Peterborough Woman Arrested For Stealing Money From a Vehicle In a Parking Lot

A 33-year-old Peterborough woman faces a theft charge after stealing money from a vehicle Wednesday morning.

At roughly 10:15 a.m., officers were called to a parking lot in the Rink Street and George Street area about a woman going through a vehicle. The vehicle owner attempted to stop the woman but the suspect left the area.

Officers learned that the vehicle had been entered and that some money was gone. During a search of the area, officers located a woman matching the description given to police and took her into custody.

The woman was arrested and charged with:

• Theft Under $5,000

• Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused is currently bound by a probation with the following condition: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

The accused was released on an undertaking with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 10.

Peterborough Police Lay Two Stunt Separate Driving Charges On the Same Day

The Peterborough Police Service Traffic Unit has charged two drivers under the Highway Traffic Act for stunt driving and speeding on Aug. 5.

A 55-year-old male driver towing a trailer was recorded going 121 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone on Lily Lake Road near Eastwood Road. The driver was charged with stunt driving, speeding and failing to surrender a permit for a trailer under the Highway Traffic Act.

In a second case, a 50-year-old female driver was recorded going 98 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone on Lily Lake Road near Eastwood Road. The driver was charged with stunt driving and speeding under the Highway Traffic Act. 

Both drivers had their licenses suspended for 30 days and their vehicles were impounded for 14 days.

Peterborough Police Have Growing Concerns of Increased Recent Hate Bias Incidents

Hate bias incidents have been a growing concern for the Peterborough Police Service after posters from the Dominion Society of Canada have surfaced in recent days.

According to the Peterborough Police, the posters have appeared in the area of Douro Street and Rotary Trail and reflect the group’s stance on immigration, including remigration.

Peterborough Police state that while they understand the posters are controversial and many may not agree with this group's policy stance, the posters do not currently rise to the level of a hate crime.

The Peterborough Police Service wants to be made aware of hate-based incidents and thank those who brought the flyers to their attention.

 “There is no room for hate in our community at any time,” said Stuart Betts, Peterborough Police Service Chief. “The number one goal of the Peterborough Police Service is public safety, and the Service is committed to this goal. In this instance, what we are seeing does not rise to the level of criminality. There are currently laws within the Criminal Code that can assist and lead to charges.  As the community has seen, most recently last week (Aug. 13) when a Peterborough resident was arrested and charged for online comments, when grounds for charges exist, the Peterborough Police Service will apply them.”

Residents can report incidents through the online reporting portal.

Mayor Jeff Leal released the following statement:

“It has come to my attention that the Dominion Society of Canada, an organization identified by the Canadian Anti-Hate Network as a white nationalist group, has been putting up posters across our City.

City staff are following the City’s Reporting Vandalism and Hate Bias Incidents Procedure, which includes notifying the Peterborough Police Service. All incidents that are motivated by hate or bias are addressed with seriousness and sensitivity.

The City of Peterborough and its residents are committed to fostering a community that is welcoming, respectful, safe, and inclusive for all. We want to ensure that Peterborough is a place where everyone feels like they belong.

We have zero tolerance for hate and hate-motivated acts, particularly those motivated by bias, prejudice, or hate toward identifiable groups. Hate is not welcome in our City – full stop.”

Peterborough Man Arrested For Uttering Online Threats; Police Service's First Charged Crime Under New Federal Hate Crime Laws

Fifty-year-old Kevin Goudreau of Peterborough is facing several charges in connection with a series of online threats as the first to be charged under the new federal hate crime laws, announced on Tuesday.

In early August, the Peterborough Police Service learned of a series of online threats against several Peterborough residents. Major Crime Unit officers requested and were granted a search warrant for a Peterborough residence.

Officers executed the search warrant and took a Goudreau into custody on Thursday.

He was charged with:

• Utter Threats Cause Death or Bodily Harm – Motivated by Hatred X2

• Utter Threats Cause Death or Bodily Harm X2

• Fail to comply with Probation Order X5

The accused is currently bound by three probation orders with the following conditions: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour and not to post any information about two of the victims in this case.

The accused appeared in court again on Tuesday.  

Two of the online posts in this case were determined to be motivated by hatred.

Lakefield Man Arrested After Shoplifting and Attempting to Flee On a Bicycle

A 34-year-old Lakefield man is facing a shoplifting charge after an incident on Friday morning.

At roughly 11:45 a.m., officers with Community F.I.R.S.T. were called about a theft in progress at a store in the Park Street and Lansdowne Street area. They learned that the man had left the store on a bicycle. Officers spotted a man matching the description given to police heading northbound on Park Street. The man continued riding his bicycle on the trail and ended up in a parking lot at Monaghan Road and Lansdowne Street. At that time, the officer drew their Conducted Energy Weapon and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Theft under $5,000

The accused was released on an undertaking with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 3.

Peterborough Woman Charged With Mischief After Smashing a Window With a Brick

A 41-year-old Peterborough woman is facing a mischief charge after smashing a window with a brick on Friday morning.

At approximately 3:55 a.m., officers were called to Charlotte Street and George Street about a smashed window. They learned that the window had been smashed with a brick. They located a woman matching the description given to police a short distance away and took her into custody.  

The Peterborough woman was arrested and charged with:

• Mischief Under $ 5,000

• Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused is currently bound by a probation order with the following condition: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

Peterborough Man Wanted On Two Warrants Arrested

A 27-year-old Peterborough man wanted on two warrants was arrested Thursday after calls about suspicious activity on Thursday night.

At roughly 11:40 p.m., officers were called to the area of Erskine Avenue and The Queensway about suspicious activity. They located two men in the area matching the description given to police. During the investigation, officers learned that one of the men was wanted on warrants for failing to appear in court.

As a result, officers took the man into custody on the strength of the warrants.

He was held in custody and appeared in court on Friday.

Ottawa Woman Arrested In Peterborough For Operating Stolen Vehicle

A 40-year-old Ottawa woman is facing a charge after officers were alerted to a stolen vehicle on Wednesday evening.

At roughly 7:20 p.m., officers were alerted by the Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) to a stolen vehicle from the Ottawa area. Officers located the vehicle in a parking lot near Chemong Drive and Milroy Drive, activated their emergency lights, and conducted a high-risk vehicle stop with firearms drawn. Two women exited the vehicle and were taken into custody without incident. One woman was released unconditionally after the investigation.

One woman was arrested and charged with:

• Possession Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000 - in Canada

• Drive Motor Vehicle No License (Highway Traffic Act)

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 3, on the Peterborough matter.

While in custody, it was learned that the woman was wanted in another jurisdiction for:

• Break Enter and Commit/Dwelling House

She was arrested on the strength of the warrant and given a court date of Sept. 18, on that matter.

Peterborough Man Arrested For Assault After Hitting City Vehicle and Officer With a Stick and Headbutting a Bystander

A 56-year-old Peterborough man is facing assault charges after an incident involving a by-law officer and a bystander on Sunday morning.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., officers were called to the area of Hunter Street East and Burnham Street about a disturbance. They learned the City of Peterborough by-law officers were conducting a regular patrol of James Stevenson Park and had asked a man to leave the area as tenting is not allowed on city property. As the by-law officers were leaving, the man approached them with a stick and started striking the by-law vehicle, breaking the windshield and denting the hood. The man also struck a by-law officer with the stick and headbutted a bystander when they tried to help. Officers located the man and took him into custody.

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Assault

• Assault with A Weapon

• Mischief Under $ 5,000

The accused was released on an undertaking with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 3.

Unattended Vehicle Parked On Sidewalk Leads to Drug Possession Charges For Peterborough Man

A 39-year-old Peterborough man is facing drug possession charges after Peterborough Police noticed his vehicle unattended and parked on the sidewalk on Friday evening.

At roughly 7 p.m., bike patrol officers noticed an unattended vehicle parked half on the sidewalk and half on the road in the area of Aylmer Street and Murray Street.  Upon approaching the vehicle, officers noticed drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. The driver returned to the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.

During a search after arrest, officers located and seized:

• 22.8 grams of Cocaine

• Pills

• Drug paraphernalia

• Spring-loaded knife

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order

• Unauthorized Possession of Weapon

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance- Cocaine

• Have care or control of vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available

The accused is currently bound by a lifetime weapons prohibition order.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 27.
