Local Moms Join Forces As Mombassadors To Help The PRHC Foundation

Thirteen local women announced on Tuesday (April 10th) that they have come together to form the PRHC Foundation Mombassadors—a dynamic group of entrepreneurs and professionals who have put their drive, creativity and passion to raise funds for the PRHC Foundation.

Their goal is to help make their hospital even better as a way of saying thanks for the great care they received while giving birth to their children at PRHC. By contributing their energy and talents toward creative fundraising activities, the PRHC Foundation Mombassadors have come together to make a difference—for you, your family, your friends, and for all those who visit PRHC.

The Mombassadors

The PRHC Foundation Mombassadors have a number of initiatives planned, including their signature event: Girls Night Out on Thursday, May 10th—an age of majority, ladies only evening of dancing, live and DJ entertainment, delicious food, drinks, socializing, and more.

Proceeds will be allocated to a new Electronic Fetal Monitor for the Labour and Delivery Unit at PRHC that is vital to moms and babies during the birthing process, and ensures early detection of any sign of distress during labour.

BREAKING: There Have Been 3 Deaths To Suspected Illicit Drug Related Accidental Overdoses In Past 48 Hours

The Peterborough released put out a special media release Saturday (April 7th) notifying the public that over the past 48 hours, there have been three unrelated deaths from suspected illicit drug related accidental overdoses.

The Peterborough Police Service would like to remind the public of the risks of using drugs, particularly opioids. City and area residents need to be warned about the potential dangers when using illicit substances, especially when it is unknown what may be mixed with them or their potential strength.

It has been reported across Canada that Fentanyl has been mixed with many illicit drugs. Fentanyl is a synthetic, short-acting analgesic and sedative.

If an individual is going to use a drug, police say in the release, it is suggested that they consider doing so in the presence of another person for safety and that there is Naloxone present.

Naloxone is an opioid antidote that can reverse an overdose. Naloxone, once administered, can last for approximately 20 minutes to one hour depending on the strength of the opioid. This allows an individual that may have overdosed to be treated medically.

Naloxone is available free of charge from numerous pharmacies, The Health Unit at 185 King Street and from PARN at 159 King Street.

If you suspect someone has overdosed on drugs, it is of utmost importance that you call 911 immediately for medical assistance.

For more information relating to opiates and Naloxone, visit peterboroughdrugstrategy.com.

Clear Garbage Bag Program In Township of Douro Dummer Has Been Great Success

Since the implementation of the Clear Bag Program on January 2nd, the Township of Douro-Dummer has seen a 121 metric ton decrease in garbage sent to the landfill.

This represents a 40 percent reduction in tonnage over the same period last year. To put 121 metric tons in perspective, that would be approximately 25 full truckloads of garbage (based on 2017 numbers).

An increase in recycling and compostable materials dropped off at the Hall’s Glen Transfer Station has also been noted for the same time period.

The Township of Douro-Dummer is appreciative of  residents and businesses for their tremendous efforts in transitioning to using clear garbage bags and removing recyclable and compostable materials from their garbage.

Lost In Time: Old Water Fountain Hidden In Plain Sight Exposed At Lift Lock

During the rehabilitation work being done to the earth dams at the Lift Lock, crews found and exposed remnants from the original water fountain on the East side they knew was there from the 1900s (the Lift Lock itself opened in 1904) that has not been used in a long, long time.

Here is what it looks like now after trees were removed from around it...

It's literally been hiding in plain sight for many decades under all the tree growth and vegetation...

Here is what the functioning fountain looked like way back in the day (date unknown) with kids using it...

Parks Canada tells PTBOCanada they do not know much about the fountain, other that it was a known entity.

Through the course of rehabilitating that big earth berm, it would be great to see the old fountain brought back to life. Only time will tells what happens from this Peterborough remnant of the past.

[Note that the water is not safe for drinking, as it is ground and canal water.]

Peterborough Petes 2017-18 Attendance Second Highest In Franchise History

The Peterborough Petes have announced this season’s average attendance of 3,190 per game is the second highest in recorded franchise history, just 81 fans per game behind the Petes’ 2005-06 OHL championship season.

The growth in 2017-18 equates to 20 percent more than the 2016-17 regular season average attendance of 2,666 per game. Indeed, the Petes saw the largest year-over-year growth of all 20 OHL franchises.

“We’ve seen an increased number of new and renewed season tickets and sponsorships purchased for 2018-19,” says Burton Lee, Executive Director of Business Operations. “As a not-for-profit organization, growing this support allows us to improve both on the ice and off.”

Matt D’Agostini, Sr. Coordinator of Group Ticket Sales & Service, and Steve Nicholls, Coordinator of Season Ticket Sales & Service, have promoted substantial growth in their areas of fan engagement, and will work to continue helping fans enjoy Petes hockey in 2018-19 and beyond.

The organization has also seen a big spike in in families and youth who are falling in love not just with Petes hockey but the entire entertainment experience of being at a Petes game.

Rehabilitation Work Being Done To Earth Embankment Dams At Lift Lock & Trent-Severn Waterway

Many of you might have noticed the removal of trees and vegetation at the Earth dam at the Lift Lock.

Well the Lift Lock is one of several Earth embankment dams across the Trent-Severn Waterway that have been identified for rehabilitation or upgrades that may include repairs to washouts, removal of vegetation undermining their strength, and height increases.

According to Parks Canada, this work is being done to rehabilitate and strengthen earth dams—which are vital for flood mitigation and therefore the safety of visitors, residents and property.

Indeed, the long and the short is trees were never meant to be on a hill holding back water and some breaches were discovered in the earth dam a few years ago.

During phase one of the project, trees and shrubs growing along earth dams—which threaten the dam’s long-term integrity by creating places for seepage and erosion—are removed.

The plan is to remove stumps and to re-plant beneficial plants like milkweed and tall grasses at the dam sites.

Earth Dam rehabilitation is occuring across the Trent-Severn Waterway, as can be seen in this graph below...

Peterborough Changes City Slogan To 44°18′N, -78°19′W At Last Minute In Middle Of Night

[UPDATE: Happy April Fools' Day all! The new slogan will not be 44°18′N, -78°19′W. We love "Live Outside the Ordinary!" Rock that.]

-----------

ORIGINAL POST

The new, new slogan that will brand Peterborough for years to come has been unveiled, and was emblazoned on the sign welcoming you to our fair city over night.

Yes, "44°18′N, -78°19′W" now greets you as you exit off Highway 115, a punchy slogan that passed unanimously at City Council at the last hour during a secret, emergency meeting called late last night as city councillors changed their mind again about the tagline and branding for the city.

"We really loved this new submission that came into our email box at the last minute," said council in a media release that went out a 3:05 a.m. “We feel this new slogan will put Peterborough on the map! Plus, the numbers look really cool and chic. Numbers are all the rage right now. You know, 'I came off the 115 via the 401 and hit the 44°18′N, -78°19′W' could be a great little ditty.”

Nitpickers who nitpicked about the previous excellent chosen name "Live Outside the Ordinary" are already criticizing the name on social media, as technically the latitude and longitude coordinates would actually place you somewhere in the Otonabee River near Little Lake… not where the sign is located.

"Don't take the coordinates too literally," one council member told us over early morning coffee. "They are supposed to simply guide you to the heart of Peterborough."

If all goes well, we will soon see "44°18′N, -78°19′W" emblazoned on local T-shirts and people using the hashtag #44187819 on social media.
