PTBOCanada Featured Post: Meet The Team Behind Peterborough's JBL First Aid

In all of life’s scenarios, there might not be one more necessary to be prepared for than when a medical emergency occurs. To be unprepared for a game or a test is one thing, but when our actions could mean the difference between life and death, being unprepared could have devastating results.

JBL First Aid founder John Bowker

John Bowker of JBL First Aid, which operates out of Peterborough, knows this all too well. Too often as a career firefighter responding to medical emergencies, he has heard this phrase upon arrival: “I didn’t know what to do!”

It was for this reason, Bowler says, that he started JBL First Aid—a certified Red Cross Training Partner based out of Peterborough. It was created with an aim to offer an alternative to the indecision and uncertainty many of us face during a crisis. By following a simple set of proven steps taught during a first aid program, people can confidently provide care in those critical few minutes before professional first responders arrive. With first aid training under your belt, you will know what to do.

Once the President of the local Red Cross branch and currently a Red Cross partner, John and his experienced team at JBL are licensed to use the Red Cross training template, and upon course completion issue Red Cross certification cards. John’s team consists of his daughters Rikki and D’Arcy—along with Adam Guerin and Alex DeCuhna, who have over 50 years’ experience combined in safety related fields ranging from firefighting and the military to life guarding and commercial diving.

The courses offered by JBL First Aid are as follows:

-> Standard First Aid with CPR/AED
-> CPR/AED (can be ‘C’ or ‘HCP’)
-> Emergency First Aid with CPR/AED
-> Emergency Medical Responder
-> First Responder
-> International Trauma Life Support
-> Marine First Aid
-> Oxygen Administration

All programs can be recertified (in a shorter amount of time than the full course), and all programs meet the WSIB requirements. JBL can also run audits for compliance and kit inspections to maintain accordance with WSIB. They also sell first aid kits, AEDs and other equipment.

Aside from their incredible knowledge, backgrounds and experience, what sets JBL apart from others is their mobility. They offer monthly courses held at the Peterborough EPC where individuals can sign up for their desired course, and for companies JBL can train onsite or provide an offsite classroom. All JBL instructors share a common goal: to make the seminar a relaxed, user-friendly experience!

These courses are for absolutely anyone and everyone who believes they can make a difference. Students can certify and recertify to meet their program requirements, and employees can become members of their workplace first response teams—while first aid training and certifications are resume enhancers for those looking for work. Even people simply looking for the confidence to deal with the unexpected can benefit from a first aid course.

JBL and its teachers are passionate about providing the tools to help people manage any medical situation. Our communities have the best Emergency Services around, but their success is based in part on that first link in the Chain Of Survival—bystanders who can start the ball rolling! By taking a course with JBL, you can help to make your community a more prepared and safer place.
