Peterborough's Art for Awareness is holding open auditions for the musical Rent, to be produced at Showplace Performance Centre in Peterborough, on February 20th to 28th, 2015. Directed by Geoff Bemrose and Sarah Tye, Rent tells the story of a group of struggling artists living in the Lower East Village of New York City under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Its landmark 12 year run on Broadway and multiple awards (not to mention feature film adaptation) have made Rent one of the most beloved and recognizable musicals of the past 20 years. Auditions will be held at Revolutions Dance Studio (159 King Street in Peterborough) on the following dates:

Ross Pryde
To say that 2014 has been a busy year for Fox Law in Peterborough would be an understatement. The firm was established more than 40 years ago by Bill Fox, who still practices as much as ever. Recently, it absorbed the practice of a newly retired local lawyer and it has brought in two new lawyers: Nicole Truman and Ross Pryde.
Ross Pryde, who is moving to Peterborough in August, was born and raised in Aylmer, Ont. He grew up the son of a GM dealership owner, learning the ins and outs of a small business and the importance of customer service. He received his Honours Business Administration degree from the prestigious Richard Ivey School of Business. After his undergrad studies, he moved to Toronto and worked in various capacities for a few of the city’s professional sports franchises, including the Toronto Maple Leafs.
When the 2004 NHL lockout was on the horizon, he saw the writing on the wall and headed for law school in Ottawa. After law school, he served his articling term and practiced as a lawyer in Port Perry.
The move to Peterborough from the community of Columbus, Ont., where he is currently commuting from, will be a great chance for Ross to settle down. Come August, he will be a home owner in our great city, and in September will be marrying his fiancée Jane. The choice to come to Peterborough to practice was made easier by the size of our community, diverse people, and an overall feeling of it being just right.
Ross specializes in quite a few different areas of law, including:
• Business Law – focusing on incorporations, succession planning, and family trust
• Estate Planning – advising clients regarding Wills and Powers of Attorney
• Estate Administration – working with Trustees in dealing with estates
• Real Estate – the buying and selling of residential and commercial properties along with planning applications.
For more than 40 years, Bill Fox has specialized in Business Law, which has made the transition for Ross an easier one coming from the same background. Bill acts for more than 500 companies in and around Peterborough, and is known for his integrity and humility, as well as being a people person. Ross’s goal is to transition smoothly into the firm and take on the same characteristics to grow his practice and provide the best possible legal help to his clients.

Peterborough's Carol Lawless is known for taking beautiful landscape and sky images on Instagram. As she explains to us, "In the fall of 2012, I started driving back and forth to Bobcaygeon for my job as editor of an independent newspaper, The Promoter. I began taking photos of the skies, fields and barns along the Pigeon Lake Road. It was fun for me and I always looked forward to my drive to Bobcaygeon early in the morning and when I would return home usually just before sunset. Pretty soon, I started recording the skies and landscapes of the cities and rural areas I visited when I became a features editor for kawarthaNOW and people looked forward to seeing where i was going, and who I was visiting...
"My friends Nancy Carter, Sylvia Davies and Andrew Wilton believe my photos are a record of Peterborough and the surrounding area," Lawless says, "so they decided to mount and frame the photos for my 50th birthday present." They called it Lawless Landscapes, and organized an exhibit to be shown at Chasing the Cheese in downtown Peterborough in August.
"What's interesting about this exhibit is that I have always taken the photos because they are as much as expression of what I am feeling as they are a record of the landscapes in the county and city of Peterborough," says Lawless.
Lawless Landscapes will be displayed at Chasing the Cheese in downtown Peterborough at 372 Water Street starting August 1 and running through August 24th.
In a matter of hours, the Louis St. Parking Lot is transformed by the Peterborough Downtown Farmers' Market into this beehive of community activity each week...

Water Soldier
Communities along the beautiful and historic Trent-Severn Waterway may not know there is an invasive threat that has crept into the waterbody. The OFAH through its Invading Species Awareness Program wants to raise awareness about a portion of the Trent-Severn near the Hamlet of Trent River, which is home to the only known wild population of the invasive species known as water soldier in all of North America.
Water soldier is used as an ornamental plant in water gardens—the likely source of its introduction to the Trent Severn Waterway. Water soldier forms dense mats of floating vegetation, crowding out native species and decreasing plant biodiversity. It has the potential to alter surrounding water chemistry, which may harm phytoplankton and other aquatic organisms. It can also hinder boating and angling and its sharp, serrated leaf edges can cut swimmers.
It is the OFAH's goal to stop the spread of this plant to other locations. Throughout this summer, OFAH and MNRF staff are on the water monitoring and mapping the water soldier colonies, thanks to a $35,000-grant from the Invasive Species Centre, and supported by a Water Soldier Management Plan. OFAH is putting out a call to volunteers to join them August 7th for Water Soldier Watch Day and help them track and monitor this highly invasive plant. More deets in the poster below...
If you had something that needed repair or were in need of a little TLC, the Repair Cafe PTBO was the place to be last evening (July 28th). Held at the Silver Bean Cafe, the place was abuzz throughout the evening. Hammering and the hum of sewing machines could be heard throughout as many skilled folks took on the challenge of those that brought something in search of a little mending or advice on how to tackle the challenge.
The Repair Cafe was started here in Peterborough after word had travelled from friends about similar cafes that had taken place in Toronto. From there, a small committee was formed and as word got out they were able to create a volunteer team of organizers and "fixers". The event last night was the fourth Repair Cafe PTBO, and with each event more and more people are hearing about them. Organizers hope to continue to host them at various locations throughout the city—they've been held at The Spill and Silver Bean so far—to make it accessible to everyone in the community. They are currently seeking out locations for the Fall.
A lengthy list as people check in their item along with the "fixer" for the job!

The weather has been the talk of the town this summer—there have been no real "dog days of summer". Sure we've had some heat—to which the Weather Network reminds us not to complain—but it's also been pretty darn cool, eh? Pools aren't being used as much, but sweaters and hoodies are. So is this the Summer Of No Summer? We get the goods in these quotes and facts from CHEX TV Weather Analyst Mike Judson...
ON THE COOL TEMPS... "Once again, we are caught in the pattern of a highly amplified jet stream, dragging down pockets of cold air into the east," Judson explains. "The jet stream is the main conductor of weather patterns and it has not been kind to us this summer. Upper level troughs in our atmosphere have been more persistent and numerous so far this summer, allowing potent cold fronts—like the one this past Sunday—to drive pockets of arctic air into the region."

ON TEMPERATURE RECORD HIGHS (OR LACK THEREOF) THIS SUMMER...
"Out of the 15 days spent over the seasonal average, we did not manage to break any temperature records," says Judson. "In fact, I can't find a date so far this year where a daytime temperature record high was broken."
ON WHETHER THE WEATHER WILL WARM UP IN AUGUST...
"There is much speculation regarding the coming months and the coming winter. Experts are waiting to see if we will see the development of El Nino in the Pacific, but things are still a little early for the long-range winter forecasts to come rolling out. Projections for August are looking pretty meh, at this point."
THE SILVER LINING...
"I happen to really enjoy the cooler temps and we are all saving on energy prices," says Judson. "Nights are so quiet without the perpetual hum of air conditioners. Also, the guys who are shirtless who probably shouldn't be shirtless, are wearing shirts!"
Hard to argue with any of that. So long as we don't have to fire up our furnaces.
