The Petes originally drafted the London native in the 11th round, 205th overall, of the 2024 OHL Draft. He was selected out of the Lambton Jr. Sting program, where he put up 11 points in 30 games for their U16 team in 2023-24. This season, Sturgeon played in 26 games for the Peterborough Petes U18s, scoring three goals and adding 13 assists for 16 points. He also picked up an assist in 10 playoff games for the U18 Petes.

“Luis is a big, strong defenceman who had a solid season with the U18 Petes,” said Michael Oke, Petes general manager and vice president of operations. “We were able to track his development a lot this season as he was able to work out and practice with the OHL team regularly. This is another good example of how our relationship with the U18 Petes provides players with a development model and pathway to the OHL.”

Luis joins a long list of U18 Petes who received the opportunity to play in the OHL for Peterborough. This list includes Michael Simpson, Quinton Pagé, Brody Partridge, Easton Rye, Masen Johnston, Thanasi Marentette, Sam McCue, Dylan Woulds, Josh Kavanagh and Cole Patey. Sturgeon will wear number 20 for the Petes.

Puck Drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Petes will be wearing their Real Canadian Superstore contest-winning jersey design.

Peterborough Humane Society Launches Animal Wellness Services

The Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) is offering basic animal wellness services at the Peterborough Regional Spay/Neuter Clinic, announced on Monday.

The service is to help increase accessibility for veterinary care for Peterborough according Shawn Morey, PHS CEO.

“Over 90 per cent of individuals surrendering their pets to Peterborough Humane Society cite the main reason as being due to the financial impact of veterinary care, and costs associated with caring for a pet,” he said. “The introduction of basic wellness services at PHS supports one of the main organizational focuses of enhancing and providing access to affordable care for the community.

PHS hosted its first Wellness Clinic on Friday. Services offered include but are not limited to: wellness exams, deworming, flea/tick prevention, microchipping and several vaccination offerings.

“We are just getting started,” explained Morey. “Our goal is to keep people and pets together, and the introduction of wellness services from our clinic will play a vital role in helping achieve that goal.”

Animal wellness clinics will happen weekly as PHS plans to expand to additional wellness clinic days as soon as this Spring.

Patio Permit Applications Open For the 2025 Season

Applications are now open for the City of Peterborough’s annual patio program for the 2025 season.

In February 2025, City Council approved maintaining the current insurance requirements for Downtown Patio Program participants at $2 million Commercial General Liability, except for patios licenced to serve alcohol, which would be required to have $5 million Commercial General Liability. File Photo.

The patio program creates the opportunity for more patio and pedestrian space in the City’s Central Area.

The program includes:

  • Allowing businesses on George, Water and Charlotte streets to use on-street parking spaces for additional outdoor business/patio space.

  • Maintaining the existing two-vehicle travel lanes and cycling lanes on George and Water Streets.

  • Reducing Hunter Street West to a one-lane, one-way street to expand pedestrian space and available patio areas.

  • Maintaining Charlotte Street as a two-way, two-lane street while allowing for patios in on-street parking spaces through the patio permit process.

  • The use of decorative fencing and planters to delineate between the new pedestrian areas, expanded/on-street patios and vehicular traffic lanes.

  • The program has been expanded to allow businesses in East City along Hunter Street East to operate a patio on a portion of the city sidewalks.

  • A non-refundable $400 Application fee.

Patio licences are required for all individuals, partnerships or corporations that want to place a patio on City-owned property.

To apply for a patio licence, visit the City’s Application, Licences and Permits webpage online. Applicants can submit an application, permit fee and supporting documents through the City’s website.

There will be reduced speed limits on streets with patios. Parking spaces, loading zones and designated waste pick-up areas may be adjusted once patio locations have been confirmed with participating businesses.

Patio licence holders must put in place feasible measures to reduce physical barriers, respecting the accessibility needs of individuals. Business owners and patrons may contact the City with suggested modifications to the patio layouts that would improve accessibility. Where feasible, the City will work with licence holders to make requested improvements.

To have a patio licence ready for the Victoria Day long weekend, completed applications should be submitted by April 1. The last day to apply for a patio licence for the 2024 Patio Season is May 30.

Members of the Peterborough Canadian Irish Club, residents and dignitaries were present to kick off Irish Heritage Week, as declared by Mayor Jeff Leal for Peterborough.

This year marks several milestones for Peterborough and Irish Heritage. 2025 marks the 200th year that politician Peter Robinson administered the passage and settlement of Irish Catholic families into Scott’s Plains, now known as Peterborough.

“Irish people have are responsible for the names of all these communites in this area, (aside from) First Nations; they are here to be respected as well,” said Brendan Moher of the Peterborough Canadian Irish Club. “A lot of these communities bear the names of Irish people and it is fitting that we honour that legacy and all the people that have come out of this area. ”

Sunday is the 25th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, starting at City Hall and running through George Street until the Peterborough Memorial Centre. This year's parade grand marshall is actor M. John Kennedy playing the role of Peter Robinson.

“There are an awful lot of people in this area that lay claim to Irish heritage,” explained Moher. “Of course, on St. Patrick's Day, everybody lays claims to Irish heritage so we'll be expecting a big increase in the next week.”

This year is also the 175th anniversary of Peterborough's founding, including the Peterborough Police Force. Moher says Robinson would be proud to see what Peterborough has become after all these years.

“People from Ireland continue to come here because of those connections and settle still to this day because of the roots that were laid down,” he said. “It causes growth in the community, comically there will be growth this summer as well because of Irish people coming from Ireland to take part in these bicentennial celebrations.
