Kawartha Downs Presents: 'The Battle of Quebec VS. Ontario' Truck and Tractor Pull

Gates open at 4 p.m. with pulls beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Scottish Tea at Hutchison House Museum

Celebrate Martha Hutchison’s birthday with Scottish Tea Season!

Scottish Tea, served on the terrace in the period garden, includes freshly baked scones, preserves, whipped cream, oatcakes, and tea, lemonad, or ice tea. Complimentary tours of the 1840s restored stone house are included with the teas.

Hastings Eighth -Annual Medieval Festival

The annual celebration of the Sword happens once again in Hastings on Labour Day weekend.

Watch the Spectacle of the Sword wielded by different Sword fighting groups from across Ontario and Quebec.

Falconers, Musicians, Merchants and Artisans await your presence of this 3 day festival.

Hands on activities call you to participate in: Axe Throwing, Spear Throwing, Archery, and Sword Cutting.

Each sword fighting style takes center stage where they showcase their form of medieval combat.

Each sword fighting group also has a booth set up where their knowledgeable members can converse with you about History, Armour, and/or Weapons

Gauvreau CPA Kickstarts Peterborough Bigs Children With 101 Filled Knapsacks For Back-To-School

The children of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peterborough (Peterborough Bigs) are getting a head start for their classes this September as they were given 101 backpacks filled with school supplies by accounting firm Gauvreau CPA on Friday.

The initiative, ‘Gear Up for Good,’ began last year as 73 backpacks were given to local kids affiliated with Peterborough Bigs. New this year, Gauvreau CPA also included complimentary haircuts.

Local promotional supplier Ricart Branded Apparel and Promo, donated water bottles as part of the fully-loaded backpacks.

“Every child deserves the chance to excel in their education and pursue their dreams,” said Robert Gauvreau, Gauvreau CPA founder. “We are humbled by the support of Ricart and our community and we're determined to make this year's 'Gear Up for Good' campaign even more impactful than before.”

Children and parents picked up the supplies throughout the day and selected their knapsacks on a first-come, first-serve basis.

“Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of these incredible kids,” said Gauvreau. “By joining forces, we're not only equipping them with school supplies but also with the belief that their dreams are worth pursuing.”

4th Line Theatre Presents: The Cavan Blazers

Millbrook’s 4th Line Theatre presents ‘The Cavan Blazers,’ written by Robert Winslow and directed by Kim Blackwell. 

It is a gritty, intense play that has the audience on the edge of its seat from start to finish. This drama chronicles the religious conflict between Catholic and Protestant Irish settlers in Cavan Township in the early to mid-nineteenth century. Violence erupts when a Protestant vigilante gang known as the Cavan Blazers tries to stop a Catholic settlement from being established.

Lang Pioneer Village Corn Roast

Join the harvest season at the Corn Roast at Lang Pioneer Village Museum.

The family-friendly day has historic demonstrations, live music, and plenty of fire-cooked corn. Tour with a free horse-drawn wagon ride and tour the historic village.

The village will teach visitors how corn was used back then with examples such as corn bread, popcorn, dried corn, corn soups, and corn relish in the Fitzpatrick House, and sample some Johnny cake with maple syrup in the Milburn House.

The village will have demonstrations including threshing, bagging, fanning mill and corn grinding.

Traditional music is being performed by Lotus and Luke from the Weaver Shop porch.

A corn-on-the-cob eating contest taking place on the Village Green. Corn crafts and corn hole by the Ayotte Cabin are some activities that will be run.

Tragic Tales – Little Lake Cemetery

On this tour, you will hear about the tragedy of the Turnbull Building collapse and discover details about the 1916 Quaker Fire that you may not know. Additional stories center on the untimely demise of little Freddie McMaster, the amazing life and career of strongman Daniel McDonald, and the burial of Col. Alexander McDonell, a Catholic, who was supposed to be interred outside St. Peters Cemetery but now has a prominent place near the Little Lake Cemetery Chapel.

Alice Teichert’s paintings are known for their holographic depth and unique luminosity, for their visual poetry and multi-faceted proximity to music. In this survey exhibition spanning four decades of practice, Teichert uses line, shape, and colour to push the edges of legibility to open new realms of dialogue.

Multidisciplinary artist Alice Teichert studied music, philosophy, visual poetry, visual arts, and printmaking in Belgium and France. She works from her studio in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. Since 1989, she has built an international career with over 30 solo exhibitions in France, Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Australia. Known for her bold colours and layered transparencies interspersed with script-like line drawings, Teichert’s paintings are noted for their holographic depth. Her works are held in many corporate, private, and public collections including the MacLaren Art Centre, Global Affairs Canada, the Musée de la Ville de Valence (F) and the Museumsquartier of Lübeck (D).

Fifth Annual Lock & Paddle

Parks Canada’s fifth-annual Lock & Paddle event is welcoming back paddlers and spectators at the Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site of Canada this Saturday at 3 p.m.

This year’s theme ‘Lift Your Spirits,’ invites paddlers and attendees to show us what makes them happy! Paddlers get to experience going down the Lift Locks and paddling through the canal. This free all-ages event invites anyone to decorate their vessel, wear a costume or have fun.

To participate, registrants can go apply online.

Beginners or those with accessibility needs can enter the waterway at the Visitor Centre on-site at the event. Canoes can be launched at the following places:

HunTer Fondo

We are excited to invite you to join us for an unforgettable ride in memory of John Hunter, a beloved local cycling enthusiast who passed away in 2021. John was a local legend, known and loved far beyond our community for his dedication to cycling and the Peterborough Cycling Club (PCC). To honour his memory, we’re organizing The HunTer Fondo, an event that aims to bring together 250 local and regional riders for a great cause.

Funds raised from this event will support Peterborough Regional Hospital Centre, Campbellford Memorial Hospital, and Peterborough Cycling Club. We’ve designed three routes for cyclists of all levels: the 40K Trial Heaven Ride, 65K Frappe le Rue and the thrilling 125K “It’s going to be a fun ride.” All rides will start and finish at Ashburnham Memorial Park, followed by a BBQ and social at the Heritage Pavilion at the museum.

The Hunter Fondo’s 2023 support of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation & Campbellford Memorial Hospital (CMH) will help shape the future of cardiac care in our region – expanding cardiac services at PRHC to empower world-class treatment, close to home.

Let’s come together to celebrate John’s legacy and support these important causes. We can’t wait to see you there!

Peterborough Folk Festival

Join us at Nicholls Oval Park for this annual celebration of music, culture and community. Admission to our inclusive and accessible festival is free, with donations encouraged and appreciated. You can donate at the festival to the friendly volunteers in yellow T-shirts, or anytime (with instant tax receipts for donations of $25 and up) via our CanadaHelps page here. Thank you!

With four stages of live music and lots of other activities, the festival has something for everyone. The Artisan Village features local artisan and craft vendors and community organizations. The Children’s Village has activities and children’s performers. Visit the Food Village to sample foods from a variety of local vendors and the Cameron’s Pavilion to wet your whistle while listening to live music on the Pavilion Stage or on the Main Stage.

The festival gets underway both days at 11:00 am with the Children’s Village, Artisan Village, Food Vendors and Cameron’s Pavilion. Live music begins on the Generation Solar Stage and Cameron’s Pavilion Stage at 12 noon.

Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Tim & The Glory Boys

Peterborough Musicfest closes out its 36th summer season welcoming explosive Canadian country/bluegrass band Tim & The Glory Boys to Del Crary Park.

Self-described as “a Canadian gang of backwoods hillbillies with world-class facial hair and infectious on-stage energy,” the two-time Juno Award-winning band, and 2021 CCMA Group of the Year and Rising Star nominees, have toured for a decade, sharing the stage with top country, roots and gospel music acts.

Formed in 2013, the band sees front man Tim Neufeld superbly backed by his Glory Boys brethren, among them Colin Trask (dobro/percussion) and Brenton Thorvaldslon (banjo/guitar).

The band’s debut full-length self-titled album released just past in April features five songs that have already achieved Top 40 country radio status and generated some 30 million streams. When You Know You Know has been certified gold with three other tracks – Me Without You, Without A Prayer and Float – appearing on Top 10 playlists. The band’s latest single release is Take Me Backroad, featuring High Valley.

In April 2023, quilled birch bark makaks made by women of Rice Lake Village (now Hiawatha First Nation) will arrive at the Peterborough Museum & Archives (PMA) for an extended loan visit from the

Royal Collection Trust in England, where they have been cared for since they were given to the young Prince of Wales in 1860. The makaks will be exhibited and will be the focus of activities: workshops on

quillwork, Michi Saagiig Anishnaabemowin, special tours of the exhibit, and some visits in which participants will be able to gently touch them.

Alice Teichert’s paintings are known for their holographic depth and unique luminosity, for their visual poetry and multi-faceted proximity to music. In this survey exhibition spanning four decades of practice, Teichert uses line, shape, and colour to push the edges of legibility to open new realms of dialogue.

Multidisciplinary artist Alice Teichert studied music, philosophy, visual poetry, visual arts, and printmaking in Belgium and France. She works from her studio in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. Since 1989, she has built an international career with over 30 solo exhibitions in France, Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Australia. Known for her bold colours and layered transparencies interspersed with script-like line drawings, Teichert’s paintings are noted for their holographic depth. Her works are held in many corporate, private, and public collections including the MacLaren Art Centre, Global Affairs Canada, the Musée de la Ville de Valence (F) and the Museumsquartier of Lübeck (D).

Peterborough Musicfest Presents: Fandango - ZZ Top Tribute

ZZ Top tribute act Fandango headlines at Del Crary Park.

Formed in the mid 1990s by brothers Geoff and Chris Dahl, joined by drummer Perry Weido, Fandango was originally part of Legends Live, a rock and pop music theatre production that toured North America. That was followed by residencies in Las Vegas and Myrtle Beach.

Now, trademark beards and sunglasses in place, Fandango is back on the circuit, bringing the timeless blues-rock music of “that little band from Texas” to venues, casinos and festivals throughout North America.

Formed in 1969 in Houston, ZZ Top – Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill – released 15 albums and piled up an estimated 50 million record sales, earning the trio induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Notable hits include Tube Snake Boogie, Gimme All Your Lovin’, Sharp Dressed Man and Legs.

GoFundMe Created For Local Teen Struggling With Mental Health To Get Therapy Dog

Local teen Payge Creasy has community support behind her to get a therapy dog for her mental health as donors are contributing to cover the costs in a GoFundMe created last Thursday.

The GoFundMe was created by her aunt Candice Williamson with a goal of $4,500 to pay for the therapy dog named Kyle. He is supposed to help Creasy during her panic attacks and other episodes when she is suffering from her mental health according to the Williamson on the GoFundMe. It continues to say that Creasy has suffered from mental health issues for the past few years including a six-week inpatient stay.

Alternatively, another fundraising effort on Sipology was created by Krystal C Daskewich, another one of Creasey’s aunts, entitled, ‘Paws For Payge.’ Roughly 40 per cent of the proceeds from the tea and tea accessory sales go towards Cresey’s campaign.

The teen was also an entrepreneur, selling handmade bath products with her company ‘Payge’s Paradise’ which began back in April 2019. Her handmade, chemical-free bath products include body butter, body scrubs, shower steamers, bath salts and candles.

Both fundraisers say that only money is holding the teen back from being able to get Kyle and help her cope with her mental health better.

The GoFundMe has already raised $855 of its $4,500 goal since the publication of this article.

PTBOCanada Remembers Staff Member Kim Wilson After Passing Away From Cancer Battle

Beloved by all PTBOCanada staff, past and present, we all say farewell to our bookkeeper Kimberley Jennifer Wilson who passed away on Saturday after a long battle with cancer.

Wilson was diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Colon Cancer. She passed away at the age of 43 at Hospice Peterborough with her family at her side on Saturday.

“Kim Wilson was our bookkeeper at PTBOCanada from the early days and quickly became an integral part of the PTBOCanada family as we built it over the years,” said Neil Morton, PTBOCanada founder. “In fact, she was so important that she stayed on in that role with Kirtus Evoy after he purchased it. She was an unsung hero not only at PTBOCanada but in the community.”

“Kim has been a big part of the PTBOCanada Media Inc. team since we started in March of 2021,” said Kirtus Evoy, PTBOCanada owner. “She was an incredible person and a great team player. She was always there when you needed her for help and advice. She always had her head up with a positive attitude even through her tough days. She will be missed.”

Wilson volunteered a significant amount of time at the Keene United Church and 4-H Canada. She was an avid baker who competed in several local fairs and often made treats for family and friends.

“She championed kindness, empathy, attentiveness and growth. I thoroughly enjoyed our regular conversations over the years not just on business but life, politics, religion and community,” said Morton. “Community, especially her Keene and church were everything to Kim. ‘Kimmer,’ as I called her, battled cancer hard with a terrific, positive mindset to beating it. She always told me right up to the end at Hospice, ‘I want to live.’ She loved life.”

“She began working with the team around the same time I did and made everything easier with her knowledge of bookkeeping,” said Aaron Elliott, PTBOcanada brand strategist director. “Whenever I had a question she was always kind and never minded answering, even when I asked her the same question time and time again. I’ll miss our conversations that happened at work and outside whenever we’d run into each other which happened pretty frequently.”

Wilson’s Celebration of Life is being held at Keene United Church on Sept. 23 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow in the Keene United Church Hall. To honour her memory and love of baking, it is asked that visitors bring their favourite baked goods to be shared at the reception.

“I always enjoyed Kim’s company every time I saw her,” said David Tuan Bui, PTBOCanada editor. “I always joked that she was my favourite person to e-mail me since she was our bookkeeper. Kim was always a treat to be around, especially at company outings. We all had a hushed moment when we discovered her passing and she’s going to be missed by us all.”

Central Smith Creamery Celebrates Success Of 'Moon Mist' Ice Cream With Tie-Dye T-Shirt Community Event

To celebrate the high sales of their latest ice cream flavour, Central Smith Creamery put on a ‘Moon Mist Tie Dye Day’ community spirit event to mark the early success at their Selwyn facility on Friday afternoon.

Central Smith sold out 65 tickets to their event that allowed children and adults to make and take home tie-dye t-shirts in the same colours as their ‘Moon Mist’ ice cream that debuted in March.

It consists of three flavours, banana, blue bubblegum and grape. The flavour is popular in Nova Scotia and Central Smith took a playful approach to introducing Moon Mist into their lineup with their community event.

“This was to have a bit of fun with the character that we created, the little alien,” said Jillian Scates, Central Smith project manager. “We just wanted to bring lots of people to the factory and have some fun.”

Central Smith often holds community events such as ‘Bigfoot Day’ and ice cream socials. They have engaged in philanthropy work, holding food drives for Kawartha Food Share every Christmas and supporting Five Counties Children’s Centre and Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation.

“We love working and hanging out with the community,” said Scates. “We love meeting with lots of people and we're always trying to be community-focused here at Central Smith so we thought a fun event would be good.”
