Fleming College Student Administrative Council Announces New General Manager

Fleming Student Administrative Council (SAC) has announced Joel Willett as their new general manager.

Willett has held multiple roles on Fleming SAC including Director, President and and most recently Student Engagement and Governance Coordinator. He brings more than ten years of management experience to this role.

He is a Fleming College Alumni having completed the Police Foundation program in 2015.

Willett officially relieved Zoe King from this position on July 19.

Peterborough Utilities Group To Host Job Fair For Summer Students, 18 Positions Available

On Saturday, February 8th, Peterborough Utilities Group (PUG) will be hosting a job fair for summer students.

Candidates interested in summer employment within their group of companies are invited to attend the Rotary Education Centre at the Riverview Park and Zoo, from 9:30 a.m. until noon.

PUG will have Human Resources staff on hand to answer questions and provide guidance on the hiring process. Candidates must be available for full-time work from April 27th until August 28th, and have a valid “G” class licence.

Students must also be currently enrolled in full-time post-secondary education and returning to full-time studies in the fall. Visit their career section here to view their 18 summer student openings for 2020 and to apply online.

Recruitment Event At Flying Colours Corp. Passes With Flying Colours

Flying Colours Corp., which is celebrating 30 years in business, held its first Peterborough recruitment event on the weekend to attract new and existing talent to the expanding North American maintenance, repair, overhaul and completions company.

More than 230 people sent resumes prior to the event, and of those 50 face-to-face interviews were held with pre-screened candidates. In addition, more than 110 walk-in candidates attended and met with human resource and technical professionals to discuss opportunities.

Existing employees at this privately owned, family-run company explained their roles, management responded to specific company questions, and the HR team accepted resumes and organized interviews.

“We’re optimistic that we found some great candidates and will be working over the next week or two to make offers to some of those interviewed,” says Ian Ross, director of human resources, Flying Colours Corp.

“It was obvious from the look of surprise on some of the faces that they were impressed by the scale of our operation here and our capabilities in terms of program quality and complexity,” adds Ross. “As well as finding some great new talent, I think we clarified to many just what we do.”

Flying Colours Corp. Launching Series Of Recruitment Events

Flying Colours Corp. is launching a series of recruitment events to attract new and existing talent to the expanding North American maintenance, repair, overhaul and completions company. They take place Friday, March 22nd and Saturday, March 23rd at its Peterborough headquarters. 

A combination of existing and new roles will be highlighted during the two-day showcase. Flying Colours Corp. is hoping to fill in excess of 50 openings in its paint, avionics, maintenance, interiors, cabin installation and upholstery departments by mid-summer. They are using the recruitment event as a platform to showcase the types of roles on offer, the dynamic work environment and the career opportunities the business presents.

Many of the new roles are being created to support the addition of a new paint and maintenance hangar, which when completed will add a further 100,000 squared feet to the Peterborough facility.

Existing employees will be on hand to explain their roles, management will respond to specific company questions and the HR team will be accepting resumes and organizing interviews. Flying Colours specializes in the custom completion and maintenance of mid to large size business jets. Every project is unique and requires the talents and skilled labour of a variety of technicians and artisans to perform detailed, hand-crafted work.  

“We’re looking for additional people to join our work family as we continue to expand,” says Sean Gillespie, Executive VP Flying Colours Corp. “We’re interested in everyone from recent grads who want the opportunity to work towards their license to seasoned professionals, skilled craftspeople and aircraft technicians. Many people in other industries might not realize that their skills are transferable, which is why we’re holding this event.”

Participants will be able to view a business aircraft and learn about how working at Flying Colours provides the opportunity to earn a good wage, excellent benefits and enjoy career progression while performing interesting and varied work.

Peterborough Had Lowest Unemployment Rate In March

Great news for Peterborough, as new stats released show the city had the lowest unemployment rate of Canada's 34 census metropolitan areas in March.

Statistics Canada reports that Peterborough's rate fell to 4.3% in March—all the way down from 6% in February, 6.7% in January and 7.6% in December. Stats Canada analyst Vincent Ferrao says the unemployment rate in Peterborough hasn't been this low since way back in late 2003.

After having the second highest jobless rate of Canada's 34 census metropolitan areas back in November, Peterborough is now tied for the sixth best rate.

The province is projecting the Ontario economy will grow by 2.2 percent this year, so Peterborough needs to continue to capitalize on this momentum in the job front.

Maryam Monsef Encourages Businesses To Apply For Funding Through Canada Summer Jobs Program

The Government of Canada recently announced that it is fulfilling its commitment to double the number of summer jobs to be created for students, helping them build a stronger future and obtain the skills and experience they need to contribute to our collective economic growth.

Funding for the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program is also doubling to $220 million annually for the next three years beginning this year. This new funding will help expand the number of youth who can be hired from just over 34,000 in 2015 to up to 70,000 this summer.

According to a release from MP Maryam Monsef, in Peterborough-Kawartha the priorities focus on skilled trades, tourism, arts and culture, and community celebrations but all eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.

Says Monsef: "I encourage small businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and public sector employers in Peterborough-Kawartha to apply for funding through Canada Summer Jobs program so that we can help our students gain the skills and experience they need to be successful, while supporting employers who need additional staff for the summer.”

The application period opened on January 4th, 2016 and has been extended until March 11th, 2016. Applicants approved for funding will be able to hire students as early as May 2016.
