UPDATE: The Centennial Fountain Is On!

UPDATE: June 24th -> The fountain is repaired and on! We officially declare that summer has started!!

---------------------

ORIGINAL POST

The Centennial Fountain, installed in 1967 on Little Lake, is an important landmark in Peterborough. It's always a sure sign of Spring when it's turned on for the season.

It is scheduled to run from the middle of May to the middle of October annually, but the City of Peterborough says that when staff began preparing the fountain for service this year, it was discovered that the ground fault device that powers the fountain had been triggered and was inoperative.

Further investigation revealed that the 1,000 foot long cable that provides power to the fountain has been compromised and it is not safe to operate.

A meeting has been held with potential contractors to supply and install the necessary cable and specifications are being finalized. All efforts are being made to get the fountain back in working order as soon as possible, the City says.

Local Female Artists Combine Forces For Awesome "Bean Up" Series To Support Local YWCA

Local female artists are gathering every Friday throughout the month of June at the Silver Bean Café in support of YWCA Peterborough Haliburton for the "Bean Up" Series.

This great initiative was the brainchild of well known local artist Brianna Gosselin, who teamed up with the YWCA Peterborough Haliburton and the Silver Bean Café to hatch "Bean Ups" that feature her and other local artists.

Brianna Gosselin

Featured Bean Up artists in June include Lucky Jackson on Friday, June 3rd; Brianna Gosselin on Friday, June 10; Silvia Ferreri on Friday, June 17th; and Lisa Martini-Dunk on Friday, June 24th.

The featured artists will be at the Silver Bean on their scheduled Friday from 10 am to 11 am creating live art for the public to view, and a piece of their art will be on display—and available to win—for those who sign up as a YWCA Monthly Donor during the event.

The YWCA will be present and providing information to the public about the vital services they offer in the community for women and kids fleeing domestic violence.

Here Is Santa On A Jet Ski On The Otonabee River Because Why Not

Catherine Brown spotted Santa on a jet ski Saturday evening (May 28th) cruising the Otonabee River in Peterborough. This is not a common occurence.

"I was with my parents and grandparents," Catherine tells PTBOCanada of seeing Santa on a jet ski. "We were all surprised to see Santa and my mom's reaction was, 'You never know what you'll see on the river!' My grandma's reaction was, 'We should tell him we've been good!'"

It is off season for Santa so we guess this sorta makes sense—plus Peterborough and the Kawarthas is a great tourist destination. No word where Rudolph is (probably in the woods somewhere)...

Here is another picture below of Santa with a couple other jet skiers...

Kawarthas From The Sky Is Beautiful

Patrick J. Stephen, the awesome photographer/videographer who created this video about Peterborough, has produced a short trailer video called "Kawarthas From the Sky" that is beautiful.

Patrick tells PTBOCanada how the video came together showing the amazing Kawartha landscape views, farmland, rolling hills and sunsets:

"A little while ago, I approached the Millbrook Businesses Improvement to work on a promotional film. It is really going to be fun showcasing my hometown. I've been photographing these same landscapes for years and wanted to get a different perspective and add motion to really give the landscapes energy. I've been planning this shot in my mind for months to open with a car driving down into the valley as the sun rises. I got in touch with the talented drone pilot Steve Mayhew from Yo Steve Productions to help out. The conditions were perfect. Originally it was just going to be that one shot, but as we got flying around with the drone, we came away with some pretty cool views. We don't often see landscapes from this height and time of day. After seeing what we were getting, I just had to create something with it."

We hope to see extended version of the video at some point down the road.

Watch the trailer video below...

Had some time to do a quick edit of the footage shot early morning this week. More of this to come. check out the amazing Kawartha landscape views, farmland and rolling hills. Check out more work at www.stephendigital.com/Films Huge thanks to Yo Steve Productions

Here Is The Message From Tragically Hip About Gord Downie's Terminal Brain Cancer

Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip are such a Canadian institution—such a huge part of the fabric of this country and Canadian pop culture with quitessential songs such as "Bobcaygeon". They are music icons.

The band reported devastating news on their website that frontman Gord Downie has terminal brain cancer. Below is their message to fans...

"Hello friends.

We have some very tough news to share with you today, and we wish it wasn’t so.

A few months ago, in December, Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Since then, obviously, he’s endured a lot of difficult times, and he has been fighting hard. In privacy along with his family, and through all of this, we’ve been standing by him.

So after 30-some years together as The Tragically Hip, thousands of shows, and hundreds of tours…

We’ve decided to do another one.

This feels like the right thing to do now, for Gord, and for all of us.

What we in The Hip receive, each time we play together, is a connection; with each other; with music and it’s magic; and during the shows, a special connection with all of you, our incredible fans.

So, we’re going to dig deep, and try to make this our best tour yet.

We hope you can come out and join us this summer – details and dates will be coming this week.

And we sincerely thank all of you, for your continued love and support,

Paul, GordD, Johnny, Rob, GordS"

The Community Is Rallying Around Sarah McNeilly

Sarah McNeilly is an amazing performance artist who is a huge part of the local, inclusive Peterborough arts scene—including recent productions at The Theatre on King, Mysterious Entity, Showplace Players and more.

Shortly after her 31st birthday, Sarah was diagnosed with cancer. And now, the community Sarah has given so much to and so loves is giving back to her as a GoFundMe campaign has been launched for her as she begins her battle against it.

"Sarah is one of the most popular and loved artists in this town," fellow performing artist Ray Henderson tells PTBOCanada. "She has her hands in so many different projects and mediums. A singer, actor, Improv artist, just to name a few. Her fire and passion is tireless and relentless."

"The smile you see in all her pics is genuine because she is just so full of life," adds Henderson. "Her partner, Spencer Allen, is just as loved as he is such a valuable piece to the artistic puzzle of this community. You won't find another couple whose outlook, work ethic and creativity provides such a rich environment in our community. Sarah herself is such an incredible and beautiful soul."

Sarah is going to have to take a lot of time off work to fight this cancer, and her and Spencer need the community's help for all of the expensive treatments, prescriptions, travel and time off work that will be required.

Give what you can to the GoFundMe campaign here, and spread the word on your social media channels. (Already, more than $7,000 [**UPDATE: more than $14,000 has now been raised***] of the $10,000 campaign goal has been reached in a short period of time.)
