Greek Restaurateur Ends 50-Year Legacy In Peterborough After Closing the Doors of His Final Business

Since 1976, George Anagnostou has been serving Greek and Mediterranean food in Peterborough and he has ended his 50-year legacy by closing the doors of his final restaurant, Nóstimo By The Original Greek, announced on social media on Wednesday.

According to a social media post, Anagnostou is retiring from the restaurant industry.

Nóstimo By The Original Greek originally opened in April 2021 at 184 Marina Blvd. It began as a take-out restaurant but expanded in November 2023 to include a dining room. It also featured quarterly wine and pairing nights, cooking classes, private functions and expanded food options (including fish specials and lamb).

Anagnostou’s head chef and business partner, Shannon Leclair, has worked with him since Nóstimo’s inception and is continuing her culinary career outside of Peterborough.

“What an incredible way to end my culinary career with an amazing business partner and great friend Shannon Leclair,” said Anagnostou.

His family immigrated to Canada in 1975 and made Peterborough his home, where he played hockey and attended high school.

He operated several restaurants — either owned by him or his parents — in Peterborough and the Kawarthas, including Nóstimo By The Original Greek; The Original FAT Greek StrEATery food truck in Ennismore; The Original Greek; the Shish-Kebob Hut and Corfu (the last two were owned by his parents).

“I’m honoured to serve you and share your special memories over the past 50 years,” he said.
