A Thursday morning trip to the convenience store turned into a memorable one for Indian River resident Gary L. after he uncovered an $80,000 prize on a scratch ticket.

Gary was already looking forward to his usual Thursday breakfast with two close friends when he decided to make a quick stop at a convenience store before meeting them.

A few tickets later, he had something much bigger to talk about.

The longtime lottery player, who has been playing since the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) first launched, picked up several tickets and returned to his truck to scratch them.

It was the last ticket that changed his morning.

“That morning, I arrived early and decided to go to the convenience store. I went in, picked out a few tickets from the display case, and headed back to my truck to play them,” Gary recalled while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect his windfall. “When I scratched the last one and uncovered a prize of $80,000, I couldn’t believe it!”

Even with the unexpected news, Gary managed to keep his winnings under wraps during breakfast.

“After we finished eating, I asked my friends to come to my truck and told them I wanted them to double-check something for me. They looked at the ticket and both of them confirmed I had won $80,000.”

Gary recently visited the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to collect his winnings, marking his first big lottery win after years of playing a variety of games, including LOTTO MAX, LOTTO 6/49 and INSTANT tickets.

The winning ticket was purchased at The Old Railroad Stop on Hiawatha Line in Hiawatha.

As for what comes next, Gary plans to put some of the money toward bills and share a portion with loved ones.

Not a bad result for a quick stop before breakfast.
