Peterborough Man Arrested After a Break-and-Enter And Using a Stolen Credit Card

A 48-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges concerning a residential break and enter last month.

On Aug. 28, an incident occurred at a residence near Weller Street and Monaghan Street. Officers learned that someone had entered the home overnight and taken a purse containing credit cards.

Police learned that one of the cards was used at a Peterborough convenience store and, after an investigation, identified a suspect.

At roughly 6:50 p.m. on Thursday, officers with the Street Crime Unit were in downtown Peterborough and spotted the suspect on a bicycle. He was taken into custody without incident.

The man arrested and charged with:

• Break, Enter and Commit

• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000

• Use of Credit Card

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Friday.

Peterborough Police Release Two Names Who Were Arrested For Possession For Trafficking Charges; Drugs, a Firearm and Cash Were Seized

Two people are facing multiple possession charges after an investigation on 360 Reid St. and the surrounding area as reported on Thursday.

The investigation was conducted by Peterborough Police Service Intelligence, Crime Analyst and Drug Units, with assistance of the Street Crime Unit.

The incident follows a previous arrest in May 2024. A firearm, illicit drugs and cash were seized during the investigation. Three additional individuals have been identified as trafficking in controlled substances (fentanyl and cocaine) at this premise. Police say warrants are being sought for their arrests.

Officers with the Drug Unit and the Emergency Response Team executed a search warrant at two residences in Peterborough and a vehicle on Wednesday.

Items seized:

• 428 grams of Cocaine

• 755.8 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine

• 318 grams of Psilocybin

• 1017.1 grams of MDMA

• 154 prescription pills

• Loaded Glock 9mm handgun 

• Over $15,000 Canadian Currency

32-year-old Travis McCanna from Peterborough was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Cocaine

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Methamphetamine

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Oxycodone

• Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000

• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

• Possession of Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm

• Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

37-year-old Tiara Anderson from Peterborough, was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Cocaine

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Methamphetamine

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Percocet

• Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000

• Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

• Possession of Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm

• Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

“I understand the frustration and feelings of being unsafe that many in our community have expressed as it relates to activities that involve the trafficking of illicit substances and the crimes that spring from it,” Stuart Betts, Peterborough Police Chief. “The illicit drug trade is almost always connected with violence, including firearms-related violence. And as you will see, in both incidents mentioned in today’s release firearms were seized by our officers.”

Both of the accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Thursday,

Given the nature of the activity and items seized during this investigation, the names of the accused are being released according to Peterborough Police.

“These arrests also represent the ongoing dedication of our Drug Unit and Street Crime Investigators to disrupt and dismantle these operations in our city,” said Betts. “There can be no tolerance for those who would prey on those who battle addiction, and perpetuate their struggles. To all residents, we will continue to make Your Safety Our Priority.”

Peterborough Police Arrest 17-Year-Old Teen For Hitting Someone With a Hammer For a Sweater

A 17-year-old Peterborough male is facing several charges after striking someone with a hammer during an incident Monday night.

At roughly 10:15 p.m., officers were called to a residence in the Brock Street and Aylmer Street area regarding a dispute between two males who knew each other. 

A male had struck another male in the head with a hammer and demanded his sweater before fleeing the area. The victim was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment. Officers located the teen, who matched the description several blocks away and took him into custody.  During a search after the arrest, officers seized a sweater and a hammer. 

The teen was arrested and charged with:

• Robbery with Weapon

• Assault with a Weapon

• Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Tuesday.

Teenager Dies After Being Struck By a Vehicle

Peterborough Police Service continues to investigate a fatal collision as a 17-year-old male died early Saturday morning.

At roughly 3 a.m., officers were called to the area of North Monaghan Parkway and Dobbin Road after receiving a 9-1-1 call about a pedestrian who was struck. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and provided first aid until first responders arrived. The 17-year-old Township of Cavan-Monaghan male was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre where he succumbed to his injuries.

The road was closed for about eight hours while the Peterborough Police Service Traffic Unit collision reconstruction unit investigated.

Peterborough Teen Charged With Assault On Senior After Verbal Altercation

A 14-year-old Peterborough female teenager is facing an assault charge after an incident Wednesday afternoon.

At roughly 2:15 p.m., officers were called about an incident that happened near the trail behind Paddock Wood.

A verbal dispute between the teen and the 67-year-old victim broke out after the latter asked a group of young people to leave the area.

It escalated where the victim was punched in the face causing her to fall. She was then kicked and punched while on the ground. She was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre as a precaution.   

Through investigation, Peterborough Police Service identified a suspect on Thursday. The female turned herself in.

She was charged with:

• Assault

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 28.

Brampton Man Charged With Impaired Driving With a Suspended License

A 33-year-old Brampton man is facing charges after a single vehicle collision on Wednesday evening.

At roughly 8:30 p.m., officers were called to a single-vehicle rollover in the area of County Road 10 and Sharpe Line.

The driver approached officers, and during the conversation, officers noticed signs of impairment.

During the investigation, Police learned that the driver had a suspended license. EMS assessed him at the scene before being taken into custody. 

The man was arrested and charged with: 

• Operation while impaired - alcohol

• Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

• Driving while under suspension (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 22.

Peterborough Police Searching For Missing Firearm and Suspect After Residential Break and Enter

The Peterborough Police Service is investigating the report of a missing firearm and suspect after a residential break-in Wednesday evening.

Police believe the break-in happened between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. at a home in the Homeward Avenue and Albertus Avenue area on Wednesday.

The firearm is described as: 

• Tavor X95 assault rifle

• 200 rounds of ammunition

Also taken were:

• approximately $20,000 in jewellery

• approximately $1500 in tools

Peterborough Police Service Officer Arrested and Charged With Mischief From Violence On Partner

A Peterborough Police Service officer was arrested and charged with mischief in an adjacent jurisdiction in connection with an intimate partner violence-related incident on Monday.

As a result of the investigation, the officer was charged with:

• Mischief under $5000  

The accused was released on an undertaking and will appear in court in that jurisdiction.

The officer will be reassigned to administrative duties pending the conclusion of the criminal matter according to a press release. As per the provisions contained within the Community Safety and Policing Act, a professional standards misconduct investigation will take place at the conclusion of the criminal proceedings.

“I understand that we, the police, must earn the public’s trust and confidence each and every day, and although this matter is in no way related to the officers’ duties as a police officer, any time criminal charges are laid against an officer it may have an impact on that trust and confidence,” said Stuart Betts, Peterborough Police chief. “Therefore, we ensure the public remains aware of such instances so as to demonstrate our commitment to holding ourselves accountable.”

In accordance with all procedures and to ensure the victim's privacy, Peterborough Police does not publish the name of any accused in an intimate partner-related incident unless there is a concern for public safety.

The Police are making no further comment at this time as stated in a press release.

Peterborough Man Arrested For Attempted Murder From Hit-and-Run Incident Wednesday

A 29-year-old Peterborough man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder in connection with a hit-and-run incident from Wednesday.

At roughly 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Investigative Services Unit officers located a suspect in the George Street and Townsend Street area and took him into custody.

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Attempt to commit murder

• Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm

• Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm

• Operation while prohibited

• Fail to Comply with Probation

During the investigation it was learned that the accused was a prohibited driver and bound by a probation order with the following conditions: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court Friday.

Peterborough Police Seek Information Of Motorist Striking Cyclist In Hit-and-Run

The Peterborough Police Service is asking anyone with information about a hit and run to come forward that occurred early Wednesday morning.

At roughly 12:15 a.m., officers were called by EMS about a man who appeared to be the victim of a hit-and-run incident in the Brock Street and Bethune Street area. 

Officers learned that the cyclist was allegedly struck by the vehicle in a parking lot before the latter fled the scene.

The victim was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment and has since been taken to a Toronto area hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
