Nutrition Programs in Myrtle’s Kitchen
Peterborough – The Gardens of Peterborough will showcase the cooking talents of seven culinary teams from AON seniors’ residences in the “Ready Set Cook Competition” taking place on Tuesday, February 7th from 5:30p.m.-8p.m. in the Atrium at Canterbury Gardens to support public health nutrition programs.
Teams of culinary staff from each of the seven AON locations will vie for the winning trophy by preparing a dessert course for judges and guests. Community members are invited to take part in this quest for the best overall dessert by purchasing tickets for only $25, enabling them to sample all seven options. All proceeds will support public health programs in Myrtle’s Community Kitchen, that is located at the Peterborough Health’s (PPH) location at Jackson Square on 185 King Street.
Myrtle’s Kitchen is named in memory of Myrtle Smith, the matriarch of AON’s Smith family. Programs delivered in Myrtle’s Kitchen improve the quality of life of our community by establishing a regional, shared meeting place where people can come together to access healthy food and learn valuable life skills. These public health programs help create food security for vulnerable residents together with community partners, as well as teach nutrition and safe food handling.
This is the 2nd year for the event which last year featured unique appetizer dishes and raised monies for this worthwhile cause in the process. Last year’s winning appetizer was a Homemade Rosemary Infused Ricotta Baked in a Phyllo Pastry Triangle with Tri Colour Beet Salad and Double Smoked Maple Bacon Batons.
“Sharing good food is virtually synonymous with building community, so we are thrilled to be able to offer a unique event that brings together culinary excellence in support of public health programming,” said Vicki Coppins, Director of Dining Services of AON Inc. “This event will also give guests a chance to meet the chefs who create the menus for the enjoyment of residents at each of The Gardens of Peterborough locations.”
Professional judges from Fleming College and Catering Plus will decide the winner. This event is being organized to honour national “Food Service Professionals Awareness Week” promoted by the Canadian and Ontario Societies of Nutrition Management.
