PTBOCanada Featured Post: Explore 33-Kilometres of the Lang Hastings Trail From Peterborough to Hastings

Developed in 2012 on the abandoned Canadian National Railway rail bed, the picturesque Lang Hastings trail starts in Peterborough County and runs through the Trent River at Hastings.

The 33-kilometre stone dust trail is open year-round. Enjoy a variety of activities the trail has to offer such as walking, running, hiking, cycling, cross-country running and skiing.

The greenway trail prohibits motorized vehicle use in the summer however, they welcome snowmobiling during the winter months.

While crossing the Indian River and Ouse River bridges, you can experience a variety of different wildlife and ecosystems deep in the marsh and farmland.

Cyclists can look forward to the installation of a bike repair stand at the Keene Station gazebo in late fall.

The trail can be accessed from a number of different ways throughout the County including Beavermead Park and Technology Drive parking lots in Peterborough.

The trail is a former railroad, built in the 1870s and decommissioned in the 1980s.

The Keene Station historical plaque installed last year serves as a reminder of the trail’s rich history and how the landmark has changed to reflect the times.

“It’s an opportunity to pay respect to our history,” said Clementine MacLeod, Lang Hastings’ engagement and sustainability coordinator.

The Peterborough-Hastings Trans Canada Trail Association is a non-profit charity dedicated to managing the Lang Hastings Trail.

The trail receives occasional government grants but relies on donations for funding maintenance projects.

The property where the trail has been developed is leased by the Association from the Province of Ontario and The Cowan Family Foundation.
