Repairs to Kirkfield Lift Lock To Begin; Temporary Lane Closures on Kirkfield Road

Parks Canada advises that there will be intermittent single-lane closures on Kirkfield Road, at Lock 36 near the community of Kirkfield in the City of Kawartha Lakes between Feb. 21 and Feb. 24.

The single-lane closure is required to facilitate the placement of a crane as work continues on repairs to the Kirkfield Lift Lock.

Flaggers will be in place, and the public can expect short delays.

New for this spring are offerings focused on Ancient Egypt. The six-week course “Wonders of Egypt: The Great Tombs, Temples & Towns of the Pharaohs” begins on March 22, as well as a special Ancient Egypt weekend running April 29 and 30. Here, participants can choose from a single workshop (for $40) or the full weekend experience with four distinct workshops (for $100). Workshops include: The Great Pyramids of Giza, Valley of the Kings: The World’s Most Famous Burial Grounds, Canadians on the Nile – Early Explorers in Egypt, and Secrets of Egypt Revealed – Recent Discoveries in Egypt.

Additionally, multi-week courses and workshops will provide participants the opportunity to get creative with watercolours, writing and more. All in-person classes take place at Catharine Parr Traill College.

Courses starting at $140 (including HST) for the series, and workshops start at just $40 (including HST), plus appropriate materials. Registration for all courses and workshops is available online.

City Services; What's Open and Closed on Family Day 2023

Many City of Peterborough services will be offering modified hours and some City facilities will be closed for Family Day on Monday, Feb. 20.

City Hall

City Hall, including the Tax Office, Clerk’s Office and Building Services, will be closed. Online services are available.

Garbage and recycling

There will be no changes to garbage and recycling on Monday, Feb. 20.

The Recycling Depot at 390 Pido Rd. remains open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

The City/County Landfill at 1260 Bensfort Rd. will be closed.

The Hazardous and Electronic Waste Depot at 400 Pido Rd. will be closed.

Public Works

Public Works can be reached by phone 705-745-1386. This line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 

Arenas Division

Quaker Foods City Square will be open, weather permitting, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Visit the website for updates.

Arenas will be available to user groups for scheduled ice time.

Healthy Planet Arena will be open from noon to 10 p.m. The Snofest Family Skate with Snofest Pete takes place from 1:10 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the Leon’s Ice Pad. $5 per skater. Skaters can Register now to guarantee your spot. 

Kinsmen Civic Centre will be closed.

Facility booking inquiries for the Arenas Division are not available on Feb. 20.

Peterborough Memorial Centre will be open as the Peterborough Petes host the Sudbury Wolves at 2:05 p.m. Memorial Centre event tickets are available for purchase online.

Art Gallery of Peterborough

The Art Gallery of Peterborough will be closed on Feb. 20.

City-operated child care centres Pearson Day Care and Peterborough Day Care will be closed on Feb. 20.

Sport and Wellness Centre

The Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre will open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visit www.peterborough.ca/recreation for information about schedules and programs at the Wellness Centre.

Downtown Youth Space

The Downtown Youth Space at 201 McDonnel St. will be closed. To learn more about free, drop-in programs for youth aged 13 to 18, visit www.peterborough.ca/dys.

Transit

Peterborough Transit will operate on the holiday service schedule on Feb. 20.

The Peterborough Sport & Wellness Centre will be hosting a free Fun Swim with special guest Snofest Pete!

Bring your family and friends for a free fun swim, admission rules still apply: 

• Swimmers age 15 and under are required to wear wrist bands for Fun Swims. 

• Children under 10 must be supervised in the water by an adult age 16+ (maximum of 3 children to one adult).

• Swimmers must be 42” tall and are required to pass swim test to use the slide.

• The maximum capacity for this swim is 175 (therapy pool 44 persons max); access cannot be guaranteed if capacity is met.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for the City of Peterborough’s newest recreation complex and community hub that is under construction, with an opening date expected in fall 2024.

To invite sponsorship inquiries, a Notice of Intention to Solicit Sponsors has been posted to the City website to outline potential sponsorship opportunities associated with the new facility that will include a twin-pad arena, a library branch and other amenities.

Businesses are invited to reach out to the City to express interest in sponsoring this new facility. Sponsorship opportunities, including naming rights and a commercial lease space, offer businesses access to advertising, marketing and engagement of audiences at the new facility. Details about the facility, different sponsorship opportunities, contact information and an outline of the process can be found within the Notice of Intention.

The City’s new multi-purpose facility will serve a significant segment of the community and offer sponsors the chance to connect with audiences enjoying the services in the facility, said Scott Elliott, corporate sponsorship program manager with the City of Peterborough.

“Sponsorship is an excellent way for businesses to align their brands and products or services to facility users. $104,200 Ontario Trillium Grant Supporting New, Sustainable Fundraising Strategy

Community Counselling and Resource Centre (CCRC) welcomed MPP Dave Smith on Friday to hear more about the $104,200 Resilient Communities Fund grant it received in 2022.

The grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) was used by CCRC to work with a fundraising firm, helping develop a fundraising strategy and plan to create new, sustainable sources of revenue.

Funding from the grant supported the hiring of a fundraising consultant, staff resources and the purchase of a subscription for a grant database.

"Today's announcement of $104,200 has helped the Community Counselling and Resource Centre to recover from the pandemic,” MPP Dave Smith said. "By focusing on new ideas to build for the future, they are able to continue focusing on the important work they do best, helping to support residents in the community.”

People from all areas of Peterborough City and County and now Northumberland rely on CCRC to provide them with low or no cost counselling and/or services through the Housing Resource Centre.

"We are so fortunate to have received funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation" said Kirsten Armbrust, executive director of CCRC. "This grant has allowed us to work with a consultant to strengthen our fundraising program. We are committed to the sustainability of our organization and fundraising is an integral part of that process."

Starter Company Plus Showcase Returns To Celebrate Local Small Businesses

Peterborough & the Kawarthas Economic Development (PKED) will host their Starter Company Plus Showcase on Feb. 28 at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre; celebrating the program’s successes in launching and growing local small businesses.

The Starter Company Plus Program launched in 2017 and have assisted over 215 local entrepreneurs and more than 174 small businesses to date; creating over 200 jobs in the local economy.

After a hiatus due to COVID-19, the event will celebrate participants and grant winners from the seven intakes of the Starter Company Plus program that occurred from 2020 to 2022.

The Peterborough & the Kawarthas Business Advisory Centre (BAC) delivered virtual entrepreneurship and small business training to 86 individuals in the City of Peterborough and Peterborough County during the pandemic. The participants have been eagerly anticipating the return of the event which celebrates their successes through their businesses.

PKED says more than 24 businesses are confirmed to participate, with more to come. Businesses ranging from culinary, wellness and local goods to tourism experiences and professional services will showcase their products and services while networking amongst fellow local entrepreneurs.

Staff and board of directors at PKED are inviting members of the media, community partners and stakeholders to attend and show their support for the small business community from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the 28th. Dave Warda Begins Two-Year Term As President of Peterborough & District Labour Council

Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation’s Dave Warda has started his two-year term as President of the Peterborough & District Labour Council announced by the latter on Wednesday.

His vision is of solidarity among the many Peterborough area unions and a focus on local issues.

“Housing insecurity, affordability and an investment in public services are national and provincial issues, but we also face these issues every day here in the city and county of Peterborough,” said Warda.

According to a press release, Council has already begun planning for its annual events – Day of Mourning on April 28 and Labour Day
