Multiple locations in The City of Peterborough will be open on Tuesday to allow residents to charge devices and mobility aids.

The following locations will be available for charging devices (regular services at the locations will not be available):

  • Peterborough Public Library, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Healthy Planet Arena, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Peterborough Museum and Archives, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Anyone charging devices at the facilities needs to bring their own charging cables. Public washrooms are also available at each of the locations.

While power has started to be restored in some parts of the City, many areas are still without power.

Many traffic signals at intersections remain without power, creating four-way stops that can cause traffic congestion and delays for emergency services when responding to calls.

Emergency services are urging residents to avoid non-essential travel at this time.

Emergency services remind residents to only use 9-1-1 for emergencies – please do not call 9-1-1 for updates on the outage or to report a downed power line.

It is an opportunity of a lifetime for 17-year-old Rhiannon King as her family set up a GoFundMe to send her to Disneyland in Anaheim, Ca. to dance with the Lightning Elite Disney Performance Team.

King received the opportunity after she placed first at the Star Beat Dance Champions in Niagara Falls in the senior solo division on the May 12-15 weekend. The win also earned her a $1,000 scholarship toward the trip to California.

"I was so shocked," said King. "I was crying, I started jumping up and down and my teammates were really happy for me too.”

The GoFundMe is requesting $7,000 which pays for the flight, insurance, dance equipment and food. It was set up on May 15 shortly after King had received the opportunity.

The seven-day trip allows King the chance to meet with top industry professionals and work with dancers around the world according to the King family.

"It's her foot in the door," said Jason King, Rhiannon's father. "For many dancers, they don't those opportunities and the fact that this opportunity has come virtually at the end of her novice career per se, it's a dream come true for everyone."

Rhiannon has been dancing since she was three and danced competitively roughly when she was six. She has danced in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, musical theatre, tap and more throughout her life.

She has aspirations to attend York University for dance. Rhiannon wants to make dance her career by performing in her mid-20s and eventually opening a dance studio.

"I'm really proud of her for what she's accomplished and I know she'll succeed with whatever she decides to do,” said Melissa King, Rhiannon’s mother. “She has a natural talent for dancing I noticed that (in) the first year."

Ukrainian Man Welcomed In True Peterborough Spirit

Serghei Gubanov, a Ukrainian refugee that came to Peterborough on May 11, was given a true Peterborough welcome last week

With the help of Pete Dalliday, various businesses in Peterborough came together to help Gubanov adjust to a new life.

Gubanov, who is staying with a resident in Peterborough, was given a bike by Martin and Cheryl from Auto Connect.

Gubanov says while he had his license in Ukraine he enjoyed biking whenever he could. He recently got his driver license in Canada and plans to buy a car when he can.

Gubanov joined Glenn Millar from Darling Insurance for lunch at Chemong Lodge, before heading to Toronto for Blue Jays game.

With lunch, a bike, a place to stay and some new friends Gubanov says he is overwhelmed and grateful.

He is eagerly waiting for his sister and niece to be able to join him in Peterborough, and hopes to find a place of his own. With a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and Forensic Science he is more than willing to work and busy applying to any job he can.

Jann Arden Will Hit The Stage This Long Weekend At The Memorial Centre

Jann Arden, who is no stranger to Peterborough, says she’s ready to hit the Memorial Centre Stage in a city made for performing.

“I think Peterborough has grown a lot,” said Arden. “You’ve got options for venues, you’re in good shapes I think you’ve got lots of good shows coming your way.”

Arden has performed in Peterborough a few times. She recalls once in the 90’s, crossing the street downtown and being struck by a car.

She, surprisingly, remembers the moment fondly.

“A brand new 16 year old driver with his dad, he was mortified,” she said. ”That was the first and only time I’ve ever been hit by a car and I’ll never forget it, people were so kind. I had a show that night and it made for a great story.”

Now, years after she is back in town, after two years of not performing.

While Arden notes how horrible the pandemic has been for many people, she counts herself lucky to have been able to enjoy the break from her usual busy life.

“For thirty years I’ve travelled for 250 days a year, so to be able to stay home and work from home - I was very happy to just be at home and reevaluate things,” she said. “I was able to think about how I wanted to work and how I wanted to go forward.”

Arden will perform at the Memorial Centre on Sunday. Tickets are still available on the Memorial Centre website.

Riverview Park & Zoo Launches Return to Full Schedule; Creates Fundraising Campaign For New Train Next Year

Riverview Park & Zoo is celebrating their grand opening on Saturday with a return of all amenities and services while launching a fundraising campaign to replace the miniature locomotive projected for next year on Friday.

Amenities include the Kiwanis snack bar and miniature train rides that are in full operation from Victoria Day Weekend until Labour Day weekend. The zoo is open from 8:30 a.m. to dusk daily.

The grand re-opening family-friendly event includes the following:

  • 10:00 a.m. Zoo Yoga - with Salty Yoga

  • 10:00 a.m. Snack Shack opens

  • 10:00 a.m. Gift Shop Market opens

  • 11:00 a.m. Storytime in the Park

  • 1:00 p.m. Bird-Friendly Trail Walks

  • 3:00 p.m. Concert in the Park: Steve Waters and Cartwright Boundary

  • Draw for a zoo Swag Basket and an exclusive family/group tour

The 1974 miniature locomotive is running for its last year. The train will be replaced through a fundraiser known as the ‘Riverview Railway Capital Campaign.’ The zoo has already raised roughly 50 per cent of its total funding for the train from donors and prior fundraising efforts.

“In 1979, the company that made the train went out of business," said Jim Maloney, zoo manager and curator. "Finding replacement parts for it at this point is getting very difficult or very expensive. We don't want to be in a situation where we have a major breakdown and we don't have a train to offer to our visitors."

@ptbo_canada The Riverview Park & Zoo’s train is in its last year as they will try and get a new one for 2023! #ptbo #ptbocanada #zoo #train #minaturetrain #riverview #choochoo ♬ C'mon N' Ride It (The Train) - Quad City DJ's

The zoo is offering dedication plates set in each seat compartment of the new train ride as a fundraising effort. The seat dedications are $2,500 each that include a personalized plaque of either your name or can be dedicated in honour of someone else.

All purchases from the snack bar allow an option to round up the a customer’s bill to the nearest dollar as the proceeds go towards the new train.

To be a sponsor or dedicate a seat bench on the train, please contact Cathy Mitchell, Program Supervisor 705-748-9301 x 2304 or cmitchell@riverviewparkandzoo.ca.

Donations to the ‘All Aboard the Riverview Railway Train Campaign’ can be made online.
