Anyone tried them out yet? Add your comments below.

New Public Bicycle Repair Stands Installed In Peterborough

In conjunction with B!ke: The Peterborough Community Cycling Hub and the City of Peterborough, there are now two public bicycle repair stands installed in the downtown core. The first one is at George and Simcoe just outside the doors of Peterborough Square. The second is at B!ke itself, for after hours repairs.

Each stand includes a tire pump (with a universal adapter), spanners, multi-tools and screwdrivers for quick repairs.

If necessary, scan the QR code and it will take you off to Bicycletutor.com to give you a further helping hand.

Two more repair stands are coming to Peterborough. One will be installed at Trent University (West Bank of Trent's Symons campus) and the second location is still to be determined.

Farm To Table Offering Culinary Foot Tours Of Downtown Every Wednesday

Starting this week (July 4th), Farm to Table will be offering weekly culinary foot tours of downtown Peterborough every Wednesday.

These tours will allow patrons to sample products from independent retail stores and restaurants across the downtown core, and will showcase some of the local, seasonal and artisanal foods that our community has to offer.

The tours will depart each Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. from the Downtown Farmer’s Market. "This is going to be a fun way to explore the downtown," says Farm To Table's tour guide, Donald Fraser. “We're going to be hitting up a number of local businesses, by foot and by fork.”

The Downtown Culinary Tours will include weekly stops at a number of retail outlets, including Chasing the Cheese, Naked Chocolate, and Black Honey Bakery. There will be beer tastings at local breweries, VQA wine tastings at local wine bars, and seasonal food samples at a revolving list of restaurants—including Rare Grill House, Brio Gusto, and the brand new Le Petit Bar.

Tickets for the tours are $25 per person. For more info, call Farm to Table at 705-977-0604, email donald@ptbolocalfoods.ca or visit Ptbolocalfoods.ca.

A Look At Charming Fleming Place In Downtown Peterborough (And Impact Of Development)

I am writing to increase awareness around the development plans at Fleming Place in downtown Peterborough.

Fleming Place is a charming laneway lined with homes built in the early 1900s and equally old and historical trees.

Preparation for a development which includes the construction of a new apartment building in the open green space is already underway.  The plans includes the removal of the majority of these beautiful trees and an entire re-landscaping of the property.

In my humble opinion, Fleming Place is a gem—an urban oasis—the likes of which I have never seen anywhere else. Anyone who has ever lived or visited there (particularly in the summer) can attest to this. It feels like you have walked into an urban forest even though you are in fact directly downtown. The trees provide an incredible amount of shade, cool breeze, habitat and a living example of our community's history. There are several gorgeous perennial beds on the property that have been built, cared for and maintained for my tenants. These are likely to go along with the trees.

Mass cutting of trees has already occurred, and much more is to come. I encourage people to come and wander down the laneway and enjoy it while you can. The removal of all these trees is an irreversibly devastating decision. Trees and green spaces are part of the new plan, but a century of growth cannot be replaced. It is not likely that anything can be done to stop a development plan already underway, but expressing how important you think neighbourhoods like Fleming Place and urban trees are to our community and collective quality of life can't hurt!

What's Your Take On Aesthetic Design Of Downtown Peterborough Bike Racks?

Now that the new downtown bicycle racks have been set up for a few weeks in downtown Peterborough, what are your thoughts on how they look? Are they easy on the eye?

I think the inspiration may have come from the Jeep logo (joking here, but there are similarities), although they aren't as beautiful as the single bicycle racks in Ottawa...

Or as glamourous as this bike rack on St. Clair West in Toronto...

They are still well used in general—and on a Friday night well after all the other cars have gone home to bed.

The feedback has been mixed on Twitter (as you'll see from the sampling below), but add your own comments below.

Lindsay's World Record LipDub Video That's Bringing Awareness To Their City

On May 31, 2012, the world's largest LibDub was shot in Lindsay's main street. With more than 9,300 people in attendance, the LipDub made history as the world's largest and Canada's first city LipDub. The LipDub was used as a way to bring their community together in a show of spirit and potential, and bring exposure to their city. Here's the final result in a video that already has more than 15,000 views—and national media attention—since being uploaded to YouTube Saturday...

Maybe Peterborough should create a fun video like this to promote our great city? What would your ideas be?
