The Canadian Citizenship Ceremony had more than 40 people (representing 21 countries) take the Oath of Citizenship on Thursday (November 13th) at the Canadian Canoe Museum. It was a joyous occasion with high fives, hugs, smiles and laughter all around. Have a look at these photos we captured.

Peterborough Is Now At 81,000 Strong

The Peterborough population sign entering our city used to be stuck at 74,000 but has been recently been updated to 81,000. We're a growing city!

The Iconic Bud's Music Centre Purchased By Long & McQuade

Bud's Music Centre on Alymer St., which first opened in town in 1968, has been purchased by Long & McQuade as the owners are retiring.

As of October 6th, Bud's Music will be no more, and the well wishes and memories from loyal customers over the years are coming in on the Facebook announcement (see below) posted by Bud's. There will be no job losses, as the employees will now be Long & McQuade employees.

Look At The Sinkhole On Millbrook's Main Street

[UPDATE: King Street is open again after repair crews worked overnight to fix it.]

A water main break in Millbrook on Friday (August 22nd) has caused a portion of the main street in the town to buckle. Millbrook is now under a boil water advisory, and residents are advised to boil the water for one minute before using it for cooking, drinking, and teeth brushing. A Peterborough Man Who Has Been Playing The Lottery 35 Years Just Won $10 Million

Peterborough's John Pirie won $10 million in the Lotto 6/49 on the weekend... $10,395,605.70, to be exact. “It’s been my weekly ritual for 35 years [to play the lottery],” Pirie says in an OLG media release. “On the way to work at 5 p.m. every Sunday night, I stop at the gas station to check my tickets.” Pirie had five tickets for Saturday’s draw—and his big win came on the last one he checked.

Man Being Treated In Toronto Hospital For Life Threatening Injuries After Shooting In Peterborough

POLICE MEDIA RELEASE
Robbery with Violence Arrest:

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Monday evening (July 28, 2014), police arrested Ryan Greer, 20, of Raymond Street. Greer is charged with robbery with violence; accessory – attempt to commit murder; and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. He was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court later this morning (July 29). The victim is currently in stable condition at St. Michael’s Health Centre in Toronto. Police continue to look for other suspects possibly involved in this incident and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service at 705-876-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

July 28th release

**Special Police Media Release**
 
On Monday July 28, 2014 at 5:45 pm Peterborough Lakefield Community Police received a call to Time Square Apartments, 211 Hunter Street East in regards to a disturbance, possibly involving firearms.  Several officers arrived within minutes and located the victim in a second floor hallway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.  The victim, a 40 year old male was transported to Peterborough Regional Health Center with undetermined injuries.  He was subsequently transported to St Michael’s Health Center in Toronto by air ambulance.  The victim is being treated for life threatening injuries.  It has been determined that 3 – 4 suspects attended an apartment unit in the building and became involved in an interaction with residents of the unit.  The victim was subsequently shot by one of the suspects in a second floor hallway during the interaction.  The building was contained by the first responding officers and the Emergency Response Team was called to the scene as it was unknown if the suspects had fled the apartment complex.  Police are now actively seeking 3 – 4 male suspects involved in this shooting who may have fled the scene in an older model dark coloured vehicle.  Members of the Criminal Investigation Unit, Major Crime are investigating this incident and are asking anyone with information regarding the suspects or vehicle to call police or CrimeStoppers.

Groovy: New Online Payment System For Large Article Collections

A new online tool will allow City of Peterborough residents to arrange for curbside collection of their large articles from the comfort of their home.
Visit the City’s Waste Management webpage. Under “Current News” there, select “Large Article Collection Info”. Then click on “On-line Purchase” and then choose the collection date you prefer, the items you want collected, and set up an account with your credit card number for payment.

You can also go old school, as Large Article Collection can also be scheduled in person at City Hall, 500 George Street North or the Public Works Office, 182 Townsend Street. The cost for large article collection remains at $15 for the first item, plus $5 for any additional items. The next Large Article Collection takes place on Monday July 28, 2014. Payment must be made by the Thursday preceding collection (July 24th). Call 705-742-7777, ext 1657 for more information.
