'Christmas By Candlelight' Returns For Lang Pioneer Village To Get In the Holiday Spirit

Lang Pioneer Village is celebrating a traditional pioneer Christmas with ‘Christmas by Candlelight’ for Dec. 2 and 3 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. announced on Wednesday.

The village is being lit with candles, lamps and lanterns. The nights feature horse-drawn wagon rides, campfire stories, old holiday treats, photo shoots and Christmas carols.

Including learning about a pioneer’s first Christmas in the wilderness at the Fife Cabin, stories are being told of the Michi Saagiig about how they survived and thrived in the winter months in the Aabnaabin Gallery.

Events and activities include holiday treat samples, reindeer games, meals, raffles and more.

Sunday at 7 p.m. features a live nativity with animals and a choir presented by the Keene United Church.

The Museum encourages visitors to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the Otonabee South Monaghan Food Cupboard at the Museum Shop.

Lang Pioneer Village Takes the Holiday Shopping Into the Past With Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 18

Lang Pioneer Village is providing holiday gift ideas with its Christmas Bazaar on Nov.18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building at Lang Pioneer Village Museum on 146 Lang Road.

This indoor/outdoor market will feature a variety of local vendors selling unique hand-crafted gift items.

Hot dogs and refreshments are available for purchase. Several raffle items including two fully decorated trees and over $1000 worth of prizes are at the event. Photos with Father Christmas run from 10 a.m to 12 noon.

For vendors wishing to participate in this year’s Christmas Bazaar, a few outdoor vendor spaces are still available and can contact roconnell@ptbocounty.ca for details.

Lang Pioneer Village Gets Spooky With All Hallows' Eve On Oct. 27 and 28

Lang Pioneer Village is getting in on the spooky fun, teaching the origins and traditions of Halloween on All Hallows’ Eve set for Oct. 27 and 28 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This year’s event is a hybrid of both the Museum’s Historic All Hallows’ Eve and Spooky Halloween events that feature both historic and contemporary Halloween elements.

Tractor and wagon rides, party games, storytelling, maze walk, fortune telling, face painting, a monster bash and more are some of the activities being hosted at the historic village.

Hot chocolate, treats and hot dogs (for a fee) are available at the weekend. All children will receive a treat bag at the end of each evening.

Lang Pioneer Village Celebrates Applefest Held On Oct. 1

Celebrate apples and the harvest season as Lang Pioneer Village is hosting Applefest running on Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A scavenger hunt and horse-drawn wagon rides will be available as visitors can learn about how settlers preserved the fall harvest and prepared for the long cold winter.

Several historic demonstrations are throughout the village including natural dyeing, chair caning, flour grinding at the Lang Grist Mill, cider pressing at the Cider Mill, broom making, log hand-hewing, sheep shearing, woodturning by the Peterborough Artisan Centre Wood Turners and more.

An antique clock and timepiece are being put on display brought by the Quinte Timekeepers. The Ayotte Cabin has historic reenactors, the 41st Battalion of Brockville Rifles, 1st Company, performing drills and demonstrating military marching. The Horse Barn is also hosting a threshing demonstration in the morning only.

The Marie Dressler Foundation display will teach everyone more about their upcoming Vintage Film Festival.

The Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building is selling chili and buns in the outdoor courtyard with Harvest dances performed by the Peterborough Scottish Country Dancers. An apple pie eating contest will test the stomachs and speed of patrons at 2 p.m. on the Village Green.

Lang Pioneer Village to Hold Corn Roast On Aug. 27.

Join the harvest season as the Corn Roast at Lang Pioneer Village Museum is happening on Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The family-friendly day has historic demonstrations, live music, and plenty of fire-cooked corn. Tour with a free horse-drawn wagon ride and tour the historic village.

The village will teach visitors how corn was used back then with examples such as corn bread, popcorn, dried corn, corn soups, and corn relish in the Fitzpatrick House, and sample some Johnny cake with maple syrup in the Milburn House.

The village will have demonstrations including threshing, bagging, fanning mill and corn grinding.

Traditional music is being performed by Lotus and Luke from the Weaver Shop porch.

A corn-on-the-cob eating contest taking place on the Village Green. Corn crafts and corn hole by the Ayotte Cabin are some activities that will be run.

Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors (60+), $7 for youths (ages 5-14) and free for children under five. Family admission is also available for $40 and includes two adults and up to four youths (ages 5-14). Village By Lantern Light Hits Lang Pioneer Village For Aug. 12

Lang Pioneer Village is getting some rustic nighttime charm as their Village by Lantern Light taking place on Aug.12 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., announced on Wednesday.

The village is illuminated by lanterns and candlelight to provide visitors with a different twilight-to-nightfall perspective of the historic village.

Guests will learn how settler families spent their time after dark. They will discover the sleep arrangements for families in various home sizes and what the typical bedtime routine involved including travelling overnight accommodations.

Visitors can also enjoy several other amenities and pioneer lifestyle during nighttime.

Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors (60+), $7 for youths (ages 5-14) and free for children under five. Family admission is also available for $40 and includes 2 adults and up to 4 youths (ages 5-14).

Visitors may purchase admission in advance via the Museum’s online shop but advance purchase is not required.

Guests are encouraged to bring a flashlight for added visibility and dress appropriately for the weather as an outdoor event.

26th Annual Transportation Day Car and Motorcycle Show is Coming to Lang Pioneer Village Museum in July

Lang Pioneer Village Museum invites the public to the 26th Annual Transportation Day Car and Motorcycle Show on Sunday, July 9 to witness a timeline of transportation from across Ontario.

Transportation enthusiasts will showcase their antique and classic cars and vintage motorcycles throughout the historic village from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Take a stroll through the village or hop on board a horse-drawn wagon ride, learn more about how transportation has changed over the years and the roles that various trades played in the creation of transportation methods.

Attendees can check out a variety of 19th-century modes of transportation such as sleighs, wagons and milk carts in the Transportation Barn. Stop by the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building (PCAHB) to view a Via Rail display, and enjoy music from the 50s to 80s with DJ Del and Jenny Jams.

View an antique clock and timepiece collection in the Menie General Store and see a variety of historic demonstrations throughout the village; such as broom making, shingle making at the Shingle Mill, and grinding at the Lang Grist Mill. Kids can take part in some schoolyard games and make a craft at the Ayotte Cabin.

Demonstrators and visitors can enjoy a pancake breakfast served while supplies last in the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building (additional fee applies).

The Keene Lions Club food truck will be onsite selling BBQ goods and there will be fresh Empire Cheese curd and bread available for purchase in the Cheese Factory. Haven Brewing Company will be also be at the event selling traditional European beers in the beer garden.

For those wishing to bring their vehicle to display, participant registration runs from 8 a.m. to noon with a $10 registration fee that includes admission into the village. The first 200 vehicles to enter will receive a complimentary dash plaque as a souvenir of their participation. Over 25 trophies will be awarded including the coveted People’s Choice and Lang’s Choice.

The Annual Father’s Day Smoke and Steam Show is Back at Lang Pioneer Village

The Lang Pioneer Village Museum’s 2023 event season kicks off on Sunday, June 18 with the 26th Annual Father’s Day Smoke & Steam Show.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, treat dad to a nostalgic Father’s Day filled with tractors and powerful equipment.

Watch as local collectors bring to life some of the oldest antique tractors and steam engines around as they compete for over 20 awards including Best Unique Exhibit, Best Display and Lang Pioneer Village’s Choice.

Watch as tractors try to balance on a tilted platform as fast as possible or maneuver through an obstacle course while balancing a tin can on a stick. View displays of smoke and steam collectibles, hit and miss engines, antique tool collections and more. The tractor games, including lawn tractor races, begin at noon.

Throughout the Village, learn about the many ways power was generated in the 1800s. See the Shingle Mill in full operation powered by volunteers and antique engines. Enjoy a variety of historic demonstrations including spring-pole lathe, broad axe hand hewing, natural dyeing, spinning, grinding at the Grist Mill and more. Hop on board a tractor and wagon ride and tour the historic village in style. Take some time to pause and enjoy live music by Glen Caradus & Fiddling Jay. Check out the model train display brought by the Ganaraska Railway Modellers and Jim Burchell. Kids can take part in some old-fashioned games in the schoolyard and make a paper whistle to take home. Don’t forget to visit the farm animals, on loan from Harley Farms for the summer.

Demonstrators and visitors can enjoy a pancake breakfast (served while supplies last) in the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building (additional fee applies). Refreshments and sweet treats will be available for purchase throughout the day at the Keene Hotel, or stop by Ben’s Kettle Corn who will be popping up fresh kettle corn. The Keene Lions Club food truck will also be onsite selling BBQ goods and there will be fresh Empire Cheese curd available for purchase in the Cheese Factory. If you haven’t already over-indulged in delicious treats, take part in the pie-eating contest on the Village Green.

The day will conclude with a tractor parade through the historic village beginning at 3 p.m.

Lang Pioneer Village Museum to Open May 23

The Lang Pioneer Village Museum announces they will be beginning their 2023 tour season on Tuesday, May 23.

May is Museum Month and a great time to start planning a trip to Lang Pioneer Village Museum. The Village will once again be bustling with costumed interpreters who will demonstrate the trades and pastimes of local settlers and Indigenous people of the 19th century.

The Museum will initially be open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. until June 16 for spring hours. Kicking off both the Museum’s summer hours and special event season is the annual Father’s Day Smoke & Steam Show on June 18.

The Museum’s 56th season will see the return of many popular special events including the Father’s Day Smoke & Steam Show, the Transportation Day Car & Motorcycle Show, Village by Lantern Light, Applefest, Historic All Hallows’ Eve and Christmas by Candlelight. Also returning this year is a late-summer harvest celebration, the Corn Roast. The Corn Roast will give visitors an opportunity to celebrate the early harvest season, with plenty of fire-cooked corn to enjoy. Also returning is the Christmas Bazaar, which brings together a variety of local artisans at the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building for a day of holiday shopping.

“Our staff and volunteers are excited to welcome everyone to the museum this summer. We've been working on opening up the heritage buildings, cleaning up the site, and freshening up our content with lots of opportunities to see and do throughout your visit with us," says museum operations manager Elizabeth King.

Visitors may purchase admission for both daily visits and special events at the door or in advance online. For those wanting to take advantage of all the museum has to offer this season, season passes are also available for purchase.

Lang Pioneer Village Hosting Zero-Waste Feast on the Farm Event For May 28 and 29

Lang Pioneer Village is selected to host the Feast On the Farm event, a two-day zero-waste fundraiser event for May 28 and 29 announced on Tuesday.

The event is a series that includes a gastronomic food-loving experience on the 28th followed by a full day of interactive sessions for industry professionals only on the second day.

The Culinary Tourism Alliance is hosting the event in partnership with Peterborough & the Kawarthas Tourism.

The consumer day event on May 28 brings together Chef Brad Watt of Publican House Brewery and Pub, Chef Tyler Scott from Rare Escape, and Chef Lisa Dixon, owner of Black Honey Cafe. Their curated dishes will be paired with local spirits by Persian Empire, craft beer by Bobcaygeon Brewing Company and Sustainable Winegrowing Ontario Certified wines.

“We’re excited to host such an inspired event,” says Joe Rees, director of tourism at Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development (PKED). “Feast On the Farm is a great opportunity for visitors to savour a menu that reflects the rich agricultural history of our region in a way that is genuinely in line with our sustainable tourism development goals.”

Every consumer day ticket supports recovery in the culinary tourism industry and includes a subsidy for industry professionals to attend the Feast On the Farm Industry Day the following day.
