3 Peterborough Siblings Shave Their Heads To Raise Awareness For Pediatric Cancer Research

So many kids around Peterborough have been having their heads shaved and pony tails cut for a great cause: Pedal For Hope. This takes place each April and May, when members of the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police, and Royal Canadian Mounted Police shed their uniforms during their holidays, hop on a bike and pedal more than 1,000 kilometres as "Cops for Cancer" to visit schools around Central Ontario to raise money for pediatric cancer research and awareness about kids living with cancer. Since the first tour in 2005, the Pedal for Hope team has raised more than $2.4 million for pediatric cancer research.

This year's 10th anniversary tour wraps up Saturday (May 17th) with an event at Adam Scott, but on Friday (May 16th) Pedal For Hope bikers arrived at James Strath Public School in Peterborough, and more children had their heads shaved—including Eileen and Joel Kimmett's three kids, Quinn, 10; Riker Kimmett, 8; and Kedron, 6. "I still can't say enough how amazing the Pedal For Hope Team is," Eileen tells us. Her kids are amazing, too. All the hair cut goes to make wigs for kids struggling with cancer. See pics below of Quinn, Riker and Kedron from today...

Diehard Montreal Canadiens Fans Have Great Workout At Y This Morning

Montreal knocked off Boston in Game 7 last night (May 14th) to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Rangers, another showdown of Original 6 teams. Diehard Habs fans across Canada went nuts—including in hockeytown Peterborough. Exhibit A: Tony Caravaggio, Steve Downer, Ron "Crunch" Crossman and John Delorme (all pictured below) at the YMCA of Peterborough, who got their workout in with Habs gear (and rug)—along with PK Subban's jersey on the end machine—this morning. Tony (far left) below is rocking his Bob Gainey jersey, and Steve's in the sleeveless jersey. They even began chanting with other fans in the workout area the Olé, Olé, Olé, Olé chant. —Scott Arnold

The Only Thing Missing With Matilda The Peterborough Square Duck Is A Twitter Account

Too cute, and apparently this mall rat, er, duck, has been coming back for several years... She lives right outside the Dancing Blueberries, and lays her eggs here each year.

Here Is A Wallaby With Her Joey Poking Out Of Her Pouch At Riverview Park & Zoo

This is pretty much the cutest picture ever. The photo was captured by a student zookeeper at Riverview Park & Zoo in Peterborough as the joey was peeking its head out of its mother's pouch. Mother and joey are new arrivals from the Assiniboine Zoo in Winnipeg.

There Are Lonely New Benches In Downtown Peterborough Just Waiting To Be Sat On #BenchesPTBO

[UPDATE May 13th]: We asked City of Peterborough Urban Design Planner Brian Buchardt why some of the benches we're installed facing toward the buildings, and here's what he had to say: "I was able to get the benches for free from the company who recently installed the large burgundy waste and recycling containers in the Downtown. I gave the company the locations for the benches. However, I never dreamed they would install some of them facing the wrong way! We will ask them to come back at some point and have the benches turned around. They may have been following the examples of other municipalities, which have their benches facing inward—rather than outward to the street. The thing is though, benches facing inward are usually much closer to the street. I do not subscribe to this orientation anywhere because personally, I would always want to be facing the action on the street."

-------------------

[ORIGINAL POST: May 12th] The city has installed brand new benches along the sidewalks of our downtown core. Some of the new benches face inward toward buildings. The other benches have views looking outward toward the street. The benches are lonely right now. They want people to sit on them. We’d like to hear your thoughts about the benches. Which ones would you sit on—facing out toward the street or looking in toward the buildings? Or does it depend on your mood? And which bench locations do you prefer around the downtown? Tell us in our comments section below or on our Facebook page. See pictures below...

Style File Four: Look -> What's Your Style Peterborough?

Kris Sieber

Kris Sieber

In the Spotlight: Kris Sieber
Ash's Style File Notes:  I found inspiration for my latest Style File at The Wednesday Market Opening Day. There were a lot of stylin' Peterborough Folk down there, but I chose Kris to be featured. His sporty, earthy style draws from a lot of clothing stores in Peterborough. His shoes are from S.O.S., pants from Plush Boutique, jacket (and bike) from Wild Rock Outfitters, and even his cup of coffee and knit cap are local. It's a delight to photograph someone who has mixed and matched from many of the stores in our downtown core.
What Kris says about his style... "It's functional, so as not to get caught in the bike."
