$215,000 Federal Investment Supports Work Of Kawartha Land Trust To Protect Cation Wildlife Preserve

On Saturday (June 22nd), Maryam Monsef, Minister of International Development, Minister for Women and Gender Equality, and Member of Parliament for Peterborough—Kawartha, announced on behalf of Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, that the Government of Canada invested $215,000 in support to the work of the Kawartha Land Trust for the protection of the Cation Wildlife Preserve.

“We are on track to meet our climate change targets because we have a 50-point plan and it’s working,” says Monsef. “It includes pollution pricing, phasing out coal and plastics, investing in clean technology and protecting our land and waters. The protection of the Cation Wildlife Preserve is part of our government’s plan to double the amount of nature protected in our lands and oceans.”

Kawartha Land Trust acquired land donated by David and Sharon Cation and conserved land, adding 270 hectares to Canada's protected areas network.

The Cation Wildlife Preserve is in a natural conservation corridor that sits right in the middle of several important protected areas including Balsam Lake, Indian Point, and Queen Elizabeth Wildlands Provincial Parks, the Altberg Wildlife Sanctuary Nature Reserve and the Carl Sedore Wildlife Management Area.

The 668.5-acre Cation Wildlife Preserve includes marked trails for passive recreational use by the public, such as hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

“We are grateful for the federal government's contribution to support the protection of the Cation Wildlife Preserve and also Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Ecological Gift program that provides tax incentives to land owners to protect private lands in perpetuity,” says Tara King, Kawartha Land Trust Development Manager. “This landscape is vibrant and so full of life.”

Canadian Canoe Museum’s Capital Campaign Receives $500,000 Gift From Toronto-Based Philanthropists George & Kathy Dembroski

The Canadian Canoe Museum has announced that George and Kathy Dembroski have made a $500,000 commitment to the museum’s $65 million capital campaign, supporting the construction of its new 85,000 square-foot facility at the water’s edge on the Trent-Severn Waterway.

The Dembroskis are friends of the museum, and have a connection to the area through their cottage on nearby Stony Lake in the Kawarthas. These Toronto-based philanthropists are strongly supportive of the plans for the new museum and are eager to see it built alongside the Peterborough Lift Lock.

The museum’s 9,700 square foot outdoor terrace, which runs alongside the east side of the building, will be named in recognition of their generous gift.

“We are incredibly pleased to support this exciting project in Peterborough, recognizing its local, provincial and national impact,” says Kathy Dembroski. “As we learned about the plans for the new museum, we became increasingly interested. We knew we wanted to become involved as soon as we learned about the functionality of the terrace—and how it will serve as a connecting space between the indoors and the outdoors. We can envision people gathering there and taking in the views of the Lift Lock and the waterway.”

The terrace, which is parallel to the galleria space on the interior, matching the curved shape of the building, extends to the ground floor from the interior. Only a glass wall separates the two areas. This will draw outside visitors into the museum, and also invite visitors who are inside, to explore the spaces beyond.

100 Women Peterborough Just Raised $10,000 In Under An Hour For Five Counties Children’s Centre

On Tuesday (June 18th), the 100 Women Peterborough group raised more than $10,000 in under one hour for Five Counties Children’s Centre.

Adam White, Chair of the Five Counties Board, and their 15-year-old client, Rebecca Jordan, presented on behalf of the organization to the women at their meeting held at the Innovation Cluster. Five Counties Children’s Centre was selected to receive the donations by a majority vote that evening. (Also presenting to the group were Peterborough Butterfly Run and the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra.)

“A huge thank you to 100 Women Peterborough for their thoughtfulness and generous gift, your donation will make a difference in the lives of the children that will be able to receive service sooner,” says Adam White. “Because they can get this service sooner, it’s going to make a huge difference in their development, lives and in the way they can chase their dreams.”

Five Counties Children’s Centre provides therapy services at no cost to families that assist children who are delayed in their development to develop the skills they need in everyday life such a walking, talking, and activities of daily living. A non-profit organization, Five Counties Children’s Centre is primarily funded by The Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services and the City of Peterborough.

“Thank you on behalf of the other children,” says 15-year-old Rebecca Jordan, who moved to Peterborough to access the life changing services of Five Counties Children’s Centre. “I have benefitted from Five Counties Children’s Centre so the opportunity for more children to have the opportunity is something that I’m excited about because I know how it has impacted my life and how it will change someone else's.”

The contribution from 100 Women Peterborough will fund the Centre to work with 12 children who would have otherwise not been able to receive support this year. One hundred percent of the funds raised by 100 Women Peterborough are donated to four non-profit organizations determined by the membership throughout the year.

The Arkells Will Rock Peterborough Memorial Centre November 15th

The acclaimed rock-band Arkells have announced a new run of arena dates this Fall in support of their JUNO Award-winning album, Rally Cry, and that includes a stop in Peterborough at the Memorial Centre on November 15th.

Arkells frontman Max Kerman can’t wait to get their arena show back to new cities in Canada: “We’ve developed a real bond with these communities over the years, so it was important to us to come back,” he says. “Sometimes when we get out of the biggest cities, we find the rowdiest crowds. Those shows, and that energy, can be the most memorable. Rally Cry Tour = best tour.”

Choo Choo News: Zoo's Miniature Train Ride Slated To Open June 22nd

The zoo’s miniature train ride—whose opening was delayed this year due to a construction project to rehabilitate the Pump House at the dam where the train runs being delayed—is now slated to finally open for the season.

The zoo says they are hoping to open on Saturday, June 22nd, which would be great as the weather is actually looking somewhat promising for this weekend.

So fingers crossed that the train—one of the zoo’s more popular attractions—will start up… and the weather will hold up!

B!KE: The Peterborough Community Cycling Hub Facing Financial Hardship, Hosting Fundraiser July 13th

B!KE: The Peterborough Community Cycling Hub (293 George Street North) needs your help to stay a float, which is why they are hosting their first ever B!KE-a-thon on July 13th to raise the funds they need to keep their doors open and their programs running.

B!KE—an incorporated not-for-profit cycling education and support organization that’s been working with the Peterborough community since 2006 teaching bike maintenance, repair and riding skills—is facing financial hardship due to recently passed provincial legislation that caused it to lose significant core funding.

They need your support to ensure B!KE continues to run effectively for the community. By FUNdraising for B!KE, your team will help the cycling hub continue to deliver high quality, low-barrier cycling education programs, and a community bike workshop and hub.

REGISTER YOUR TEAM

For one full day, enthusiastic B!KE supporters will gather together to “spin the pedals “ for B!KE. Signing up as a team, cyclists will a ride stationary bike (one per team) for 12 hours straight to raise funds for B!KE. Team names, costumes and themed teams are strongly encouraged. Stationary bikes can be provided, but you may bring your own.

If you love to ride and believe in what B!KE does, they need you to gather your friends, family and work colleagues, and lead a team! Each team will be comprised of five members, and collectively it’s their job to keep a bicycle in motion for the entire event. Each team must commit to raising $500 (or more) in support of B!KE.

The fundraiser takes place Saturday, July 13th, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Set-up time starts at 7:30 am.) Join B!KE on the back patio of The Social, 295 George Street North. (If it rains, they’ll move inside.) A lunch, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided free of charge.
