City of Peterborough Welcomes New Director, Asset Management and Capital Planning

Bloand has more than 15 years of municipal infrastructure and engineering experience to his new role, with expertise in asset management, capital planning, water resource systems, transportation planning and climate resilience.  

Ian has also served as Acting Director, Asset Management and Capital Planning, and Manager, Water Resource Systems , with the City of Peterborough. 

“Ian brings a tremendous depth of knowledge, leadership and experience to this role, along with a strong commitment to collaboration and long-term planning,” said Blair Nelson, Commissioner of Infrastructure, Planning and Growth Management with the City. “Having already served the organization in several key leadership positions, Ian has demonstrated a clear understanding of the infrastructure needs and priorities of our community. I’m excited to welcome him into this role and look forward to working together as we continue advancing important initiatives that support sustainable growth, climate resilience and reliable service delivery for residents.” 

A Crestwood Secondary School graduate, Ian holds a Civil Engineering Technology Advanced Diploma from St. Lawrence College and is a Certified Engineering Technologist through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.  

Throughout his career, he has led a wide range of infrastructure and planning initiatives while fostering strong working relationships with City departments, Council, Indigenous communities, regulatory agencies, consultants and community stakeholders.

City of Peterborough Introduces New Director, Financial Services

Hancock has over 25 years of accounting and municipal finance experience, including 19 years with the City of Peterborough in senior financial leadership roles. He has previously served as Chief Accountant and Deputy Treasurer and has supported the City’s budgeting, financial reporting, forecasting and financial governance functions.  

“Darren brings extensive municipal finance experience, strong leadership and a deep understanding of the organization to this role,” said Richard Freymond, Commissioner, Finance and Corporate Support Services. “His expertise in financial planning, reporting and governance, combined with his strong commitment to public service, will help support the City’s ongoing efforts to strengthen financial sustainability, modernize financial systems and processes, and enhance transparency and service delivery. I am confident he will continue to play a key role in advancing the City’s long-term financial strategy and support the organization’s top priorities.” 

Darren holds a Bachelor of Accounting (Honours) from Brock University and is a Chartered Professional Accountant. In his new role, he will oversee corporate budgeting, financial analysis, accounting and reporting, treasury functions, taxation, utility billing and revenue services.

“Having been born and raised in Peterborough and having attended high school at PCVS, I had the opportunity to observe the heartbeat of the City from just across the street. Trent University Appoints New Vice-President of Research and Innovation

Trent University has appointed Dr. Tana J. Allen, an internationally recognized classical archaeologist, social historian and accomplished senior academic administrator as the University’s next vice-president of Research and Innovation, effective Sept. 1.

Dr. Allen joins Trent from Memorial University, where she served as acting vice-president of Research and, previously, as acting associate vice-president of Research. Throughout her tenure, she worked with senior leaders to advance Memorial’s strategic research objectives and strengthen its international profile.

“Dr. Allen will be an outstanding addition to Trent University,” said Dr. Cathy Bruce, Trent president and vice-chancellor. “Her track record as a senior research leader with demonstrated skills in facilitating collaboration across disciplines, and her appreciation for Trent’s range of engagement and productivity will elevate our reputation as a research-intensive university that tackles complex issues from multiple vantage points. She is the right leader to champion Trent’s research and researchers, advancing Trent’s focus on healthy and sustainable environments and communities.” 

Dr. Allen’s research explores ancient architecture, medical practices and the influence of Greek and Roman ideas on the modern world. She is widely known for her work on the interplay between health, society and place in the ancient world. Her academic scholarship includes numerous publications, international conference presentations, major editorial roles and extensive archaeological field experience across the Mediterranean.

In addition to her academic contributions, Dr. Allen has provided national leadership through roles such as chair of ACENET’s Board of Directors, executive roles with the Ocean Frontier Institute and the Health Research Ethics Authority, as well as being Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) leader for Memorial and other organizations spanning research and innovation across the arts and sciences.

“I am honoured to join Trent at this exciting moment as the University focuses on further advancing its research profile,” said Dr. Allen. “Trent has an extraordinary reputation for excellence across disciplines, and a strong focus on interdisciplinary research that resonates deeply with my own values. I look forward to meeting and working with the entire community. She takes over the role from Dr. Holger Hintelmann, who has held the position in an interim capacity since 2024.

Peterborough County Hosting First Municipal Job Fair For Students On Feb. 13

Peterborough County is hosting its first-ever municipal job fair for post-secondary students from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Healthy Planet Arena on Feb. 13.

Lakefield Animal Welfare Society Appoints New Director of Operations

The Lakefield Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) Board of Directors has appointed Lyndsay Lisson-De Ell as its new Director of Operations.

Lisson-De Ell has a background in Community Support and Outreach within the non-profit sector and has successfully filled several roles at LAWS, including Adoption and Shelter Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator.

“Over the past two years, Lyndsay has been a vital part of the LAWS team and has built meaningful connections with our animals, volunteers and community,” according to a statement made by the Board of Directors. “Along with her extensive non-profit experience, this makes her uniquely qualified to lead the organization. Peterborough Community Health Centre Appoints Inaugural Executive Director

The Peterborough Community Health Centre (PCHC) has appointed Ashley Safar as its inaugural Executive Director.

According to a press release, Safar will work closely with the PCHC staff, board, and community partners to shape and expand the Centre’s programs and services and ensure they meet the community's diverse needs.

Safar joined the PCHC from the Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre, where she served as Executive Director.

“After an extensive, province-wide search, the Board is thrilled to welcome Ashley as our inaugural Executive Director,” said Jonathan Bennett, Co-Chair of the PCHC Board of Directors. “Her vision and leadership will guide the PCHC through this exciting new chapter. With our renovations at Peterborough Square and health human resources recruitment well underway, Ashley’s experience and commitment to inclusivity will ensure that PCHC becomes a hub for equitable, comprehensive care.”

Safar will officially begin her role on Jan. 6.

“I am honoured to be appointed as the inaugural Executive Director of the Peterborough Community Health Centre and excited to begin this important work,” said Safar. “Community Health Centres play a vital role in addressing the unique needs of our most vulnerable members, providing not just care but also connection and support. I look forward to collaborating with the community to ensure that everyone has access to the resources and services they need to thrive. Together, we can build a healthier and more inclusive future for all.”

Since March, the Centre has been led by interim co-executive directors David Jeffery and Christine Brander.

“We are deeply thankful for David and Christine’s tireless commitment and leadership,” said Bennett. “Their experience has been instrumental in launching our new CHC from the ground up, and we have benefited from their dedication at every stage of this journey.”

Kawartha World Issues Centre Appoints New Executive Director

Kawartha World Issues Centre (KWIC) announced on Tuesday that Margaret Zou has been appointed as the new executive director.

“We are excited to see the valuable contributions Margaret will undoubtedly bring to our team and are confident her skills and passion for social justice and sustainable development will greatly enhance KWIC’s efforts,” said Ryan Sisson, KWIC Board Chair.

Margaret earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors (BScH) in Life Sciences from Queen's University in Kingston. She holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Management and Assessment from the University of Liverpool and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, specializing in Environmental Health.

Recently, Margaret served as the SDG Network Coordinator, spearheading community-driven initiatives to raise awareness about the SDGs. Additionally, as the Lead Program Facilitator at Global Health Mentorships (GHMe), Margaret led a team of facilitators, ensuring the effective delivery of mentorship programs globally according to a press release.

Zou will focus on advancing climate action, promoting gender equality and supporting the broader goals of the SDGs, ensuring these important issues remain at the forefront of KWIC’s mission.

Peterborough Musicfest Seeks Volunteer to Join Board of Directors

Peterborough Musicfest is seeking a volunteer to join as a Director for its Board of Directors.

The term is for three years and starts in February. The role is roughly 25 hours per year.

  • Shape the future of Peterborough Musicfest by contributing to strategic goals and decision-making.

  • Be an ambassador for the festival within the community, forging connections with stakeholders, artists, and sponsors.
