During construction, Maria Street will be closed to through traffic at the swing bridge. Local road closures and detours will be in place to accommodate construction. Parks Canada advises drivers to follow posted detour signage and plan their trips accordingly. The accompanying detour map outlines the designated routes.

Additional local road restrictions will be in place during construction. Trucks over four tonnes must follow the designated alternate truck route.

The closure affects roadway traffic only; navigation along the Trent-Severn Waterway will not be impacted.

The Trans Canada Trail multiuse pathway crossing Lock 20 will remain open and maintained throughout the winter, including a path to safely access Ashburnham Drive.

Parks Canada is working closely with the City of Peterborough to coordinate traffic diversions and minimize impacts on emergency services and public transit. Motorists should allow extra travel time and exercise caution near construction areas.

According to a press release, the new bridge will have a longer service life and a greater vehicle load-carrying capacity. The Maria Street Swing Bridge replacement is part of a coordinated infrastructure project that also includes the rehabilitation of the Peterborough Earth Dams and repairs to the Peterborough Lift Lock.
