GPHSF Accepting Registration For Inaugural Charity Volleyball Tournament to Support Concussion Education and Awareness For Youth Sport

In support of concussion education and awareness for youth sport, the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation (GPHSF) has announced its inaugural Charity Volleyball Tournament at Adam Scott CVI on Feb 1.

Only 12 teams are available for the recreational coed tournament. Teams are $240 with a $50 tax receipt. Registration includes prizes and swag, six guaranteed games (sets) plus playoffs (single elimination knockout), referees, 50/50 and activities throughout the day. “Concussion education and awareness is something that our Foundation has funded for a very long time” said Vince Bierworth, GPHSF executive director. “Over the past few years, we have been able to provide funding to two very important initiatives; PACA (Peterborough Athletics Concussion Awareness) and the H.O.P.E Bursary in Honour of Steve Montador. This recreational coed tournament will be a fun day that helps us continue supporting these important concussion programs.”

Peterborough Petes To Continue Gav’s Corner For Type-1 Diabetic Support

The Peterborough Petes with forward Gavin Bryant is continuing the Gav’s Corner initiative aimed at uniting and supporting individuals impacted by Type 1 Diabetes, announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The initiative was started by Bryant and the Niagara IceDogs in September of this year.

It was created with the dual mission of offering support and fostering valuable conversations within the Type 1 Diabetes community. The initiative seeks to bring together people who understand the unique challenges of living with Type 1 Diabetes while also advancing the search for a cure.

The campaign was inspired by Bryant’s sister’s diagnosis in 2021 and his former roommate in Owen Sound, Mark Wooley, both with Type 1 Diabetes.

Bryant was acquired by the Petes in a trade on Oct. 22 and was adamant on continuing the program in Peterborough.

“It has been my goal to recognize and learn about those affected and ultimately help in the fight for a cure,” said Bryant. “This is my way of bringing those affected together for a night of hockey and ultimately just a person to talk to that wants to help.”

Every home game, a total of four tickets will be donated to a family impacted by Type 1 Diabetes. The family in attendance will also receive a video board shoutout and a meet and greet with Bryant after the game. Interested families can apply by filling out an online application.

The program will be facilitated by Morgan Blaind, Petes Coordinator of Marketing and Community Engagement, who previously worked on Diabetes Night in 2022 with former Petes goaltender Michael Simpson, who lives with Type 1 Diabetes.

“We’ve had amazing support from the community in the past with our different player initiatives,” said Blaind. “I’m looking forward to working with Gavin and seeing the support of the program.”

Peterborough Petes Cannot Hold Lead; Lose 4-3 In Shootout to Oshawa Generals

The Petes held the lead for most of the game but let the Oshawa Generals come back to win 4-3 in a shootout at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday.

Peterborough drew first blood as the Petes forced a turnover and go the puck to Quinton Pagé. He buried it past Isaac Gravelle top shelf for a 1-0 score. Oshawa responded just five minutes later to tie it at one after the first period.

The second period was all Peterborough as Ryder McIntyre received a breakout pass from Petes captain Jonathan Melee. The former was able to slip it by Gravelle to restore their one-goal advantage over their rivals. They extended their lead as Grayden Strohack fed an uncontested Adam Levac in the high slot to score on the backhand for a 3-1 lead going into the third.

Oshawa was able to cue the come back as Ben Danford scored 12 seconds into the third period to cut the deficit in half. Matthew Buckley tied the game as he ripped it top shelf from the high slot for a 3-3 tie.

With overtime settling nothing, the game went to a shootout. The following are the results:

Peterborough Petes Forward Named Alternate Captain For 2024 U17 World Challenge

Peterborough Petes forward Colin Fitzgerald was named as an alternate captain for Canada Red at the 2024 U17 World Challenge from Nov. 3 to 9 at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena in Sarnia.

He was named one of the alternate captains alongside Alessandro Di Iorio, Sarnia Sting forward as the other alternate and Landon DuPont, Everett Silvertips defenceman as captain.

They were named to their respective leadership roles before the puck drop against Finland which the Canadians won 3-1 on Sunday.

“(Wearing the Canadian jersey) is something that I have dreamt of ever since I was a little kid,” explained Fitzgerald. “I have watched pretty much every event that Canadian teams have played in and to see (the Maple Leaf) on my chest makes me very proud knowing that I am representing my family here. I am the first person in my family to play for Team Canada so I am very honoured and hopefully I can keep wearing [the Canadian jersey] in the future.”

Fellow Pete Blake Gowan joined Fitzgerald for Canada Red.

“We’re very excited for Colin and Blake,” said Michael Oke, general manager and vice president of operations in a prior interview. “This is a great opportunity for them to play with the top talent in their age group from around the world. We’re looking forward to watching them both represent their country as they compete for gold.”

In 12 games with the Petes in his rookie campaign, Fitzgerald has four goals and three assists for seven points.

The Peterborough native was selected by the Petes in the first round, third overall of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection. Last season, he played 34 games with the U16 Peterborough Petes scoring 39 goals and adding 25 assists for 64 points. In eight playoff games, he scored 13 times and added eight assists, helping the Petes to the OMHA Championships and the 2024 OHL Cup.

In six OHL Cup games, the 6’1”, 174 lbs centre finished tied for the tournament lead in scoring with eight goals and five assists for 13 points, leading the Petes to a semi-final finish and being named to the All-Star team.

Canada Red plays the United States on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.

RedBlacks Sweep Kinsmen Minor Football League Championships

The junior and senior RedBlacks swept the Kinsmen Minor Football League Championships over the Roughriders at Thomas A Stewart Secondary School on Saturday.

The Junior RedBlacks defeated the Roughriders 42-8, capturing their third consecutive championship. AJ Galloway led the scoring for the RedBlacks with five touchdowns, adding two kicked converts. Cody Laurant added a single touchdown and Ronnie Hope added a kicked convert. Mason Earnshaw scored the single touchdown for the Roughriders and Jacob Cahorn kicked a convert.

AJ Galloway was named the Ken Butcher Junior Championship Game MVP for a second consecutive season.

The Senior Championship saw two high-scoring teams get into a defensive battle. The RedBlacks topped the Roughriders by a score of 14-6. Brody Munnings scored two touchdowns for the RedBlacks while Chase Coghill added a kicked convert. Michael Porter scored the lone touchdown for the Roughriders.

Registration Open For Third Annual GPHSF Charity Bonspiel

Registration is now open for the third annual Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation (GPHSF) Charity Bonspiel, held on Feb. 15 at the Peterborough Curling Club.

“We are really excited for our 3rd Bonspiel in partnership with Imprinted Apparel Store. This event continues to grow each year. The response remains incredibly positive. We have a great time putting it on and being part of this event” said Vince Bierworth, GPHSF executive director. “Funds raised from this event will continue our mission to broaden health equity and access to healthcare for the residents in Peterborough City and County as well as Hiawatha and Curve Lake First Nations.  Funds will support our partnership with the Peterborough Family Health Team, along with many other community organizations we work with.”

Registration is $300, with a $60 tax receipt. The day includes two games along with breakfast and lunch. There are $2,000 in prizes to be won provided by Imprinted Apparel Store and $500 in prizes provided by Goldline. Other activities such as trivia challenges, raffle draws, cornhole boards and many other opportunities to win prizes will be at the event.

Participants can register online. Only 24 teams are available. GPHSF notes that participants should have some experience with the game and their equipment. They will not be able to provide on-ice training for beginners.

Peterborough Petes Still Searching For First Win After 2-1 Shootout Loss to Niagara IceDogs

The Petes are still searching for their first win as they fell to the Central Division-leading Niagara IceDogs in a 2-1 shootout loss at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Tuesday night.

The scoring did not start until the final minute of the first period. Ethan Czata was able to jam the puck, which was caught in Petes’ goaltender Zach Bowen’s pad, to make it 1-0 for Niagara.

Peterborough retaliated over halfway through the second period. The Petes intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and immediately had an odd-man rush. The puck was passed to Brennan Faulkner and he beat the IceDogs goalie short side for his first career OHL goal and a 1-1 tie.

With no goals in the third period and overtime, the game had to be decided on a shootout.

Peterborough Lakers Announce Pete Dalliday As New Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships

A familiar face is joining the Peterborough Lakers as Pete Dalliday becomes the team’s new Director of Community Engagement and Partnerships, announced on Wednesday morning.

In this role, he will help expand the Lakers' footprint in the local sports landscape, Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) and across Ontario.

“We are excited to have Pete join our team in this capacity,” said Len Powers, Chairman of the Board. “His connection to the community and understanding of the Lakers' values make him a perfect fit as we strategically grow our presence and engage more deeply with our fans. Pete's enthusiasm will be key as we build the future of lacrosse here in Peterborough.”

Dalliday has been well-known for his game commentary on YourTV for the Lakers and Peterborough Petes and with local radio and TV.

According to a press release, with his extensive experience in broadcasting, Dalliday will help elevate the Lakers' marketing strategies, driving new sponsorship opportunities and increasing awareness of the sport throughout the region. The Lakers believe that his leadership in this new role will contribute to growing lacrosse in the area and beyond.

“I’d like to thank the board for this opportunity to help lead such an iconic franchise,” said Dalliday. “As someone who has always felt a deep connection to the Lakers—whether as a fan, former player, or from the booth—this role feels like a natural fit. Kinsmen Minor Football League Championship Set After Playoff Games

The Kinsmen Minor Football League (KMFL) has entered the postseason as it started its playoffs at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School (TASS) over the weekend.

The action started with the Senior Roughriders eliminating the Argos 38-14. Hayden Phair scored two touchdowns for the Roughriders while Michael Porter, Ryan Donato and Royce Adderley added a single score. Kaden Curtis kicked four converts. Parker Vivian and Ethan Bebbington scored for the Argonauts, with Chase Rimes adding a kicked convert.

The first Junior game of the day had the Roughriders eliminating the TiCats 24-0. Jackson Buck led the scoring for the Roughriders with two touchdowns. Jacob Cahorn added a single score and kicked three converts.

The second Senior playoff saw the RedBlacks eliminate the TiCats 54-7. Brody Munnings led the scoring for the RedBlacks with four touchdowns. Danial Consiglio, Mason Desroche, Brock Hendren and Harley Rock each added single scores. Chase Coghill kicked three converts. Lukas Zoric scored the single touchdown for the TiCats, with Lucas Morissey adding a kicked convert.

The day's final game saw the Junior RedBlacks eliminate the TiCats 40-0. Easton Schenk scored two touchdowns and also kicked a convert. Carter Gray, Cody Laurant and Brycen James each found the endzone as well. Ronnie Hope and AJ Galloway each added two kicked converts.

The KMFL finals are set for this Saturday at TASS. The Roughriders and RedBlacks will battle in both divisions to capture the KMFL Championship.  Junior action kicks off at 10 a.m, followed by the Senior final at noon.
