Several businesses and communities have come out in support of the Peterborough Petes as the team is in London to take on the Knights in Game Five of the OHL Championship.

The Downtown Business Improvement Area, Canadian Tire, City Hall, Angevaare Mazda, Anden Kitchen & Bath Centre, Whelan’s Flooring Centre, FreshCo., Aon Inc’s Royal Gardens among several others have dressed in Petes apparel to show their team spirit.

A Petes watch party is taking place at the Quaker Foods City Square rain or shine from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and is being nationally televised.

The Charlotte Street square will have a 16-foot mega screen that is live streaming the game. Face painting and a small vendors market with grab-and-go snacks such as popcorn, candy, mini pies and tacos) are amenities that are provided during the watch party.

The Beers Kept Flowing At the 100 Acre Brewing Company Grand Opening

Peterborough’s newest brewery 100 Acre Brewing Company has opened its doors and kicked off its grand opening on Friday morning.

Bentley Vass is the brewery’s CEO and has his sister Nichea and brother Colby Vass as partners in a family-fun business. Their father has lived on the property since he was a child. He has an ‘open-door policy’ for anyone to come at any time and share the experiences he had when growing up on the 100-acre spot.

“All those fun memories of playing around outside just kind of come back, it's great to see people bring their kids out, running around in the field and stuff like that,” explained Bentley. “It's reminiscent of the childhood that I had and that's what we wanted to share with everybody.”

It is located at 390 Ashburnham Dr. at a 100-acre homestead with the grand opening running for four days, ending on Monday. The location is considered an ideal spot for the business according to Bentley as it is a quick turn off Highway 115 for cottage-goers to take a break and enjoy a drink. It also gives a rural setting but remains close to Peterborough residents so that they don’t have to go far for a countryside setting.

“People are recognizing more now than ever how important getting outside and enjoying some fresh air is,” explained Bentley. “To be able to have this oasis — for lack of a better term —, where people can actually escape, spend time outside, enjoy the beautiful scenery enjoy the beautiful weather for mental health, it's just a no-brainer.”

100 Acres feature four beers brewed in-house that are available with each beverage named with a nature theme: Flight Path (table beer), White Tail (pilsner), Monarch (Saison) and Snapper (India Pale Ale). Their beer is described as being crafted using traditional styles while also being creative and experimental as nature intended according to their website.

Take-home cans are available for purchase or patrons can enjoy a draft beer on-site. The brewery is in its infant stages but will have pop-up kitchens from several local restaurants that serve food at their establishment.

Outdoor equipment retailer Bobcat of Peterborough held its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday afternoon.

The business provides parts, servicing, rental and equipment purchasing for outdoor equipment. Ryan Dibello, Bobcat president was joined by his staff, customers and business neighbours in celebrating the occasion. Bobcat of Peterborough is located at 2161 Whittington Dr., Unit C.

Peterborough Child & Family Centres Celebrates 40th Anniversary With Grand Opening Of New PlayScape

The grand opening of a new PlayScape helps mark the Peterborough Child & Family Centres’ 40th Anniversary with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at their Antrim Street facility on Wednesday afternoon.

Parents and children were invited to use the new PlayScape and tour the facilities during the grand opening.

“It was a passion project for so many people who work here so I think it's pure excitement right now,” said Nicola Lyle, Centre C.E.O.

The PlayScape features a repurposed downhill slide, a circular track for walking and biking, a play kitchen, a canopy and other playground equipment. It replaced a tall climber that had occupied the outdoor space for several years.

“As our population has changed, the children that come here are younger than they used to be 20 years ago,” explained Lyle. “We really identified that the outdoor space no longer worked for us in the way that we wanted it to. We had dreamt for some time for having a much more small child-friendly naturalized space that really made the most of this beautiful outdoors and the nature that we are in.”

The services provided are free as the organization is funded by several levels of government. They offer parent-child interaction programs, parenting education, breastfeeding and a well-baby clinic.

The facility services children from when they are born until the age of six but welcomes kids who are in their kindergarten years that want to use the space.

After a soft opening last weekend, 100 Acre Brewing Company is holding its grand opening for the May two-four weekend beginning this Friday.

The announcements were made by the company’s social media handles (Facebook and Instagram) Tuesday evening.

It is located at 390 Ashburnham Dr. at a 100-acre homestead with the grand opening running for four days, ending on Monday.

The following are the grand opening hours::

  • Friday: 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

  • Saturday: 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

  • Sunday: 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.

  • Monday: 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

East City Loaded Pierogi To Hold Grand Opening This Saturday

Franchise fast food restaurant Loaded Pierogi is opening another location in Peterborough with a grand opening at 89 Hunter St. this Saturday.

The location is at the former Reggie’s Hot Grill which closed on Dec. 18, 2021.

“We’re proud to have put so much of our heart into planning this grand opening and are committed to upholding the flavour, quality, value and exceptional service that each and every store in this franchise delivers,” said Paridah Thakkar, Loaded Pierogi owner.

Loaded Pierogi’s menu consists of classic and crispy pierogies, greens & grains bowls, French tacos, curly fry poutines, mac ‘n cheese and loaded ice cream scoops.

Clothing Store 'The Neighbourhood Vintage' Opens Its Doors in Downtown Peterborough

Wearing classic gear is becoming hip in Downtown Peterborough as Vintage retail clothing store The Neighbourhood Vintage opened for the first time on Friday afternoon.

“This is a shop space, where we can all be in the store together with our items, and a place for people to come try things on and see things and touch things instead of just buying them online, which is how most of us were initially selling,” said Jacquelyn Craft, owner. “Earlier in the spring, I decided to pursue it and actually look into making it official, starting a real business. That’s where the idea for The Neighbourhood Vintage came about.”

Along with other vintage vendors in the Peterborough area, Craft had been discussing opening a physical space to sell their clothing for years.

The Neighbourhood Vintage carries items from eight vendors including Craft’s own brand, Minty Vintage.

Downtown Peterborough Gets New Real Estate Office in Grand Opening

Forest Hill Real Estate Inc. Brokerage has found a new home in downtown Peterborough as they had the grand opening of its new office on Thursday.

The brokerage is fronted by Keith Monahan, Forest Hill sales representative and his wife Traci Tempany, broker. The property was purchased back in May and underwent renovations leading to its opening.

“Tracy is so detailed-oriented. I got to be honest, it drove me nuts because she would be fussy to what I would consider it the simpler of details," explained Monahan. "But then when I see those details come to fruition, I go, 'wow.’”

The brokerage serves Toronto, Oakville, the Muskokas and Peterborough area. Monahan was born and raised in Peterborough and is eager to service his hometown.

“A client is not a client, it's an opportunity to be a friend down the road,” he explained. “When we work with people, it's for life. As corny as that sounds, that's truly how it works. To be able to work with people that we've known and grew up with, it means so much more than just running up and down Bay Street in Toronto.”

Monahan has been a broker since 2006 working with Tempany since then.

Local Dog Trainer Holds Grand Opening Of First Brick-And-Mortar Store

It has been nine years in the making for dog trainer Ineke Turner as she opened her first brick-and-mortar business, Turner & Pooch Dog Training, in a grand opening on Tuesday afternoon.

The business provides dog training classes either in groups of up to four or private lessons alongside a trainer.

This is the first business that Turner has opened since her nine years as a dog trainer.

"I am scared out of my mind but I’m really excited to be here and help people with their dogs,” she said.

Turner was training dogs at Del Crary and Millenium Park for the past nine years. The rapport and relationships she developed working at the parks gave her the confidence to open her first store according to Turner.

“I've always wanted to have an indoor space just to be able to provide more service to people,” she explained.

While most businesses have suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic, it provided the opposite effect for Turner. She noticed that several households were taking in more dogs as pets to aid in mental health during the height of the pandemic.

“With a lot of covid puppies, I was able to have that opportunity a lot quicker,” said Turner.

Turner & Pooch Dog Training is located at 142 Simcoe St. in downtown Peterborough.

Grand Opening of Downtown Restaurant At Former Hot Belly Mama's Location

Downtown Peterborough has a new upscale gastropub as The EL[P] held its grand opening on Wednesday.

Owned by husband and wife Amanda and Greg Da Silva, the restaurant occupies the former Hot Belly Mama’s location at 378 George St. N.

The couple rented the property from Ashburnham Realty in late August then began renovations the following October last year.

The food is described as accessible yet elevated pub food according to the owners. Their slogan, “Food is Our Common Ground” is engraved on their front sign and placed on their back wall. The motto fosters a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere for anyone who wants to kick back and relax after a long day.

"It's a positive space. Leave your cr*p at the door,” said Amanda. “In here in this space, let's enjoy some good conversation, good food, good drinks and have a good time."

The couple’s passion for art, music and entertainment — as both owners previously worked in the hospitality and entertainment industry — was incorporated into the restaurant’s atmosphere. The restaurant is covered in colourful art, graffiti and murals from local artists.

Originally from Toronto, the two moved to Port Hope in 2016. The small town acts as an in-between spot for all the family and friends they have in Peterborough, Toronto, Cobourg and Port Hope.

They currently operate a sister restaurant called “The EL” in Cobourg that opened in 2016. They wanted to replicate the same success they had in Cobourg for their Peterborough gastropub.

"We didn't want to pass up an opportunity to become part of the downtown core and that community with that feeling and vibe," said Amanda. "We've really thrived in Cobourg and I think Peterborough is similar to that. Everybody supports everybody, there's no bad blood between different restaurants and that competition so that's what we wanted to do here."

Despite opening during a pandemic, the couple is optimistic about the restaurant’s success being located in Peterborough.

“In the past couple of months, we've hit the road running,” said Greg. “There's a shutdown and all that but I think we're opening at the perfect timing."

"We're risk-takers and we didn't want to look back in a few years and say, 'we wish we would have done that,'" said Amanda. "As being so resilient through Covid at that location (The EL) and pivoting the way we had to succeed, I think that also gave us the confidence to be able to do this now that we're coming out the other side."

The Da Silva’s have rented the adjacent property of the former Olde Stone Brewing Company. The space is closed off and is unknown what it will be used for.
