Kawartha Youth Orchestra Launches Its RESONATE! Campaign For Music Education Bursaries

The Kawartha Youth Orchestra (KYO) is launching its RESONATE! campaign this Sunday to coincide with Giving Tuesday next week and recognize local philanthropists Ralph and Carol Ingleton announced on Wednesday.

The campaign raises bursaries for local children who cannot afford to pay for music education. The goal is to raise $70,000 for bursaries in 2022-23.

The Ingletons are being honoured during a rehearsal after KYO received an undisclosed donation. The senior orchestra rehersal is conducted by KYO artistic director Dr. Alexander Cannon.

“Music is part of our lives and having a youth orchestra in our community is simply wonderful,” said Ralph. “Helping young people with needs to make music is extremely important. I would hope that other musical friends will join in lending a helping hand.”

‘#GivingTuesday’ is a global movement and day of giving to non-profits, that encourages people to do good and unleash their power to transform their community.

Peterborough Fiddler “Irish Millie” Raises Over $2,300 For Terry Fox Foundation

Millie Shadgett, better known by stage name “Irish Millie” uses her fiddling talents to raise $2,343 for the Terry Fox Foundation through ‘Fiddling for Fox’ campaign.

The 15-year-old Lakefield College School (LCS) student began performing for her first live audience about six years ago, at the Peterborough Farmers Market.

It was around this time that she learned about Terry Fox. Having been touched by cancer in her own life, Millie says his story inspired her.

“I thought ‘I don’t have much money to give’ but if I use my fiddling gift to allow people to donate to this amazing cause, then I can raise money through that,” said Millie.

After the first successful Fiddling For Fox event, she decided she wanted to do an annual fundraiser for the Terry Fox Foundation.

This year, she ran two fundraising events at the Peterborough Farmers Market and LCS, raising a total of $2,343 for the Terry Fox Foundation.

At the Farmers Market, Millie included a number of local names as special guests in her performance including Washboard Hank and Ty Wilson.

“It was almost like a bunch of little shows in one big day,” recalled Millie.

Wanting to do something different through Fiddling For Fox this year, she wrote “If I Don’t Make It,” a song to honour Terry and his legacy.

“I was really inspired by Terry and his courage and his bravery, and so I wanted to write a song to convey that,” she said. “It was the way that I could show my inspiration from him, through music.”

The original song features a drum beat in the background that represents Terry’s feet as he ran.

“It was a lot of work, and it took a lot of time and effort, but it really was great to have that showcased for Terry Fox,” Millie continued.

Big Sugar to Rock The Venue's Stage For Dec. 7

Rock band Big Sugar has Peterborough as one of their tour stops as they are playing at The Venue on Dec. 7 announced on Tuesday.

The stop is part of the band’s ‘Heated 25th Anniversary Tour’ that includes locations such as Toronto, Montréal, Kitchener and Ottawa as several Canadian stops.

Pre-sale for tickets starts this Wednesday at 10 a.m. by using the code ‘MODO.’ Tickets go on sale this Thursday at 10 a.m. and can be purchased online. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the show beginning at 8 p.m. The event is for ages 19 and up.

Blue Rodeo Returns to The Peterborough Memorial Centre in December

Canadian country icons Blue Rodeo is returning to the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) on Dec. 28.

Music duo Brooks & Bowskill (Brittany Brooks and Jimmy Bowskill) are joining the show’s lineup as well.

In the over 35 years since forming, Blue Rodeo has released 16-full length albums and has been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

The band was in Peterborough on April 13 of this year, performing at the PMC during their Many A Mile tour.

"This concert is the ultimate way for us to finish off an incredible 2022,” said Jeremy Giles, PMC facility manager. “Blue Rodeo at the PMC is so symbolic of things being normal again and we cannot wait to have the guys back for another unforgettable evening.”

Tickets go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. and can be purchased in person inside the PMC at the Grant Thornton box office from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. or online at www.memorialcentre.ca.

The PMC Scoop member-exclusive online pre-sale runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday. Tickets range from $20 to $89.50 (plus applicable fees).

Tribute Band Against the Wind Bringing the Bob Seger Experience Back to Peterborough

Tribute band Against the Wind is bringing the Bob Seger Experience back to Peterborough on Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage of the Showplace Performance Centre.

The group consists of an eight-piece band, lead singer and three female backup singers in the band. The show will play through five decades of Seger jams such as “Night Moves”, “Roll Me Away” and the Grammy Award-winning hit “Against The Wind.”

The Toronto-based tribute band’s “Heartland Rock” performance guarantees an authentic vocal portrayal of Seger-Rock.

“(The audience) is going to get a very high-calibre representation of Bob Seger’s music,” said Jeffrey Dean Goldstein, Against the Wind’s drummer. “It’s energetic, it’s tight, it’s powerful. The show is very well-paced.“

He says Against the Wind emulates the same Seger-style rock performance Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet band, a group Seger formed in 1974, would give the crowd.

“It’s going to be a feel-good type of experience because when people hear this music they think back to their youth,” explained Goldstein. “There’s so many things that people did in life to this music, and (the show) brings back these memories.”

For the younger crowd, Goldstein assures the calibre of the high-energy show will entertain them.

“People will be up in the aisles dancing, like they do at every show, and singing along. That’s what we encourage,” he said.

Goldstein formed the tribute band in 2012. He says he’s been a Seger fan since he was 13.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns, the band was unable to tour for the last couple of years and say that they are happy to be back now in 2022.

“Peterborough’s been wonderful to Against the Wind,” said Goldstein. “We played at Musicfest in 2018 and we’re trying to get a spot for next year. We used to play at Market Hall, we performed there three times and we were very well-supported.”

Doors open for the show at 6:30 p.m. and it will start at 7:30 p.m.

Following ticketed events at Market Hall on Thursday and Friday evenings, free performances were held throughout the weekend in Nicholls Oval park as part of Peterborough Folk Festival.

First organized in 1989 as part of the now defunct Peterborough Arts Umbrella, the festival became a not-for-profit organization in 2001 and a registered charity in 2018.

The mandate of the festival is to promote folk music and arts within the Peterborough community as well as provide safely accessible venues and diverse audiences for both local and Canadian touring musicians.

The 2022 edition of Folk Fest featured acts such as the Sudbury string band, Murder Murder.

I, The Mountain from Kitchener played through sunset and into the evening.

Afie Jurvanen, known by his stage name, Bahamas headlined the show with a packed performance on Saturday Night. Jurvanen was born in Toronto and raised in Barrie.

On Sunday the 12-piece band from the Niagara area, My Son The Hurricane performed during the day. Lead singer Jacob Bergsma, wore a Zellers smock to commemorate the announcement that the Canadian company would be returning.

In addition to the performances, the festival featured an artisan village, a food village and valet bicycling parking provided by B!KE Community Bike Shop. Reusable dishes were used by food vendors and a team of volunteers washed and returned them to keep the festival as eco-friendly as possible.

The Peterborough Folk Festival is a volunteer-run, non-profit, registered charity organization and relies on the generosity of sponsors and donors to keep the event free.

Attendees were happy to welcome them back to Kawarthas, by filling the park and dancing into the night. The Strumbellas did not disappoint. With a high-energy performance they had the crowd singing along to their hits such as “Spirits,” “We Don’t Know,” and “In This Life.”

The evening was concluded with an encore featuring a cover of Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much.”

Lead singer Jimmy Chauveau described the evening as “all sorts of magic” and that he couldn’t wait to come back.

54-40 Fills Del Crary Park With Biggest Show Of the Season For Peterborough Musicfest

It was a packed house at Del Crary Park as rock band 54-40 had the city on their feet at Peterborough Musicfest on Wednesday night.

The band wasted no time in getting the crowd pumped, opening with their hit song ‘Nice to Luv You.’ They followed their act with several more fan favourites such as She La, Ocean Pearl and I Go Blind. During their encore, the band slipped in a cover of Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ in the middle of their set.

This concert had the biggest attendance of the season according to Tracey Randall, Musicfest general manager.

“There are over 8,000 or 9,000 people here, she said. “This is more than the Sam Roberts band.”

The band’s last appearance in Peterborough was at Musicfest on July 31, 2019.

Children's Music Group Wiggles To Perform At Peterborough Memorial Centre in October

As part of their Big Show Tour!, Children’s music group ‘The Wiggles’ is performing at the Peterborough Memorial Centre (PMC) on Oct. 7 announced on Tuesday.

The group has been entertaining children for over 30 years. Their Treehouse TV shows are on in six million homes and the number one program with kids aged 2 – 11 across all kid’s networks in Canada. Photo courtesy of The Wiggles.

The group is touring Canada from Sept. 28 until Halloween and have not performed in the country in three years.

New Wiggles Tsehay Hawkins, Caterina Wiggle and John Wiggle, from the Fruit Salad TV series are new additions to the tour.

"We're so excited to be coming back to perform in Canada,” said Anthony Field, Blue Wiggle. “The show also features a variety of dance styles and performances, and we're bringing all our Wiggly friends too."

Tickets are available on the group’s website or through the PMC website starting on July 22. Children under a year old have free admission but must sit on the lap of someone with a valid ticket.
