Hunter Street East Closure Due to Construction Extended to Jan. 29

$9.3 Million Investment Made For New Net-Zero Fire Station At Former Northcrest Arena Location
/The federal government and Federation of Canadian Municipalities have invested $9.3 million to construct a new net-zero fire station at the former Northcrest Arena location on 100 Marina Blvd., announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The announcement was made by Whitby Member of Parliament Ryan Turnbull, who also serves as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. He was present on behalf of Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Scott Pearce, President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).
“This transformative project will incorporate renewable energy, mass timber construction, and water-saving technologies, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and substantial operational cost savings of $24,270 per year for the city,” said Turnbull.
The $9.3 million investment is divided into $1,226,080 in grants and $8,173,910 in loans through the Green Municipal Fund.
The new station will replace the existing Fire Station 2 at Carnegie Road.It can no longer meet the city’s needs since being built in 1967, according to the City.
“The new Fire Station #2 will be the City’s first building that is designed, built, and certified as a Zero Carbon Building for both performance and design categories,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “This key investment in the City of Peterborough Fire Services will enhance community safety by reducing emergency response times while also protecting our environment by producing zero emissions.”
The net-zero building features automated control systems, ground source heat pumps, rooftop solar panels and a heat-recovery system. The building will also be constructed from mass timber instead of concrete, steel or aluminum to achieve a lower carbon footprint. It will also include water-saving features and be resituated to reduce flood risk and meet operational standards.
Construction completion is slated for this fall. The City and Mayor Leal have yet to determine what will happen to the Carnegie fire station location.

County Road 16's Gannon's Narrows Bridge to Undergo Repairs Beginning Sept. 5
/The Gannon’s Narrows Bridge repairs on County Road 16 will undergo repairs to its damaged structural components starting from Sept. 5, announced by the County of Peterborough on Friday.

The repairs will run until Oct.13.
During this time, the bridge will be completely closed to all traffic from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.
While the bridge is closed, the County states that there will be no access for any vehicles to cross over the bridge.

Infrastructure Project on Armour Road Between Hunter and Clifton Street
/Armour Road between Clifton Street and Hunter Street will be closed to through traffic, with access maintained for local traffic, during a major infrastructure project that will include replacing storm sewers, sanitary sewers and the water main as well as road reconstruction.

Local traffic with a destination within the road closure will be permitted, however travellers may experience delays within the construction limits.
The project, awarded to Green Infrastructure Partners Inc., is tentatively scheduled to begin on July 17. The majority of the work is scheduled to be completed by late fall of 2023. Any carryover work that remains will be completed between May and July 2024.
The project includes removal of existing infrastructure, excavation and grading, installation of new storm sewers and sanitary sewers, watermain, concrete curb and gutter, road base and asphalt, streetlights, sidewalk, tree planting, pavement markings and regulatory signage.

Vehicle detours
Southbound traffic will turn west at Parkhill Road East, south on George Street and east on Hunter Street to Armour Road.
Northbound Traffic will travel west on Hunter Street, north on Water Street and east on Parkhill Road to Armour Road.
Pedestrian detours
Pedestrians travelling north and south will take Rogers Street between Hunter Street and Hazlitt Street.
Transit detours
Peterborough Transit Route 7 will be rerouted northbound, continuing straight on Rogers Street, turning right on Dufferin Street and left on Armour Road, returning to the regular route.
Northbound stops on Armour Road at Douro Street, Macfarlane Street and Euclid Avenue will not be served by Route 7 Lansdowne during this construction.
The following temporary bus stops will be added:
Northbound on Rogers Street at Oxford Street
Dufferin Street at Armour Road

Parkhill Road West to Undergo Major Infrastructure Upgrade Beginning Monday; Detour Routes Posted

The work includes excavation, grading, removal and installation of storm sewers, sanitary sewers, watermain, storm, sanitary and water services, low impact development (LID) features, stormwater management, new curb and gutters and sidewalks. The project will also include structure adjustments, asphalt milling, base and surface asphalt installation, tree plantings, signage installations and pavement markings. Access to local traffic is being maintained during that time.
The project was awarded to Trisan Construction with completion expected by spring of next year.
Detour routes will be posted.
"The Parkhill Road West Reconstruction project is a crucial investment in our City's infrastructure,” said Mayor Jeff Leal. “The upgrades and improvements will enhance safety, promote efficient traffic flow, and contribute to sustainability through Low Impact Development Features as well as upgraded storm water management.”
Traffic management and calming measures will be in place including reconfiguring Parkhill Road at Bethune Street and at Aylmer Street to improve traffic and pedestrian safety, adding a raised median and closing the south leg of Bethune Street at Parkhill Road.
"We understand that road construction can cause inconveniences and we appreciate the patience and cooperation of the community during this project,” said Blair Nelson, City of Peterborough’s engineering and capital works director. “Our team will work diligently to minimize disruptions and maintain local traffic access to the greatest extent possible.”
Delays may be experienced by local traffic during the construction period.

Detour routes will be the following:
The eastbound traffic detour on Parkhill Road is Reid Street to McDonnel Street to Water Street to Parkhill Road.
The westbound traffic detour on Parkhill Road is George Street to McDonnel Street to Reid Street to Parkhill Road.
The alternate detour route for George Street southbound traffic is Barnardo Avenue to Wolsely Street to Chemong Road to Reid Street to Parkhill Road.
Elcombe Crescent will be closed from Water Street to Parkhill Road West for the duration of the detour routes. Access to local properties will be maintained.

Eastbound route will travel from Parkhill Road south on Reid Street, east on McDonnel Street, and turn north on Water Street where it will continue east on Parkhill Road
Westbound route will travel south on George Street from Parkhill Road to turn west on McDonnel Street, north on Reid Street to Parkhill Road where it will continue westbound travel.

Lansdowne Street West Bridge Construction Slated For May 23; To Be Completed In the Fall
/The City of Peterborough is completing work on the Lansdowne Street West Bridge over the Otonabee River starting on May 23 to be complete by the fall.
Lansdowne Street will be reduced to a single lane in each direction during the construction. Access for local traffic will be maintained during that time but may experience delays.
The work includes removing the asphalt and granular road base, inspecting the bridge approach slabs, installing new road base granular, base and surface asphalt on either side of the bridge.
The City has awarded the project to Dufferin Construction.

Peterborough Zoo Constructing Sloped Wheelchair-Accessible Walkway Beginning Monday
/The Riverview Park and Zoo are beginning construction on a sloped wheelchair-accessible walkway connecting the north parking lot to the playground with work scheduled to begin on Monday.

The zoo estimates its completion on May 12 according to a press release.
Access to existing accessible parking spaces is maintained at all times but alternate spaces and detours will be provided during this time. Access to the Electric Charging Stations are not affected but the public will be notified if this changes.
Funding for the project has been supported by Enabling Accessibility Fund, Employment and Social Development Canada.
