they received messages claiming their decorations cause traffic hazards since they are a distraction and could result in vehicular accidents.

“We've done all we could with it as safe as possible when people come to visit it but a lot of comments we've been receiving is people on the way to the pirate ship, there are concerns around the traffic on Ravenwood and people might be getting hit,” said Braden.

Signs and flags — including a 15-footer visible from Parkhill Road — have been posted to help notify traffic to slow down. Posters are also plastered throughout the display to ensure safety when visitors are touring through the exhibit.

Initially, they decided not to put the pirate ship on display after complaints back in June. Overwhelming support persuaded the family to put up the pirate ship again in a Facebook post in late August. It also gave the community one last chance to take photos, videos and create memories with the ship before it gets permanently sidelined.

“There's been such an outpouring of support for the ship and the community loves it. The people who do love it, love it a lot,” said Braden. “We've talked to our town councillor Matt Crowley, who's been fielding a lot of calls in support of the pirate ship and he's brought those positive reinforcements forward and the neighbours have a great time with it.”

The public is invited to visit the pirate ship until it gets taken down during the first week of November. The family continues collecting food or monetary donations to support St. Vincent de Paul, which they have been doing since running Seasons on Ravenwood four years ago while the ship is on display.

After the ship has run its course, it will change ownership as the Glasbergens have sold it to an out-of-town buyer.

Jenn and Braden say they have loved and appreciated the community’s support over the years and will not forget the positivity given to them over the last four years.

“It's overwhelming, the positive support that we get,” said Braden. The fact that we've reached that many people, that we've touched that many people just because we wanted to put up some seasonal displays and have a little bit of fun. It's been a great outpouring that way.”

Couple Receives Free Air Conditioner and Furnace Installation Through 'Feel the Love' After Being Nominated As Outstanding Community Member

The community showed gratitude for good Samaritans Ken and Anna Chesher as they received a free air conditioner and furnace through Lennox’s ‘Feel the Love’ program installed at their house on Friday morning.

The continental program encourages anyone to nominate an outstanding community member who is always giving back but needs a helping hand in replacing their HVAC equipment

According to Chesher’s nomination, Ken was known as the perfect neighbour and community member.

“If anyone in the neighbourhood ever needed help shovelling their driveways, cutting their grass or even just bringing in their garbage cans from the curb, Ken was the first one to volunteer,” according to the nomination. “Ken was always the first person the neighbours would call when they needed help with anything. Sometimes, when neighbours would move away, they would even leave Ken’s contact information for the new homeowner in case they ever needed assistance with anything too.”

Ken’s offer to help others was his way of getting to know his community better.

“I always try to meet all of them and we've had very good neighbours,” explained Chesher.

The 74-year-old Ken and Anna had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. However, Ken’s health has deteriorated over the past decade, including an infection and breaking his ankle on three separate occasions. He has been unable to help others with physical labour for the last few years due to his injuries and needs a cane to help him walk.

All the community work has paid off as neighbours are starting to pitch in and help the Chesher household.

“My neighbours are very good. They're cutting my lawn for me and doing snowblowing,” said Ken.

The installation was done by Peterborough Refrigeration who were collecting nominations in Peterborough and the surrounding area for the program. The company has gathered nominations annually since 2020 and is in its fourth year in the program.

“We started this program as another way to give back to our community,” said Gord Conroy, Peterborough Refrigeration owner. “When I started my business, I named it Peterborough Refrigeration because I knew we wanted to be an important part of this community. This is one of the ways we like to give back to the community who has supported us for so many years.” 

“The reason I enjoy participating in the Feel the Love program through Lennox and Peterborough Refrigeration is because I get to help the community,” said Chris Galachiuk, Peterborough Refrigeration lead installer. “It also allows us to connect and give back to all the wonderful people we come into contact with through our work as well as around the town.” 

Peterborough Refrigeration collected nominations up until the end of August.

Gauvreau CPA Kickstarts Peterborough Bigs Children With 101 Filled Knapsacks For Back-To-School

The children of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peterborough (Peterborough Bigs) are getting a head start for their classes this September as they were given 101 backpacks filled with school supplies by accounting firm Gauvreau CPA on Friday.

The initiative, ‘Gear Up for Good,’ began last year as 73 backpacks were given to local kids affiliated with Peterborough Bigs. New this year, Gauvreau CPA also included complimentary haircuts.

Local promotional supplier Ricart Branded Apparel and Promo, donated water bottles as part of the fully-loaded backpacks.

“Every child deserves the chance to excel in their education and pursue their dreams,” said Robert Gauvreau, Gauvreau CPA founder. “We are humbled by the support of Ricart and our community and we're determined to make this year's 'Gear Up for Good' campaign even more impactful than before.”

Children and parents picked up the supplies throughout the day and selected their knapsacks on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of these incredible kids,” said Gauvreau. “By joining forces, we're not only equipping them with school supplies but also with the belief that their dreams are worth pursuing.”

4th Line Theatre Presents: The Cavan Blazers

Millbrook’s 4th Line Theatre presents ‘The Cavan Blazers,’ written by Robert Winslow and directed by Kim Blackwell. 

It is a gritty, intense play that has the audience on the edge of its seat from start to finish. This drama chronicles the religious conflict between Catholic and Protestant Irish settlers in Cavan Township in the early to mid-nineteenth century. Violence erupts when a Protestant vigilante gang known as the Cavan Blazers tries to stop a Catholic settlement from being established.

Lang Pioneer Village Corn Roast

Join the harvest season at the Corn Roast at Lang Pioneer Village Museum.

The family-friendly day has historic demonstrations, live music, and plenty of fire-cooked corn. Tour with a free horse-drawn wagon ride and tour the historic village.

The village will teach visitors how corn was used back then with examples such as corn bread, popcorn, dried corn, corn soups, and corn relish in the Fitzpatrick House, and sample some Johnny cake with maple syrup in the Milburn House.

The village will have demonstrations including threshing, bagging, fanning mill and corn grinding.

Traditional music is being performed by Lotus and Luke from the Weaver Shop porch.

A corn-on-the-cob eating contest taking place on the Village Green. Corn crafts and corn hole by the Ayotte Cabin are some activities that will be run.

Tragic Tales – Little Lake Cemetery

On this tour, you will hear about the tragedy of the Turnbull Building collapse and discover details about the 1916 Quaker Fire that you may not know. Additional stories center on the untimely demise of little Freddie McMaster, the amazing life and career of strongman Daniel McDonald, and the burial of Col. Alexander McDonell, a Catholic, who was supposed to be interred outside St. Peters Cemetery but now has a prominent place near the Little Lake Cemetery Chapel.

Art Gallery Of Peterborough Presents: Reciprocity: Alice Teichert

Alice Teichert’s paintings are known for their holographic depth and unique luminosity, for their visual poetry and multi-faceted proximity to music. In this survey exhibition spanning four decades of practice, Teichert uses line, shape, and colour to push the edges of legibility to open new realms of dialogue.

Multidisciplinary artist Alice Teichert studied music, philosophy, visual poetry, visual arts, and printmaking in Belgium and France. She works from her studio in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. Since 1989, she has built an international career with over 30 solo exhibitions in France, Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Australia. Known for her bold colours and layered transparencies interspersed with script-like line drawings, Teichert’s paintings are noted for their holographic depth. Her works are held in many corporate, private, and public collections including the MacLaren Art Centre, Global Affairs Canada, the Musée de la Ville de Valence (F) and the Museumsquartier of Lübeck (D).

Fifth Annual Lock & Paddle

Parks Canada’s fifth-annual Lock & Paddle event is welcoming back paddlers and spectators at the Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site of Canada this Saturday at 3 p.m.

This year’s theme ‘Lift Your Spirits,’ invites paddlers and attendees to show us what makes them happy! Paddlers get to experience going down the Lift Locks and paddling through the canal. This free all-ages event invites anyone to decorate their vessel, wear a costume or have fun.

To participate, registrants can go apply online.

Beginners or those with accessibility needs can enter the waterway at the Visitor Centre on-site at the event. Canoes can be launched at the following places:

HunTer Fondo

We are excited to invite you to join us for an unforgettable ride in memory of John Hunter, a beloved local cycling enthusiast who passed away in 2021. John was a local legend, known and loved far beyond our community for his dedication to cycling and the Peterborough Cycling Club (PCC). To honour his memory, we’re organizing The HunTer Fondo, an event that aims to bring together 250 local and regional riders for a great cause.

Funds raised from this event will support Peterborough Regional Hospital Centre, Campbellford Memorial Hospital, and Peterborough Cycling Club. We’ve designed three routes for cyclists of all levels: the 40K Trial Heaven Ride, 65K Frappe le Rue and the thrilling 125K “It’s going to be a fun ride.” All rides will start and finish at Ashburnham Memorial Park, followed by a BBQ and social at the Heritage Pavilion at the museum.

The Hunter Fondo’s 2023 support of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation & Campbellford Memorial Hospital (CMH) will help shape the future of cardiac care in our region – expanding cardiac services at PRHC to empower world-class treatment, close to home.

Peterborough Folk Festival

Join us at Nicholls Oval Park for this annual celebration of music, culture and community. Admission to our inclusive and accessible festival is free, with donations encouraged and appreciated. You can donate at the festival to the friendly volunteers in yellow T-shirts, or anytime (with instant tax receipts for donations of $25 and up) via our CanadaHelps page here. Thank you!

With four stages of live music and lots of other activities, the festival has something for everyone. The Artisan Village features local artisan and craft vendors and community organizations. The Children’s Village has activities and children’s performers. Visit the Food Village to sample foods from a variety of local vendors and the Cameron’s Pavilion to wet your whistle while listening to live music on the Pavilion Stage or on the Main Stage.

The festival gets underway both days at 11:00 am with the Children’s Village, Artisan Village, Food Vendors and Cameron’s Pavilion. Live music begins on the Generation Solar Stage and Cameron’s Pavilion Stage at 12 noon.

Since 1989, she has built an international career with over 30 solo exhibitions in France, Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Australia. Known for her bold colours and layered transparencies interspersed with script-like line drawings, Teichert’s paintings are noted for their holographic depth. Her works are held in many corporate, private, and public collections including the MacLaren Art Centre, Global Affairs Canada, the Musée de la Ville de Valence (F) and the Museumsquartier of Lübeck (D).

Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Tim & The Glory Boys

Peterborough Musicfest closes out its 36th summer season welcoming explosive Canadian country/bluegrass band Tim & The Glory Boys to Del Crary Park.

Self-described as “a Canadian gang of backwoods hillbillies with world-class facial hair and infectious on-stage energy,” the two-time Juno Award-winning band, and 2021 CCMA Group of the Year and Rising Star nominees, have toured for a decade, sharing the stage with top country, roots and gospel music acts.

Formed in 2013, the band sees front man Tim Neufeld superbly backed by his Glory Boys brethren, among them Colin Trask (dobro/percussion) and Brenton Thorvaldslon (banjo/guitar).

The band’s debut full-length self-titled album released just past in April features five songs that have already achieved Top 40 country radio status and generated some 30 million streams. When You Know You Know has been certified gold with three other tracks – Me Without You, Without A Prayer and Float – appearing on Top 10 playlists. The band’s latest single release is Take Me Backroad, featuring High Valley.

In April 2023, quilled birch bark makaks made by women of Rice Lake Village (now Hiawatha First Nation) will arrive at the Peterborough Museum & Archives (PMA) for an extended loan visit from the

Royal Collection Trust in England, where they have been cared for since they were given to the young Prince of Wales in 1860. The makaks will be exhibited and will be the focus of activities: workshops on

quillwork, Michi Saagiig Anishnaabemowin, special tours of the exhibit, and some visits in which participants will be able to gently touch them.

Dr Lori Beavis (Hiawatha) and Dr Laura Peers curate the To Honour and Respect project, with a Planning Circle including Gimaakwe Laurie Carr (Hiawatha), Kim Muskratt (Hiawatha), Veronica King-Jamieson

(Mississaugas of the Credit) and others. The project is funded by the Museum Assistance Program (Department of Canadian Heritage), Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and Hiawatha First Nation, with in-kind contributions by the City of Peterborough and the Peterborough Museum & Archives, whose staff will care for the makaks during their visit. Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Fandango - ZZ Top Tribute

ZZ Top tribute act Fandango headlines at Del Crary Park.

Formed in the mid 1990s by brothers Geoff and Chris Dahl, joined by drummer Perry Weido, Fandango was originally part of Legends Live, a rock and pop music theatre production that toured North America. That was followed by residencies in Las Vegas and Myrtle Beach.

Now, trademark beards and sunglasses in place, Fandango is back on the circuit, bringing the timeless blues-rock music of “that little band from Texas” to venues, casinos and festivals throughout North America.

Formed in 1969 in Houston, ZZ Top – Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill – released 15 albums and piled up an estimated 50 million record sales, earning the trio induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Notable hits include Tube Snake Boogie, Gimme All Your Lovin’, Sharp Dressed Man and Legs.
