Peterborough Police Issued 40 Tickets During Distracted Driving Campaign

During the Peterborough Police Service’s “Keep Your Eyes” on the road campaign, they have issued 40 distracted driving tickets during its first week, announced on Tuesday.

The police urge motorists keep roads safe by:

  • Never text while driving

  • Pull over to use your phone

  • Avoid tasks that may take your attention away from driving

The campaign runs through May with traffic and frontline officers conducting speed enforcement and watching for distracted drivers in high traffic volume areas and residential neighbourhoods.

Police Conclude No 'Ill-Intent" From Women Offering Ride to 10-Year-Old From Tuesday

Peterborough Police have determined that no ill-intent came from the woman who offered a ride to a 10-year-old walking to Edmison Edmison Heights Public School from Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the Royal Drive and Marina Boulevard area. 

Officers have been in contact with the driver, the school and the student for the investigation which lead to the no ill-intent conclusion according to a press release.

Suspect Involved In a Carjacking and Robbery at a Peterborough Parking Lot Arrested in Windsor

A man involved in a robbery and carjacking incident in a Peterborough parking lot on Sunday morning was arrested in Windsor on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old is held in custody and will face charges in multiple jurisdictions including the following in Peterborough:

  • Robbery with violence

  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose

  • Assault with a weapon

  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle

  • Flight from peace officer

  • Motor vehicle theft

  • Fail to stop when signaled or requested to do so by a police officer (Highway Traffic Act)

Police Issue Warning After 10-Year-Old While Walking To School Was Approached By Woman Offering Ride

Peterborough Police have issued a warning to the public after an unknown woman offered a ride to a 10-year-old while they were walking to Edmison Heights Public School, reported Tuesday.

The incident occurred at the Royal Drive and Marina Boulevard area. Police received the reported incident at roughly 8:15 a.m.

The child declined the woman’s offer when approached and told an adult of the incident.

The woman in the vehicle was described to police as:

  • White

  • Female

  • Possibly in her 60s

  • Short white/grey hair

The vehicle was described as:

  • A white sedan

Peterborough Police Launching Distracted Driving Campaign For May

Peterborough Police Service has launched a distracted driving campaign to crack down on drivers using their cell phones while driving their vehicles for the month of May, announced on Tuesday morning.

The campaign features traffic and frontline officers conducting speed enforcement while watching for distracted drivers. They are being observed in high-traffic volume areas and residential neighbourhoods.

“We know that traffic collisions cost society more, devastate families and cause more physical injury than all other crimes,” said Staff Sgt. Ryan Wilson, “It’s important for the public to know that officers are committed to ensuring our roads are as safe as possible.”

Residents can also report driving complaints through the Peterborough Police Service online reporting portal.

Peterborough Police Searching For Suspect And Stolen Vehicle From Sunday Carjacking

Peterborough Police Service are searching for a vehicle from a robbery and carjacking at the FreshCo Lansdowne Street parking lot on Sunday morning.

At roughly 7:45 a.m, officers were called to a parking lot after a woman reported her vehicle was stolen from her at knifepoint. Medical attention was not required for the victim.

Officers spotted the vehicle on The Parkway and pursued it onto Highway 115. The vehicle exited the highway and continued north on Highway 7. The police could not safely deploy a spike belt before the vehicle turned onto Lansdowne Street while speeding and headed back toward Peterborough. Police eventually called off the pursuit for safety reasons. 

Through investigation, police identified a pickup truck the suspect had exited in the parking lot and learned that it was reported stolen in Kingston on Saturday evening.

The suspect is described as:

  • White male

  • 20-30 years old

  • 200+ lbs.

  • 5’9” to 5’11”

  • Balding, light brown, short  

  • Unshaven

  • Wearing: large white t-shirt, dark pants

The vehicle is described to police as:

  • 2010 Toyota Corolla

  • Black

  • Four-Door

  • BNEJ 017

Two Men Arrested On Drug and Firearm Charges

A 28-year-old Peterborough man and a 29-year-old Ajax man are facing drug and firearm charges after a loaded handgun and drugs were seized announced by the Peterborough Police Service on Friday.

On Thursday, officers with the Peterborough Police Drug Unit arrested both men. One during a traffic stop near Ravenwood Drive and Melody Crescent and the other during a search warrant at a residence in the Louden Terrace and Avery Avenue area. 

The officers found the follow within the residence:

  • Loaded handgun

  • 133.2 g Cocaine

  • 1.6 g Fentanyl

  • $2,970 (Canadian currency)

  • Weigh scales

  • Vacuum packaging

  • Multiple cellphones

The 28-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm

  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000 - in Canada

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine

  • Poss of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - Fentanyl

He is held in custody and will appear in court on Friday.

The 29-year-old Ajax man was arrested and charged with:

  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm

  • Possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm

  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000 - in Canada

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Fentanyl

  • Four counts of failing to comply with release order

He is currently bound by a recognizance of bail with the following conditions to not possess any unlawful substances, drug paraphernalia, weapons or more than one cellphone.

He is being held in custody and will appear in court on Friday.

Peterborough Police Searching For Missing 14-Year-Old Girl Last Seen In Home Backyard

UPDATE: 2:21 p.m. 11/04/23

Peterborough Police Service has found 14-year-old Peterborough girl Tehya Tirone 40 minutes after being declared missing and vulnerable announced on Tuesday afternoon.

She was last seen in the backyard of her Bolivar Street home near Monaghan Road on Tuesday morning around 11:10 a.m.

Peterborough Police Recover U-Haul Van Used In Break and Enter; Suspect Remains At Large

Peterborough Police Service has recovered the U-Haul vehicle in connection with a break-and-enter early Tuesday morning.

A citizen noticed the van in the Bethune Street and Dublin Street area and informed the police.

The suspect has not been located as the investigation is ongoing according to the police.

At roughly 1 a.m., officers were reported a break-and-enter in the Parkhill Road East and Auburn Street area. Officers discovered that someone had entered the store, taken a few items and left in a U-Haul vehicle.

The suspect was described to police as:

  • Male

  • Thin build 

  • Unshaven 

  • Black jacket

  • Light coloured hood

  • Dark grey track pants 

  • White shoes with a red diamond pattern on the back heels
