Shoplifter Arrested By Off-Duty Officer

An off-duty officer, who was grocery shopping, helped the store arrest a 63-year-old Peterborough man in a shoplifting incident Wednesday evening.

At roughly 6 p.m., the officer was in the store located at the intersection of Towerhill Road and Chemong Road and became aware that store staff had stopped a man attempting to leave the store without paying for over $350 worth of items. The officer took the man into custody. 

During the investigation, it was learned that the man was wanted on warrants for assault, assault with a weapon, failure to comply with an undertaking and failure to attend court.

The man was arrested on the strength of the warrants and further charged with:

  • Theft under $5,000

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Thursday.

Suspect Arrested From Series of Thefts Including Construction Equipment

The Peterborough Police Service Street Crime Unit have investigated a series of thefts across the province of Ontario, resulting in charges against a 34-year-old Peterborough man.

Last Wednesday, after an eight-month investigation, the Peterborough Police Service Street Crime Unit conducted a search warrant at a property east of Peterborough.

Officers seized:

  • Skid Steer, confirmed stolen out of North York on Aug. 17, 2024

  • Side-by-side, confirmed stolen off Highway 65 in Cane Township on May 25

  • Commercial generator stolen from the GTA

  • Cube truck, confirmed stolen from Toronto in October of 2022

  • Stolen flatbed trailer

  • .22 calibre rifle

  • Black powder firearm  

  • Crossbow x3 (Seized due to prohibition order)

  • Pellet guns x2 (Seized due to prohibition order)

  • 2.8 grams of Crystal Methamphetamine

  • A quantity of pills (suspected codeine and acetaminophen)

The total value of the stolen property recovered is approximately $255,000. 

The man was charged with:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 x4

  • Operation While Prohibited

  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm

  • Careless Storage of a Firearm

  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order X2

  • Fail to Comply with Release Order

  • Breach of Recognizance

The accused is currently wanted on a warrant in another jurisdiction and at the time of his arrest was bound by a weapons prohibition order to not possess any firearm, crossbow, prohibited weapon, restricted weapon and prohibited device.

The accused is currently bound by several driving prohibitions as well as a recognizance order with the following conditions: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour and to not possess any weapons as defined by the Criminal Code.

They are also bound by a release order with the condition to reside with their surety.

The accused is currently being held in custody as a result of the theft of a skid steer in Toronto on July 22.

“I am very proud of the work by our Street Crime Unit. This has been a lengthy investigation that has resulted in recovery of stolen property and an arrest of an individual who has a history of criminal activity,” said Chief Stuart Betts. “With weapons and drugs recovered along with the stolen equipment, these are crimes and situations that could pose a significant danger in our community. We hope the public recognizes, as we do, that these types of projects are important in helping keep our community safe.”

Attempted Arson Incident Leads To Window Broken For Local Business

The Peterborough Police Service are investigating an attempted arson at a Peterborough business early Monday morning.

At roughly 3:22 a.m., officers were called after a gas can was thrown through a window of the business in a plaza near Lansdowne Street West and Webber Avenue. 

Although the sprinkler system activated, there was no fire but extensive water damage occurred.

Peterborough Man Arrested After Fleeing Police and Discarding Replica Firearm

A 35-year-old Peterborough man wanted on a warrant is facing several charges, including mischief and possession of an unauthorized weapon, after an incident on Thursday morning.

At roughly 9:30 a.m., a K9 officer on general patrol spotted the man riding a bicycle in the Aylmer Street and Murray Street area. The officer attempted to stop him but the cyclist ran, discarding an item as he fled.

Police Constable Wentworth and Police Service Dog Gryphon gave chase, caught up to the man in a nearby alley and took him into custody. Officers retrieved the discarded item which turned out to be a replica handgun. During a search of the man after his arrest, officers also seized three knives.

The suspect was arrested on the strength of the warrant (for Mischief under $5,000 and Fail to Comply with Probation Order) and further charged with:

  • Unauthorized Possession of Weapon

  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused is currently bound by a prohibition order with the following condition: to not possess any weapon or firearms as defined by the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on Thursday.

Two People Charged With Fraud and Theft After Allowing Items to be Taken Without Full Payment

Two Peterborough residents are facing charges after a local business reported multiple incidents involving a former employee.

Through investigation, officers with the Community F.I.R.S.T. Unit learned of 12 incidents between April and June 2025 involving the person, who was an employee at the time and a relative. In the incidents, the employee would not charge the full amount for items or would allow the items to leave without payment. The business lost almost $1,350. 

Officers arrested and charged the following:

A 74-year-old Peterborough man with:

  • Fraud Under $5,000 x8

  • Theft Under $5,000 x3

A 68-year-old Peterborough woman with:

  • Fraud Under $5,000 x5

  • Theft Under $5,000 x3

Both accused were released on undertakings and are scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 2.

Peterborough Man Arrested and Charged After Trying to Flee From Police On Motorcycle

A 29-year-old Peterborough man faces multiple charges after attempting to evade police on Saturday morning.

At roughly 10:45 a.m., an officer on general patrol spotted a suspended driver on a motorcycle. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop but the vehicle took off and ran through two red lights. The officer located the driver at their residence several hours later. 

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Flight from peace officer

  • Dangerous operation

  • Fail to stop for police (Highway Traffic Act)

  • Driving while under suspension (Highway Traffic Act)

  • Red light - fail to stop x2 (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 26.

Two Teenagers Arrested After Incident With Peterborough Police

Two teenagers are facing charges after an incident Wednesday evening.

At roughly 10:30 p.m., officers on bike patrol near the train bridge in the George Street and Dalhousie Street area spotted a 15-year-old female wanted for theft in June.

The youth started resisting arrest, yelling and screaming and causing a disturbance. A 15-year-old male attempted to stop the arrest and swung at an officer before fleeing the scene. He was located by other officers and taken into custody. While at the station, the female kicked a Special Constable. 

The female was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault peace officer x2

  • Assault with intent to resist arrest

  • Cause disturbance

  • Theft under $5000

The male was arrested and charged with:

  • Assault with intent to resist arrest

  • Breach of Recognizance

Both accused were released on an undertaking and are scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 25.

Peterborough Man Charged With Voyeurism Faces Child Porn Charges

A 20-year-old Peterborough man who faced a voyeurism charge at Lansdowne Place in late May is receiving additional charges including possession of child pornography, reported on Monday.

Officers with the Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit of the Peterborough Police Service conducted a search warrant at a Peterborough residence Friday morning.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of Child Pornography

  • Fail to Comply with Undertaking

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court on July 11. 

At this time, Police believe that there are no additional victims and no ongoing public safety concern.

Suspect Charged With Mischief After Smashing Several Business WIndows

A 47-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges after a number of business windows were smashed overnight, early Friday morning.

At roughly 12:50 a.m., officers were called to the area of Hunter Street between Aylmer and George Streets. They located a man matching the description given to police. Police also learned that the suspect was connected to two other incidents in that area.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Mischief - destroys or damages property x3

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order x2

The accused is currently bound by two probation orders with the following condition: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court later that day.

Peterborough Man Arrested and Charged With Multiple Counts of Drug Trafficking

A 48-year-old Peterborough man is facing drug trafficking charges after being arrested on Tuesday.

At roughly 10:50 a.m., after ongoing investigations into drug trafficking in Peterborough, the Peterborough Police Service Drug Unit investigated the area of Reid Street and McDonnel Street. They took a man into custody.

During a search after arrest, officers seized:

  • Seven hydromorphine tablets

  • 1.2 g of Fentanyl

  • 1.4 g of Crack Cocaine

  • A small amount of Canadian currency

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Cocaine

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Fentanyl

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Hydromorphine

  • Trafficking a Schedule I Substance - Cocaine

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 12.
