Peterborough Together: A Celebration of Peace and Unity At PCVS

Service organizations, faith communities, local foundations, First Nations representatives and people from across the Peterborough Region will come together at an event at PCVS on Sunday, March 6th to deliver a message of inclusion.

"Peterborough Together – A Celebration of Peace and Unity will build on the remarkable outpouring of support to the Muslim community that was shown after the attack on the Masjid Al-Salaam building," says Rev. Eilert Frerichs from Mark Street United Church.

“Our hope is to counteract some of the fears of the Muslim community and other recent newcomers to our country that continue to be expressed and fueled by anti-Muslim rhetoric both at home and abroad," says Rev. Frerichs.

The event starts at 2 pm in the auditorium of PCVS, and includes special musical performances and guest speakers. Everyone is welcome to attend this free-admission event that is organized by Mark Street United Church. All faith communities are invited.

The cast of Greeting Cards

The cast of Greeting Cards

Written and Directed by Peterborough's Frank Flynn, here's a synopsis of the play:

Robbie O’Grady is a bon vivant and a lady’s man. At least he was until a stroke changed all that. Now he’s struggling to find his footing in a whole new world. Frustrated, flat broke, and unable to work, he’s beginning to test the patience of his best friend/roommate Max, who’s got troubles of his own. Max hasn’t quite come to terms with the feelings he has for his girlfriend Mandy. Falling in love isn’t Max’s style and he wants out. Behind on the rent, Robbie needs help, and fast. Things get complicated when Mandy suggests Max’s little sister Gertie as a therapist for Robbie. Max doesn’t want Robbie anywhere near Gertie. Things don’t go as planned when Max solicits Robbie’s help to break up with Mandy, and Gertie isn’t quite the little girl Robbie remembers from when they were kids.

Love, laughter, and friendship abound in this romantic romp. Sure to touch hearts and funny bones alike.

Just BeYOUtiful Campaign Continues To Have Impact In Peterborough

The Just BeYOUtiful Campaign in Peterborough was created by Niki Allday and Christina Abbott in 2013 to promote inner beauty and self confidence in youth.

The empowering BeYOUtiful has a school program run on a volunteer basis and some topics include bullying, volunteerism, how to be a role model and how to love yourself.

Throughout the last three years, the BeYOUtiful program has been run in numerous local schools. BeYOUtiful also has monthly camp days and run a volunteer garden in downtown Peterborough (generously donated by Ashburnham Realty).

The next camp day is Saturday, March 19th from 10 a.m. to noon at Peterborough YMCA. The camp will have great team building activities—including teaching children about growing their very own fruits and veggies. They will be painting a pot and planting seed.

The cost for the camp day is just $10 per child, and you can email Niki Allday to register here. There are limited spots available so register now!

Learn more about Just BeYOUtiful on their Facebook page and website.

OPP Issue Warning About Ice Conditions

With milder temperatures forecast all weekend, Ontario Provincial Police are warning the public to use extreme caution near any bodies of water with ice on them.

Ice conditions are rapidly changing with the mild weather and rain, so stay off the ice. What appears to be frozen could in fact be ice that is not capable of supporting much weight.

OPP also remind parents to “speak to your children and remind them of the dangers that come with melting ice. Not only does the ice become unsafe, but banks along all bodies of water, whether big or small, can become weakened and can pose a threat to people of all ages and pets too.”

Please spread the word on your social media channels. Don't take unnecessary risks on foot or snowmobile.

Here Are Drawings Of The New Park That Will Replace Old Peterborough County Jail

The old decrepit jail at Peterborough County Courthouse on Water Street is partially being demolished, and the plan is to convert the site into a park.

A peek at the plans from Peterborough's Lett Architects reveals many walls will be left standing, giving the impression of beautiful garden walls.

The County is preserving what it can of the old building, and will "then honour the history of the location with interpretive panels throughout the park that tell the stories of the site."

The park project is slated to begin in early Spring, and it looks impressive and picturesque.

A Peterborough University Student/Aspiring Entrepreneur Stands Out With Epic Plaid Suit & Beard

A Trent University student and aspiring entrepreneur named Matthew Thompson is standing out at events not only because of his engaging personality but because of his epic plaid suit and beard.

We have noticed Thompson's eye popping suit at many networking events around town such as at Innovation Cluster "Fast Start" events and more—the dude is everywhere—and asked him why he chooses to wear the suit (and grizzly beard), and what competitive advantages he feels it gives him.

Matthew Thompson's suit definitely pops

Matthew Thompson's suit definitely pops

"Today's business world is saturated with new graduates with the same skills and same mindset," Thompson tells PTBOCanada. "These individuals believe that if they keep their heads down, work hard, and get good grades that they will be guaranteed a good job in the world. Unfortunately this is not true anymore."

Thompson, who is the President of the Trent Youth Entrepreneurship Society, tells PTBOCanada he first purchased the plaid suit in late November of last year, and that it has become an excellent initial talking point at events that leads to deeper more meaningful conversation around business, entrepreneurs and learning.

Thompson, and his suit, have become fixtures at events around town. So, too, has his beard.

"I have also created an icon that accompanies the suit—my beard, which I have been growing for almost 7 months now," he tells PTBOCanada. "It has become quite the conversation piece at networking events. I take quite good care of my beard through a daily routine—shampoo, conditioner, coconut oil and Walton Wood Farms beard balm are all vital parts of this daily routine."

Fundamentally, Thompson believes he is building his own brand in an important way as he learns to navigate the world of business and networking. He realizes that innovation, ingenuity, originality and brand building comes not just through good grades but flair and real-world networking as well.

"I believe as an entrepreneur you do not only sell a product or service, but you are promoting yourself," he says.

True that.

Timeless Message From 1928 For Peterborough About Buying Local & Believing In Your City

This historical message about Buying Local below is powerful stuff.

"Someone dropped it off to the Chamber," Stu Harrison, CEO of the Peterborough Chamber, tells PTBOCanada. "It's from the 1928 Peterborough Examiner. Apparently it ran several time during the months of March and April that year. A timeless message, 88 years old."

"I have seen things like this," Peterborough historian Elwood Jones tells PTBOCanada. "There were several Buy Local campaigns in the 1920s and 1930s. It may have been a joint venture with the Chamber of Commerce, downtown businesses and the city. We have a scrapbook at Trent Valley Archives, and I think it is in there too."

So yes, in 1928 supporting the Peterborough business community and the entrepreneurial/community spirit was vital—as it is today. Bring it Team Peterborough. It's in our DNA to collaborate and support each other.
