Fleming Phoenix Roundup: Nov. 20; Team Mascot's Name Revealed

Both women’s and men’s Fleming Phoenix volleyball teams struggled over the weekend but saw some success with their men’s basketball team.

The Phoenix women’s volleyball team struggled over the seeking, losing to both the La Cita Coyotes on Friday and the Algonquin Wolves on Saturday at the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre.

Before the games, Fleming unveiled the name of their new mascot, ‘Blaze.’ The name was submitted during a community contest that began on Oct. 30. Other names considered were Fuego, Nimkii and Ash. Blaze won with more than 100 votes according to a Fleming press release.

Fleming lost all three sets to the Coyotes, 25-17, 25-23, 25-17.

They also fell to the Wolves in three sets, 25-15, 25-17, and 25-12.

The Phoenix men’s volleyball team saw better success, splitting their home weekend games. They handily beat the Coyotes, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-21 on Friday.

However, on Sunday, they lost all three sets to the Algonquin Wolves on 25-11, 25-20 and 26-24.

Both teams hit the road to take on the George Brown Huskies on Wednesday. The women take to the court at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.

The Phoenix men’s basketball team travelled to our nation’s capital over the weekend and saw mixed results.

Fleming was defeated by the Wolves 96-67 on Friday. Phoenix's top scorers included Tyler Murray with 22 points, Keandre Golaurb-Jackson with 13 points and Paul-Ryan Molay with 10 points.

The Phoenix rebounded with an 86-80 win over the Coyotes on Saturday. Jesean Wilson had 25 points, Tristan Paguirigan had 19 points and Miyake Ugbogbo had 18. They were the team’s top scorers.

Fleming continues their road trip, taking on their rival Durham Lords on Friday with tip-off at 7 p.m.
