Lang Pioneer Village Takes the Holiday Shopping Into the Past With Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 18

Lang Pioneer Village is providing holiday gift ideas with its Christmas Bazaar on Nov.18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building at Lang Pioneer Village Museum on 146 Lang Road.

This indoor/outdoor market will feature a variety of local vendors selling unique hand-crafted gift items.

Hot dogs and refreshments are available for purchase. Several raffle items including two fully decorated trees and over $1000 worth of prizes are at the event. Photos with Father Christmas run from 10 a.m to 12 noon.

For vendors wishing to participate in this year’s Christmas Bazaar, a few outdoor vendor spaces are still available and can contact roconnell@ptbocounty.ca for details.

Market Hall Is Back To Provide Uplift Spirits With "Cancer Takedown" For Cancer Care

Market Hall is back for the second Annual Cancer Takedown as a 'spirit-raiser' for anyone touched by cancer for Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.

The night shines a light on the mental burden of cancer and unites people through song, story and solidarity. All proceeds go to Cancer Care at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre.

Performances will be done by Melissa Payne, Kate Suhr, Linda Kash, Megan Murphy, Anthony Bastianon, Rob Phillips and Pol Coussée. It also includes people sharing their cancer stories.

Husband and wife team Rick and Amy Kemp founded the event. Rick has been a patient of PRHC since 2019 when he was diagnosed with metastatic kidney cancer. In May 2021, his battle doubled as he was diagnosed with a second primary cancer, CNS lymphoma.

“The mental battle of cancer is as tough as the physical battle. Some days, even tougher,” said Rick. “Let's find more ways to help more people get through the mental part.”

Lang Pioneer Village Gets Spooky With All Hallows' Eve On Oct. 27 and 28

Lang Pioneer Village is getting in on the spooky fun, teaching the origins and traditions of Halloween on All Hallows’ Eve set for Oct. 27 and 28 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This year’s event is a hybrid of both the Museum’s Historic All Hallows’ Eve and Spooky Halloween events that feature both historic and contemporary Halloween elements.

Tractor and wagon rides, party games, storytelling, maze walk, fortune telling, face painting, a monster bash and more are some of the activities being hosted at the historic village.

Hot chocolate, treats and hot dogs (for a fee) are available at the weekend. All children will receive a treat bag at the end of each evening.

‘Halloween in the BOOro’ Spooktacular Returns to Downtown Peterborough

Downtown Peterborough is going to get spooky this month as the Peterborough Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA) hosts their second annual ‘Halloween in the BOOro’ event many family-friendly activities.

Shop windows will have eerie displays beginning Friday.

This year’s window contest will challenge shop owners to embrace the haunting ambience of a dark forest.

Locals are invited to join in the festive spirit leading up to Halloween by voting online for their favourite dark forest-themed window display from 25 different businesses.

Voters can tour the downtown using the online Halloween window map. The DBIA will be providing cash prizes for the top three Halloween windows as a reward for the most creative shop owners.

  • First place: $300

  • Runner up: $200

  • Third place: $100

The main Halloween in the BOOro event is on Oct. 28 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a variety of free family-friendly activities including trick or treating, late-night shopping and interactive Halloween scavenger hunt.

Shoppers are encouraged to dress up as their favourite character and go from door to door for a trick-or-treating extravaganza with over 40 locations scattered throughout the downtown core. To help families navigate their downtown Halloween adventures, a trick-or-treating map can be found online.

“You could tell everyone was having such a fun night out, both parents and kids,” said Holly Butler, Iceman Video Games manager. “It reminded me of when you see a trick-or-treating scene in a movie and there are kids just everywhere in costume.”

Trick-or-treaters will encounter a cast of characters ‘haunting’ the crosswalks. In keeping with the dark forest theme, families can expect to find witches, fairies and other woodland characters along George Street and a cast of water-based characters from mermaids to pirates haunting the intersections along Water Street according to a press release.

“Halloween in the BOOro is another example of the DBIA utilizing the magic of experiential entertainment to draw families back into our downtown core,” said Hillary Flood, DBIA Vibrancy manager. “My team has put so much effort into this. The level of interactive programming and Halloween curation is going to be top tier.”

Trick-or-treaters are also invited to join in a Halloween quest where locals can try their luck at completing a self-guided Halloween hunt anytime between 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 28. The Halloween hunt will feature 13 ghostly stops along the way and a small prize at the end for those who complete the scavenger experience (while supplies last). Participants can join the scavenger hunt with or without a mobile device.

For folks wanting a more interactive digital experience, the scavenger hunt can be played on your mobile device by downloading Goose Chase a mobile scavenger hunt app. Once in the app, search “BOOro Halloween Hunt” or search game code GJR376 to join in on the hunt. Scavengers can get a head start on the hunt by going to the Boro mural located at Sherbrooke and George Street to unlock the first clue.

Kawartha Downs Hosting 'The Battle of Quebec VS. Ontario' Truck and Tractor Pull On Labour Day Weekend

‘The Battle of Quebec VS. Ontario’ truck and tractor pull is hitting Kawartha Downs this Labour Day weekend in a two-day event for Saturday and Sunday.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with pulls beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Pullers can register at 4 p.m. on the day of the competition or can call Rod Cochrane at 905-243-1124.

The tractor pull marks the end of the summer events season for Kawartha Downs, but plans are already in the works for this fall and winter according to said Summer Nickerson-Hagen, Kawartha Downs marketing director.

“Management is already planning for some smaller events in the fall and winter,” she said. “And of course, planning the 2024 season that we are already so excited for. Stay tuned for some big announcements this fall/winter.”

Harness racing is still scheduled for Friday and Saturday night races resume on Sept. 9 through Sept. 23.

Admission to the pulls is $20 for general admission, $10 for children (ages two-11), and a newly-added weekend pass for all ages is $35. Tickets are available online via kawarthadowns.com/events or at the gate. Guests can still expect free parking onsite, bleacher seating, beer tents, and food trucks.

Millbrook’s 4th Line Theatre presents ‘The Cavan Blazers,’ written by Robert Winslow and directed by Kim Blackwell. 

It is a gritty, intense play that has the audience on the edge of its seat from start to finish. This drama chronicles the religious conflict between Catholic and Protestant Irish settlers in Cavan Township in the early to mid-nineteenth century. Violence erupts when a Protestant vigilante gang known as the Cavan Blazers tries to stop a Catholic settlement from being established.

Lang Pioneer Village Corn Roast

Join the harvest season at the Corn Roast at Lang Pioneer Village Museum.

The family-friendly day has historic demonstrations, live music, and plenty of fire-cooked corn. Tour with a free horse-drawn wagon ride and tour the historic village.

The village will teach visitors how corn was used back then with examples such as corn bread, popcorn, dried corn, corn soups, and corn relish in the Fitzpatrick House, and sample some Johnny cake with maple syrup in the Milburn House.

The village will have demonstrations including threshing, bagging, fanning mill and corn grinding.

Traditional music is being performed by Lotus and Luke from the Weaver Shop porch.

A corn-on-the-cob eating contest taking place on the Village Green. Corn crafts and corn hole by the Ayotte Cabin are some activities that will be run.

Tragic Tales – Little Lake Cemetery

On this tour, you will hear about the tragedy of the Turnbull Building collapse and discover details about the 1916 Quaker Fire that you may not know. Additional stories center on the untimely demise of little Freddie McMaster, the amazing life and career of strongman Daniel McDonald, and the burial of Col. Alexander McDonell, a Catholic, who was supposed to be interred outside St. Peters Cemetery but now has a prominent place near the Little Lake Cemetery Chapel.

Art Gallery Of Peterborough Presents: Reciprocity: Alice Teichert

Alice Teichert’s paintings are known for their holographic depth and unique luminosity, for their visual poetry and multi-faceted proximity to music. In this survey exhibition spanning four decades of practice, Teichert uses line, shape, and colour to push the edges of legibility to open new realms of dialogue.

Multidisciplinary artist Alice Teichert studied music, philosophy, visual poetry, visual arts, and printmaking in Belgium and France. She works from her studio in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. Since 1989, she has built an international career with over 30 solo exhibitions in France, Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Australia. Known for her bold colours and layered transparencies interspersed with script-like line drawings, Teichert’s paintings are noted for their holographic depth. Her works are held in many corporate, private, and public collections including the MacLaren Art Centre, Global Affairs Canada, the Musée de la Ville de Valence (F) and the Museumsquartier of Lübeck (D).

Fifth Annual Lock & Paddle

Parks Canada’s fifth-annual Lock & Paddle event is welcoming back paddlers and spectators at the Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site of Canada this Saturday at 3 p.m.

This year’s theme ‘Lift Your Spirits,’ invites paddlers and attendees to show us what makes them happy! Paddlers get to experience going down the Lift Locks and paddling through the canal. This free all-ages event invites anyone to decorate their vessel, wear a costume or have fun.

Fifth-Annual Lock & Paddle Hits Peterborough Lift Lock This Saturday

Parks Canada’s fifth-annual Lock & Paddle event is welcoming back paddlers and spectators at the Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site of Canada this Saturday at 3 p.m.

This year’s theme ‘Lift Your Spirits,’ invites paddlers and attendees to show us what makes them happy! Paddlers get to experience going down the Lift Locks and paddling through the canal. This free all-ages event invites anyone to decorate their vessel, wear a costume or have fun.

To participate, registrants can go apply online.

4th Line Theatre Presents: The Cavan Blazers

Millbrook’s 4th Line Theatre presents ‘The Cavan Blazers,’ written by Robert Winslow and directed by Kim Blackwell. 

It is a gritty, intense play that has the audience on the edge of its seat from start to finish. This drama chronicles the religious conflict between Catholic and Protestant Irish settlers in Cavan Township in the early to mid-nineteenth century. Violence erupts when a Protestant vigilante gang known as the Cavan Blazers tries to stop a Catholic settlement from being established.

Live Harness Racing at Kawartha Downs

See horses and drivers in the sulkies race around a five-eighths mile track at Kawartha Downs. Bet on your favourite horses and enjoy the dining experience while you see the horses circle the track.

HunTer Fondo

We are excited to invite you to join us for an unforgettable ride in memory of John Hunter, a beloved local cycling enthusiast who passed away in 2021. John was a local legend, known and loved far beyond our community for his dedication to cycling and the Peterborough Cycling Club (PCC). To honour his memory, we’re organizing The HunTer Fondo, an event that aims to bring together 250 local and regional riders for a great cause.

Funds raised from this event will support Peterborough Regional Hospital Centre, Campbellford Memorial Hospital, and Peterborough Cycling Club. We’ve designed three routes for cyclists of all levels: the 40K Trial Heaven Ride, 65K Frappe le Rue and the thrilling 125K “It’s going to be a fun ride.” All rides will start and finish at Ashburnham Memorial Park, followed by a BBQ and social at the Heritage Pavilion at the museum.

The Hunter Fondo’s 2023 support of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation & Campbellford Memorial Hospital (CMH) will help shape the future of cardiac care in our region – expanding cardiac services at PRHC to empower world-class treatment, close to home.

Let’s come together to celebrate John’s legacy and support these important causes. We can’t wait to see you there!

Peterborough Folk Festival

Join us at Nicholls Oval Park for this annual celebration of music, culture and community. Admission to our inclusive and accessible festival is free, with donations encouraged and appreciated. You can donate at the festival to the friendly volunteers in yellow T-shirts, or anytime (with instant tax receipts for donations of $25 and up) via our CanadaHelps page here. Thank you!

With four stages of live music and lots of other activities, the festival has something for everyone. The Artisan Village features local artisan and craft vendors and community organizations. The Children’s Village has activities and children’s performers. Visit the Food Village to sample foods from a variety of local vendors and the Cameron’s Pavilion to wet your whistle while listening to live music on the Pavilion Stage or on the Main Stage.

The festival gets underway both days at 11:00 am with the Children’s Village, Artisan Village, Food Vendors and Cameron’s Pavilion. Live music begins on the Generation Solar Stage and Cameron’s Pavilion Stage at 12 noon.

The festival is accessible on foot and bike from the Rotary Trail, with valet bike parking available thanks to our friends at B!KE Community Bike Shop. See our Frequently Asked Questions page for details.

Bobcaygeon Craft Beer and Food Festival

Over 10 beer and cideries on site, six amazing food vendors, local vendors, artists and makers are also on site.

Limestone Cowboys will be headlining in the Murphy Barn, with Kelly Burrows and Shannon Roszell performing in the Gazebo.

Art Gallery Of Peterborough Presents: Reciprocity: Alice Teichert

Alice Teichert’s paintings are known for their holographic depth and unique luminosity, for their visual poetry and multi-faceted proximity to music. In this survey exhibition spanning four decades of practice, Teichert uses line, shape, and colour to push the edges of legibility to open new realms of dialogue.

Multidisciplinary artist Alice Teichert studied music, philosophy, visual poetry, visual arts, and printmaking in Belgium and France. She works from her studio in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. Since 1989, she has built an international career with over 30 solo exhibitions in France, Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Australia. Known for her bold colours and layered transparencies interspersed with script-like line drawings, Teichert’s paintings are noted for their holographic depth. Her works are held in many corporate, private, and public collections including the MacLaren Art Centre, Global Affairs Canada, the Musée de la Ville de Valence (F) and the Museumsquartier of Lübeck (D).

Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Tim & The Glory Boys

Peterborough Musicfest closes out its 36th summer season welcoming explosive Canadian country/bluegrass band Tim & The Glory Boys to Del Crary Park.

Self-described as “a Canadian gang of backwoods hillbillies with world-class facial hair and infectious on-stage energy,” the two-time Juno Award-winning band, and 2021 CCMA Group of the Year and Rising Star nominees, have toured for a decade, sharing the stage with top country, roots and gospel music acts.

Formed in 2013, the band sees front man Tim Neufeld superbly backed by his Glory Boys brethren, among them Colin Trask (dobro/percussion) and Brenton Thorvaldslon (banjo/guitar).

The band’s debut full-length self-titled album released just past in April features five songs that have already achieved Top 40 country radio status and generated some 30 million streams. When You Know You Know has been certified gold with three other tracks – Me Without You, Without A Prayer and Float – appearing on Top 10 playlists. The band’s latest single release is Take Me Backroad, featuring High Valley.
