Peterborough Petes Goalie Easton Rye Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) announced Monday that Easton Rye of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season.

The 19-year-old from Peterborough turned in his first career OHL shutout coming out of the break, making 25 saves in a 2-0 win over the Oshawa Generals on Dec. 28. He was back in the crease on New Year’s Day, stopping 36-of-37 as the Petes beat the Kingston Frontenacs 3-1. Rye backstopped the Petes to victory in Owen Sound on Saturday, making 41 saves as Peterborough prevailed 5-3 despite being outshot 44-29.

Rye is 20-8-1-1 on the season with a 2.86 goals-against average and .916 save percentage over 30 games. His 922 saves are the third-most in the league this season. A former fifth round (89th overall) pick by the Petes in 2022, Rye has played to a career mark of 31-26-3-2 with a 3.52 goals-against average and .902 save percentage through 68 games.

The Petes are back in action Jan. 8 as they host the rival Oshawa Generals. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Peterborough Petes Goalie Named OHL Goaltender of the Week

After ringing off three-straight wins, Peterborough Petes goaltender Michael Simpson has been named the OHL Goaltender of the Week announced on Monday.

Simpson had 1.32 goals-against average, .954 save percentage and one shutout in his last three games to win the honour.

He played a vital role in securing a playoff spot for the Petes in his 5-1 win with 20 saves over the Niagara IceDogs during Pink in the Rink night on Saturday. He also added a pair of victories over the Barrie Colts on Tuesday and Sunday. The Petes won 1-0 on the road and 8-3 at home against the Colts respectively.

A 19-year-old from London, Ont., Simpson owns a record of 19-18-3-1 with a 3.58 goals-against average and .891 save percentage over 44 games in his first OHL season. The 6-foot, 188Ib. netminder was Peterborough’s 10th round (193rd overall) pick in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection from the London Jr. Knights U16 program.

Petes Goalie Hunter Jones Named OHL Player of the Week For First Time In Career

The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Minnesota Wild prospect Hunter Jones of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL “On the Run” Player of the Week with a 3-0 record, 1.67 goals-against average and .943 save percentage.

Jones earns the award for the first time in his OHL career after backstopping the Petes to a perfect 3-0 record. On Sunday (October 20th), he stopped 28 of 29 in Sunday's 2-1 victory over the CHL's top-ranked Oshawa Generals, earning his 40th career OHL win in the process.

A 19-year-old native of Brantford, Ont., Jones is off to a 9-1-0-0 start in the 2019-20 season, posting a league-leading 2.41 goals-against average along with a .919 save percentage and one shutout.

Jones—who is honouring the late legendary broadcaster Gary Dalliday on his goalie mask—owns a career 40-34-2-2 record over 82 career OHL regular season contests, posting a 3.54 goals-against average and .896 save percentage with four shutouts. Originally Peterborough's fifth round pick in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection, Jones was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the second round of the 2019 NHL Draft.
