One Man and Two Teens Facing Assault Charges After Another Person Was Shot In the Leg

Three people including two teenagers are facing several charges after an incident on Tuesday evening.

At roughly 7 p.m., officers conducted a well-being check at a residence on Fairbairn Street in Peterborough. 

Upon knocking on the door, a 24-year-old man exited the residence with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was treated at the scene by EMS and taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment. 

Police learned there were more people in the residence.  Officers with the Emergency Response Team, K9 and RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) Units set up and the residence was cleared by officers.

As a result of the incident,

A 22-year-old St.Catharines man was arrested and charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault

  • Assault with a Weapon

  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking

A 16-year-old Whitby male was arrested and charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault

  • Assault with a Weapon

  • Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking

A 15-year-old Ajax male was arrested and charged with:

  •  Aggravated Assault

  • Assault with a Weapon

All three accused are being held in custody and will appear in court on Wednesday.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, two of the names cannot be released.

During the arrests, officers seized:

  • 28.5 grams of fentanyl

  • Canadian currency

Peterborough Police will remain at the scene until the investigation is completed.

Woman Charged With Arson After Allegedly Setting Multiple Garbage Bins On Fire

A 32-year-old Peterborough woman is facing arson charges after allegedly lighting several garbage bin fires late Monday night.

At roughly 11:30 p.m. the Peterborough Police Service started receiving calls to assist the Peterborough Fire Department with multiple fires lit within a short time frame in close proximity to each other. 

Two garbage bins in Millennium Park and one garbage bin each at George Street North and King Street, Charlotte Street and Aylmer and George Street North near Sherbrooke Street were lit according to a police report.

With help from the downtown CCTV footage, Peterborough Police were able to obtain a description of the suspect. Officers canvassed the area and located a woman on a bike matching the person seen on camera in the Reid Street and Simcoe Street area.

The woman was arrested and charged with:

  • Arson - Damage to Property x5

The accused is held in custody and will appear in court on Tuesday.

“The footage from the CCTV Program cameras was instrumental in allowing officers to get a description and make an arrest in this case,” according to a statement in a press release.

Peterborough Police Investigating Shooting at Crystal Drive; Hold and Secure Has Been Lifted

UPDATED: 26-04-24 @ 1:27 p.m.

The Peterborough Police Service are continuing to investigatie a shooting at 572 Crystal Drive near the Otonabee Drive and Bensfort Road area that occurred early Friday morning.

The incident happened at roughly 5 a.m. The suspect is still outstanding and may have a firearm. 

Officers have completed a grid search of the area. The suspect is still outstanding and could still have a firearm.

The Peterborough Police Service believes that this is an isolated incident between parties that are known to each other.

The area has been re-opened and the hold and secure have been lifted for two area schools.

Peterborough Police Investigating Gas Bar Door Glass Being Smashed; Officers Search For Two Suspects

The Peterborough Police Service is investigating after an incident at a Peterborough gas bar on Wednesday morning.

At roughly 3 a.m. on April 24, 2024, officers were called about the front door of a gas bar in the Lansdowne Street West and Rye Street area being smashed. 

When officers arrived, they found the door glass smashed but overall, it was still secure.

Officers searched the area for two people matching the following description:

  • Two males

  • Possibly in the 20s

  • Wearing toques and wearing reddish grey jeans

Peterborough Man Arrested For Exposing Himself At a Downtown Intersection

A 33-year-old Peterborough man is facing indecent act charges after an incident Saturday afternoon.

At roughly 3:45 p.m., officers were called to the area of Hunter Street West and Aylmer Street about a man pacing back and forth at the intersection with his pants down, exposing himself.

Officers located a male who matched the description given to the police. The man resisted arrest and after a short struggle, officers were able to take him into custody.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Indecent Act- public place

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused is currently bound by a probation order with the following condition to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on Sunday.

Peterborough Man Arrested On Warrant After Trying to Flee From Police

A 50-year-old Peterborough man was arrested on a warrant after an incident early Friday morning.

At roughly 1:15 a.m., officers were called to the area of Princess Street and Lock Street about a suspicious person in a backyard.

Upon arrival, officers spotted a man matching the description given to police but he left the area upon seeing police. K9 Gryphon was called in and began a track, leading officers to a nearby address. The suspect was located on a back porch.

The suspect was arrested on the strength of the warrant.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on May 7.

Peterborough Police Issue Public Warning of Springtime Paving Scam

The Peterborough Police Service is issuing a warning to homeowners to be aware of springtime scammers involving paving/driveway sealant scams announced on Wednesday.

At this time of year, the Service often receives reports of these scams where they say they have some leftover materials from another job and can fix or seal your driveway for cash.

Homeowners are reminded to:

  • Not pay for work up front

  • Only pay for completed work

  • Say no, if you’re unsure

  • Let someone you trust know about the deal and get a second opinion

Peterborough Man Facing Indecent Act Charge After Exposing Himself In A Parking Lot

A 41-year-old Peterborough man is facing an indecent act charge after an incident Monday night.

At roughly 8:20 p.m., officers were called to the George Street North and Townsend Street area about a male in a parking lot. He was allegedly exposing himself and masturbating in front of businesses. 

When police arrived, officers spotted a man matching the description given to police and took him into custody. It was learned that the man was wanted on warrants in other jurisdictions.  

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Indecent Act – Public Place

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on April 30.

The accused was then turned over to officers in the jurisdiction in which he was wanted.

Peterborough Police Warn Public of Uptick In Thefts From Vehicle Reports

The Peterborough Police Service has noticed an increase in the number of reports of thefts from vehicles in the last few weeks.

Reports have come in from businesses and residences across the city. In some cases, cars have been rifled through and in other cases, windows have been smashed and items have been taken. 

Anyone experiencing this type of incident or noticing any suspicious activity is asked to report it to the police.

Peterborough Lay Charges On Cavan-Monaghan Man For Allegedly Shooting An Arrow at a Cat

A 53-year-old Township of Cavan-Monaghan man has been charged with allegedly shooting an arrow at a cat which led to being euthanized last month.

At roughly 4:30 p.m. on March 24, a resident called claiming their cat had been shot with an arrow. When police arrived in the Deyell Line and County Road 10 area, officers learned the cat was found injured on a driveway, taken to a vet and was euthanized due to its injuries.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal (Criminal Code of Canada)

  • Distress - causing distress (Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act)

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on April 23.
