Final Peterborough Area Roller Derby Home Double-Header Hits Douro This Saturday

It’s the last chance to catch both Peterborough Area Roller Derby PARD teams in action on their home track as they take the track at the Douro Community Centre this Saturday.

PARD’s Charter team takes on visiting Salt City Roller Derby at 4 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., PARD’s Regulation will meet up with Ottawa Roller Derby’s Bytown Blackhearts. Doors open at 3:30 p.m and between games there will be opportunities for audience members to win prizes in the Chuck-A-Duck and the Pool Pony races.

Tickets to this all ages, family friendly event are $15 at the door, or $10 in advance by contacting the league or going online. Kids 12 and under are free. Merch tables and a meal from Mammoth Barbeque will be set up in the arena parking area. The event is licensed and cash only is accepted at the bar.

Our next intake of skaters — including absolute beginners to roller skating — will take place in late September with their Learn to Skate/Roller Derby 101 program.

Gauvreau Accounting Tax Law Advisory has launched their third annual Gear Up for Good campaign, an initiative dedicated to providing essential resources to under-served children in our community.

This year they’re doubling their target to 200 backpacks filled with school supplies. In addition to backpacks and supplies, they are providing complimentary haircuts to boost students' confidence as they start the school year. The donations will benefit both Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Children's Aid Society. Gauvreau is looking for additional support, including providing haircuts, backpacks, and supplies. Donations need to be dropped off at 150 King St. by Aug. 16.

There is free yoga in downtown Peterborough this summer.

The Downtown Business Improvement Area has partnered with Summer Soul Yoga and Wellness Studio to hold free outdoor yoga outside the Venture North building at 270 George Street North on Saturday mornings. These free sessions will be Aug. 10, 17 and 24. It’s a great way to kickstart your Saturday morning with some wellness.

Each class will be followed by a small downtown vendors market with some downtown businesses setting up booths for some post class shopping and refreshments.

Don’t miss Goatchella, this summer’s premier goat festival.

This annual event will be held on Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Haute Goat at 1166 5th line in Newtonville. Goatchella is a celebration of local farms, local makers, and local goats. Gauvreau GPA Hosting Third Annual 'Gear Up for Good' Campaign Give 200 Local Kids a Head Start For School Supplies

200 local kids are getting a head start for back to school supplies as is Gauvreau Accounting Tax Law Advisory is hosting its third annual ‘Gear Up for Good’ campaign.

The initiative provides backpacks and supplies to under-served children in Peterborough from Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Children's Aid Society for the upcoming school year.

This year, the company is increasing its goal from 101 to 200 backpacks from prior years. In addition to the supplies, Gauvreau CPA is providing complimentary haircuts as a way to boost students' confidence as they start the school year according to a press release.

Ricart Branded Apparel and Promo have donated water bottles while Domino's has offered a free pizza to each participating family as part of the campaign.

“Every child deserves the chance to excel in their education,” said Robert Gauvreau of Gauvreau CPA. “We are grateful for the incredible support from our community and partners, and we are determined to make this year's 'Gear Up for Good' campaign the most impactful yet.”

Gauvreau CPA is calling on the public’s assistance to help with the initiative, seeing additional support that includes providing haircuts, backpacks and supplies. Potential assistance can help by visiting Gauvreau’s Amazon Wishlist or drop off donations at their facility located at 150 King St., Suite 100 W by Aug. 16. Backpacks will be distributed on Aug. 23rd.

Peterborough Expected to Get Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms In Special Weather Statement

Peterborough, Lakefield and Southern Peterborough County are expected to get heavy rain in slow-moving thunderstorms on Friday according to Environment Canada.

Torrential downpours are expected with rainfall amounts of 30 to 60 mm but could even be higher. The rainfall is expected to continue into this evening.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads according to Environment Canada. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Former Peterborough Pete Eric Staal Signs One-Day Contract With Carolina Hurricanes With His #12 Jersey to Be Retired

Former Peterborough Pete Eric Staal has signed a one-day contract with the Carolina Hurricanes to retire with the team. His #12 jersey will also be retired at a future date during the 2024-25 NHL season.

Staal is the only player in franchise history to represent the Hurricanes/Whalers at four consecutive NHL All-Star Games (2007-09, 2011), earning All-Star MVP honors in 2008. Photo courtesy of the OHL.

Staal was selected in the first round, 13th overall by the Peterborough Petes in the 2000 OHL Priority Selection from the Thunder Bay Kings AAA program. The Thunder Bay native had 81 goals, 128 assists and 209 points in 185 regular season games in three seasons. He added 30 points in 20 playoff contests with Peterborough.

He was drafted second overall by the Hurricanes in the 2003 NHL Draft, winning a cup with the team in 2006 and lead the team in playoff points.

Staal has had 455 goals and 608 assists for 1,063 points in 1,365 career games over 18 NHL seasons. He has played for the Hurricanes, New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Montréal Canadiens and Flordia Panthers during his NHL career.

Balanced Attack Gives Peterborough Lakers 9-4 Win to Take Game Two Over Brooklin L.C.

Eight different goal scorers for the Peterborough Lakers gets the job done in game two of the Major Series Lacrosse semifinals as they take a 2-0 series lead over Brooklin L.C. in a 9-4 win at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Thursday.

Both teams traded goals in the first period as Turner Evans and Holden Cattoni scored for the Lakers while Kyle Waters and Curtis Knight had goals for Brooklin. The score was 2-2 after one.

The Lakers scored three goals while clamping down defensively against the visitors. Austin Hasen and Adam Thistlethwaite scored while Evans got his second of the game for a 5-2 lead.

Peterborough never had to look back heading into the third. Joe Resetarits opened the scoring 2:08 into the frame. Austin Shanks got a power-play goal just under five minutes later in response. Peterborough had a three-goal run to put the game out of reach for Brooklin. Matt Gilray, Koleton Marquis and Owen Hiltz had the goals for the Lakers.

Shakes scored a last-minute goal for Brooklin but it was too little, too late and Peterborough got the 9-4 win and game two of the series to lead 2-0 in the best-of-seven series.

Buchan held Brooklin scoreless for almost 30 minutes, stopping 48 of 52 shots.

Game three is at Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby this Saturday at 8 p.m. Game four is back in Peterborough on Thursday at 8 p.m.

Howlin' For the Peterborough Animal Care Centre Fundraiser Returns Sept. 14

Animal lovers can help the Peterborough Humane Society as they are bringing back the ‘Howlin’ for the Peterborough Animal Care Centre (PACC)’ fundraiser for Sept. 14.

The event will feature a Yappy Hour, cash bar, photo booth, silent auction, dinner, live auction, musical performance (act yet to be determined) and more.

“Join us for a fun evening of celebrations, good food and great company. We hope to see you all there to support us, as we raise the bar in animal wellness,” according to a press release statement.

North York Woman Charged With Arson In West End Business Fire From March

A 29-year-old North York woman is facing an arson charge after a fire in a west-end Peterborough business on March 2.

Peterborough Police determined the fire was set deliberately at roughly 5 a.m. in the Lansdowne Street and Brealey Drive area.

Upon arrival, they learned that the front window had been smashed and a fire set. No one was injured were reported.  A suspect was seen leaving the area in a dark sedan.

After a four-month investigation by Peterborough Police, officers with the Investigative Services Division executed a search warrant at a North York residence on Thursday and made an arrest.

The woman was arrested and charged with:

• Arson, Disregard for Human Life

The accused is being held in custody and appeared in court on Thursday.

Preseason Game Ticket Details Released For Petes/Wolves Game In Norwood

The Peterborough Petes and Norwood Minor Hockey have officially announced ticket details for the preseason game between the Petes and the Sudbury Wolves.

The game is on Sept. 8 at the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre with puck drop scheduled for 3:05 p.m.

Tickets for the game are $20 and are available in person at the Asphodel Norwood Community Centre and JJ Stewart Motors or by contacting Jen Stewart at (705) 760-4234.

There are no online ticket sales for this event as all sales are cash only. All tickets are general admission with seats available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 2 p.m. with no re-entry permitted.

The game will also feature a number of off-ice activities including raffles, chuck-a-puck, appearances by Petes mascot, Roger and the NDMS Hornet. A skate with the Petes for ticket holders is being held after the game. All funds raised are in support of Norwood Minor Hockey.

This is one of three Petes preseason games being played at local arenas.
