This Double Rainbow Image Over Peterborough Is Stunning

We shared this amazing, panoramic image to our PTBOCanada Instagram page of the double rainbow over Peterborough last night (September 1st), and it's getting hundreds of likes. The rainbow over the downtown (we see you Market Hall clock tower!) stretches out from the Quaker Tower to Little Lake, and this Instagram user had the perfect vantage of it from their apartment.

It's stunning...

Donate Blood To Carry On Dr. Andrew Chan’s Legacy

Dr. Andrew Chan was a well-respected member of the Peterborough community for nearly 20 years. Born in Hong Kong, Dr. Chan began his education and career in England. He soon relocated to Canada and began his education in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

After completing his education, Dr. Chan moved to Peterborough and joined the Medical Centre as a gastroenterologist in 1996.

Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Chan became known as a great leader. He stayed current in his field while investigating innovative medical technologies, was constantly pushing to improve patient care, but never lost sight of the importance of bedside manner. In honour of Dr. Chan’s contributions to his patients and this community, the Peterborough branch of Canadian Blood Services is holding a blood drive in his memory.

A Peterborough Couple Is Brilliantly Recreating Photos From Different Eras

For a Peterborough woman's birthday on Saturday (August 27th), a couple celebrated it by traveling back in time and collaborating on an awesome photo set in 1926. Michael Morritt and Gillian Turnham's "time machine photo" was photographed at a beach in Port Hope, Ontario near Peterborough.

"For the '20s photo, we wanted Gillian to be a flapper and for me to be a more straight laced suitor," Morritt tells PTBOCanada. "As with all our historical photos, we place the emphasis on getting the appearance of authenticity, rather than using authentic costumes. In some photos we've used paper towel to simulate fabrics, or used random bowls for hats. You can always find something in the photos that gives away the truth. However, you can hide a lot in black and white."

The costume and props in the photos came from Talise, Vinnie's and Catalina's in Peterborough.

Here is another photo from the '20s series...

This isn't the first time the couple—who aren't particular historical buffs—have created a historical photo that they have shared, and the plan is for many more in what Morritt calls a "nice hobby among many others".

"This is the second historical photograph we've been happy with, the first being set in 1896," Morritt tells PTBOCanada. "Our intent is to create 12 photos from 12 different eras."

The 1896 photo...

And in case you were wondering, here is what they actually look like in "real life" in a wedding picture of them taken earlier this summer...

We look forward to seeing more photos from historical eras this creative couple collaborates on.

A Huge Family Of Peterborough Sicilians Are In Sicily Right Now For Joe & Sam Ferreri

Joe Ferreri came to Canada in 1952 from the small town of Santa Ninfa, Sicily in Italy. His brother Sam arrived three years later in 1955. Both became iconic barbers in the Peterborough area—Joe becoming a household name in Lakefield, Sam in nearby Bridgenorth.

The brothers have both returned on separate occasions to visit their hometown once, but never together. Until now, that is. Both are in Santa Ninfa for a visit and have had a beautiful community welcome. It's turned into a huge Peterborough Sicilian reunion party, with 22 people travelling there from the area to join them.

The Peterborough contingent includes the likes of Michelle Ferreri and her husband Adriano (he now runs the barbershop in Bridgenorth that his Uncle Sam had, and Adriano's brother Phil runs the Lakefield one that their dad Joe had); Silvia Ferreri from Pensieri Shoes in downtown Peterborough; Anna Lisa Ferreri from the Pasta Shop on Sherbrooke St., and many more.

There is singing and dancing and a great feast is happening at a restaurant in Santa Ninfa called Castillo Di Rampinzeri as the family tells stories and reminisces...

Adriano digs into a delicious pizza

And, of course, there is ocean time with Grandpa Ferreri and the grandchildren...

Life is a beautiful journey and Joe and Sam Ferreri embody that.

Maryam Monsef Is Doing National Tour On Electoral Reform

This Sunday (August 28th) in Iqaluit, the Minister of Democratic Institutions, the Honourable Maryam Monsef, will kick off a national tour on electoral reform that will take her from coast to coast to coast. During this tour, Monsef will engage Canadians on electoral reform and how we can all work together to make Canadian democracy even stronger.

Monsef will travel to every province and territory across Canada, and is undertaking these gatherings to reach out and hear first-hand from Canadians from across the country about what they expect from the electoral process and the core values it should reflect.

Participants at events across Canada will have the opportunity to openly share the values, needs and aspirations they feel should be reflected in Canada’s electoral system.

“I am truly grateful for the tremendous opportunity to go and meet with Canadians from coast-to-coast and, most importantly, listen to their views on democracy," says Monsef. "I am especially looking forward to hearing from Canadians who have not voted in the past, because our electoral system should work for each and every one of us."
