Peterborough Concert Band Holding Special Performance to Benefit PATH On Oct. 15

The Peterborough Concert Band is holding a special musical program, ‘The PATH Forward’ to benefit Peterborough Action for Tiny Homes (PATH) for Oct. 15 at Market Hall.

The performance is conducted by Juno-nominated Music Director Saman Shahi as Kate Suhr and Megan Murphy will guide the audience through a program that features big band standards, classical gems, new compositions and vocals.   

The proceeds benefit PATH to help provide transitional housing for unsheltered citizens in Peterborough. 

The performance runs from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Market Hall, located at 140 Charlotte St. A reception will follow the performance. Tickets are $44 (including HST and fees) and are available through Market Hall online.

Photos: Big Wreck Returns to Peterborough Musicfest To Rock Del Crary Park

After five years since their last performance at Peterborough Musicfest, Big Wreck returned to town to rock a full Del Crary Park on Wednesday night.

Big Wreck frontman and guitarist Ian Thornley joked with the audience after their opening song about rocking and seating preference.

“These people want to rock and the rest want to just… Chill. And if I had the choice, I would pick… The chair. But I respect your choice,” joked Thornley.

The band played fan favourites such as That Song, Ghosts and Bombs Away. They even played Come Again from other band ‘Thornley’ after the Big Wreck split up in 2003. The band returned after receiving chants of an encore from the elated crowd and finished off their set with The Oaf (My Luck Is Wasted).

An autographed acoustic guitar by Ian Thornley was put up for raffle during the concert and was given to a lucky winner at the end of the night.

HunTer Fondo

We are excited to invite you to join us for an unforgettable ride in memory of John Hunter, a beloved local cycling enthusiast who passed away in 2021. John was a local legend, known and loved far beyond our community for his dedication to cycling and the Peterborough Cycling Club (PCC). To honour his memory, we’re organizing The HunTer Fondo, an event that aims to bring together 250 local and regional riders for a great cause.

Funds raised from this event will support Peterborough Regional Hospital Centre, Campbellford Memorial Hospital, and Peterborough Cycling Club. We’ve designed three routes for cyclists of all levels: the 40K Trial Heaven Ride, 65K Frappe le Rue and the thrilling 125K “It’s going to be a fun ride.” All rides will start and finish at Ashburnham Memorial Park, followed by a BBQ and social at the Heritage Pavilion at the museum.

The Hunter Fondo’s 2023 support of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation & Campbellford Memorial Hospital (CMH) will help shape the future of cardiac care in our region – expanding cardiac services at PRHC to empower world-class treatment, close to home.

Peterborough Folk Festival

Join us at Nicholls Oval Park for this annual celebration of music, culture and community. Admission to our inclusive and accessible festival is free, with donations encouraged and appreciated. With four stages of live music and lots of other activities, the festival has something for everyone. The Artisan Village features local artisan and craft vendors and community organizations. Visit the Food Village to sample foods from a variety of local vendors and the Cameron’s Pavilion to wet your whistle while listening to live music on the Pavilion Stage or on the Main Stage.

The festival gets underway both days at 11:00 am with the Children’s Village, Artisan Village, Food Vendors and Cameron’s Pavilion. Live music begins on the Generation Solar Stage and Cameron’s Pavilion Stage at 12 noon.

Alice Teichert’s paintings are known for their holographic depth and unique luminosity, for their visual poetry and multi-faceted proximity to music. In this survey exhibition spanning four decades of practice, Teichert uses line, shape, and colour to push the edges of legibility to open new realms of dialogue.

Multidisciplinary artist Alice Teichert studied music, philosophy, visual poetry, visual arts, and printmaking in Belgium and France. She works from her studio in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. Since 1989, she has built an international career with over 30 solo exhibitions in France, Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Australia. Known for her bold colours and layered transparencies interspersed with script-like line drawings, Teichert’s paintings are noted for their holographic depth. Her works are held in many corporate, private, and public collections including the MacLaren Art Centre, Global Affairs Canada, the Musée de la Ville de Valence (F) and the Museumsquartier of Lübeck (D).

Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Tim & The Glory Boys

Peterborough Musicfest closes out its 36th summer season welcoming explosive Canadian country/bluegrass band Tim & The Glory Boys to Del Crary Park.

Self-described as “a Canadian gang of backwoods hillbillies with world-class facial hair and infectious on-stage energy,” the two-time Juno Award-winning band, and 2021 CCMA Group of the Year and Rising Star nominees, have toured for a decade, sharing the stage with top country, roots and gospel music acts.

Formed in 2013, the band sees front man Tim Neufeld superbly backed by his Glory Boys brethren, among them Colin Trask (dobro/percussion) and Brenton Thorvaldslon (banjo/guitar).

The band’s debut full-length self-titled album released just past in April features five songs that have already achieved Top 40 country radio status and generated some 30 million streams. When You Know You Know has been certified gold with three other tracks – Me Without You, Without A Prayer and Float – appearing on Top 10 playlists. The band’s latest single release is Take Me Backroad, featuring High Valley.

To Honour and Respect: Gifts from the Michi Saagiig Women to the Prince of Wales, 1860

In April 2023, quilled birch bark makaks made by women of Rice Lake Village (now Hiawatha First Nation) will arrive at the Peterborough Museum & Archives (PMA) for an extended loan visit from the

Royal Collection Trust in England, where they have been cared for since they were given to the young Prince of Wales in 1860. The makaks will be exhibited and will be the focus of activities: workshops on

quillwork, Michi Saagiig Anishnaabemowin, special tours of the exhibit, and some visits in which participants will be able to gently touch them.

Dr Lori Beavis (Hiawatha) and Dr Laura Peers curate the To Honour and Respect project, with a Planning Circle including Gimaakwe Laurie Carr (Hiawatha), Kim Muskratt (Hiawatha), Veronica King-Jamieson

(Mississaugas of the Credit) and others. The project is funded by the Museum Assistance Program (Department of Canadian Heritage), Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and Hiawatha First Nation, with in-kind contributions by the City of Peterborough and the Peterborough Museum & Archives, whose staff will care for the makaks during their visit. The Royal Collection Trust is lending the makaks.

Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Fandango - ZZ Top Tribute

ZZ Top tribute act Fandango headlines at Del Crary Park.

Formed in the mid 1990s by brothers Geoff and Chris Dahl, joined by drummer Perry Weido, Fandango was originally part of Legends Live, a rock and pop music theatre production that toured North America. That was followed by residencies in Las Vegas and Myrtle Beach.

Now, trademark beards and sunglasses in place, Fandango is back on the circuit, bringing the timeless blues-rock music of “that little band from Texas” to venues, casinos and festivals throughout North America.

Formed in 1969 in Houston, ZZ Top – Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill – released 15 albums and piled up an estimated 50 million record sales, earning the trio induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Notable hits include Tube Snake Boogie, Gimme All Your Lovin’, Sharp Dressed Man and Legs.

Peterborough Musicfest Postpones Glass Tiger/Monowhales Concert to Aug. 17 Due to Band Member Illness

Headlined Glass Tiger with opening act Monowhales for Wednesday’s Peterborough Musicfest has been postponed to Aug. 17 due to an illness from Glass Tiger’s lead singer Alan Frew, announced on Tuesday morning.

As a result of the illness, there is no Musicfest concert this Wednesday.

Peterborough Musicfest released the following statement regarding the postponed concert:

“We wish Alan a speedy recovery and look forward to having Glass Tiger on stage with us next Thursday. Monowhales will open for Glass Tiger on the new concert date of Thursday, August 17th. Showtime is 8 p.m., at Del Crary Park.”

Monowhales to Open For Glass Tiger For Peterborough Musicfest On Aug. 17

Alt-rock sensation Monowhales is opening for Canadian rock band Glass Tiger on Aug. 17 at the Peterborough Musicfest concert at Del Crary Park. 

Monowhales formed in 2017 with multiple top-10 singles and a 2022 Juno Award recipient for Breakthrough Group of the Year.

The band is fresh off a national tour in support of Mother Mother. They are enjoying continued success with its latest single CTRL^^^ from its February 2002 album Tunnel Vision according to a press release.

Back in 2019, their breakout single RWLYD (Really Wanna Let You Down) made history, charting at number two on the Mediabase Canada Alternative Rock Chart – the only independent, self-managed band to attain that ranking. 

During the pandemic, the Monowhales released top 10 singles All Or Nothing and Out With The Old prior to the March 2021 release of its debut album Daytona Beach.

Peterborough Concert Band To Give Free Performance On Big Band Day For Sept. 16

The Peterborough Concert Band is taking the stage for Big Band Day set for Sept. 16 from noon - 12:45 p.m. at Millennium Park.

This concert celebrates the music of the Big Band era according to a press release.

It is conducted by Saman Shahi who will play as part of a multi-band event. The Concert Band plans to open the event with a program that showcases the band's broad repertoire, including but not limited to the ‘big band’ genre.

This event is subject to change due to being an outdoor event however there is no rain date issued.

The 36th summer season of Peterborough Musicfest continues Aug. 5 with The British Legends at Del Crary Park.

Each song is performed note for note as recorded, bringing to the stage iconic performers who ruled the pop charts for more than five decades.

We invite you to listen to the sounds of our local musicians while visiting our 100+ vendor outdoor market May 1 to October 31, rain or shine in the Morrow Building parking lot. From November 1 to April 30, we are located inside the Morrow Building just south of the parking lot.

The establishment of a central market area for individual trade or sales has been a feature of societies all over the world for centuries. This trade has taken place in Peterborough for the past 190 years. This efficient method of commerce (ie. producer, direct to consumer) has gained much interest in recent years as small businesses have grown. We at the Peterborough Farmers’ Market are proud to be part of this popular phenomenon.

As producers of local food and crafts, we stress freshness, quality and value as we deal each and every week with our market patrons. Come and enjoy this traditional shopping experience.

4th Line Theatre Presents: The Tilco Strike

Millbrook’s 4th Line Theatre presents ‘The Tilco Strike’

It recounts the year-long fight between 35 poorly paid women, and their male bosses at Tilco Plastics in Peterborough, Ontario, who were determined to crush the women and their union. The strike began in December 1965 over a $25 bonus and escalated into an epic battle between organized labour and strike-breaking employers. The women lost their fight, but changed labour relations in Ontario forever

Peterborough Musicfest Presents Canadian Rapper Classified

Next to hit the Peterborough Musicfest stage is Canadian rapper Classified.

Classified hit the music scene in 1995. The Nova Scotia-born rapper has 18 studio albums. He has worked with some of the world’s most prominent hip hop artists, including Snoop Dogg, Raekwon and Maestro Fresh Wes. His music has amassed more than 200 million streams globally.

The artist has received 24 major award nominations, with eight wins between the Juno Awards, East Coast Music Awards and MuchMusic Video Awards.

His 2013 self-titled album debuted at number one on the Canadian Nielsen Soundscan Chart with the single ‘Inner Ninja’ earning a Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year.
