Newcastle Man Arrested After Drug Prescription Fraud At Pharmacy

A 41-year-old Newcastle man is facing charges including fraud and drug possession after an incident at a pharmacy on Thursday evening.

At roughly 7:30 p.m., officers were called to a pharmacy about a man attempting to pick up a fraudulent prescription. They learned that the prescription had been used several times since August. They located the man inside the store and took him into custody.

During a search after arrest, officers seized:

  • 2.6grams of Methamphetamine

  • Two knives

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Use, deals, acts on forged document

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Methamphetamine

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 11.

Peterborough Police Issue Warnings After Receiving Multiple Grandparent Scam Reports

A warning from the Peterborough Police Service after several Grandparent Scams were reported.

Officers received two calls for service from seniors reporting they had just received an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be a family member who was in trouble with the law and required money to be released. No money was lost and in both cases, it was recognized as a scam. 

Peterborough Police remind residents to be hyper-vigilant about unsolicited phone calls, texts or communications.  

If you receive such a call, remember:

  • Law enforcement agencies will never ask you for money or cryptocurrency

  • Resist the urgency

  • Talk to a trusted person about what is going on

  • Do not respond to requests for personal information such as banking info, passwords or your SIN number

If no money is lost, please report the call to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.  If you are a victim of a scam, please call your local police service.  Peterborough Police Service can be reached through the non-emergency line at 705-876-1122 x225.  Frauds can also be reported online.

Police Lay Careless Driving Charge After Flipping Car From Hitting Two Parked Vehicles

A 20-year-old driver is facing a careless driving charge after a collision involving two parked vehicles on Tuesday morning.

At roughly 10 a.m., officers were called to the area of Monaghan Road and Cameron Street. A vehicle had collided with two parked cars before flipping. The driver was not injured and there were no people in the parked vehicles.

The driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:

  • Careless driving

Selwyn Man Charged With Stunt Driving Going 57 Km/H Over the Limit

A 29-year-old Selwyn Township man is facing stunt and speeding charges after a traffic stop Thursday night, during which he was going 57 km/h over the limit.

At roughly 9:20 p.m., a member of the Traffic Services Unit on general patrol in the area of Kawartha Heights Boulevard and Brealey Drive saw a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. A radar was used, recording a speed of 97km/hr in a posted 40km/hr zone. 

As a result, the driver was charged with:

  • Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt

  • Speeding 97km/hr in a posted 40km/hr zone

  • Fail to surrender driver's license 

The driver was served an automatic 30-day license suspension and the vehicle has been impounded for 14 days.

Peterborough Woman Charged With Several Violations While Operating Low-Speed Vehicle

A 27-year-old Peterborough woman is facing several charges under the Highway Traffic Act for operating a low-speed vehicle on Wednesday.

At roughly 10:05 a.m., an officer on general patrol conducted a traffic stop of a low-speed vehicle in the area of Hunter Street and Rubidge Street.

The woman was charged with:

  • Drive low-speed vehicle on Highway of Municipality not in accordance with regulation

  • Drive low-speed vehicle no slow-moving vehicle sign

  • Owner operate low-speed vehicle on Highway no insurance

  • Drive low-speed vehicle on Highway without warning label that states maximum speed

  • Drive low-speed vehicle no license

The driver was given a court date of July 13.

Peterborough Police remind the public that these vehicles are not permitted on any highway, roadway, or sidewalk in the City of Peterborough, Village of Lakefield or Cavan Monaghan Township.

Peterborough Man Wanted On Warrants Arrested With Several Drug Charges

A 51-year-old Peterborough man wanted on a warrant is facing several drug charges after he was spotted in Peterborough on Friday afternoon.

At roughly 3:15 pm, officers with the Peterborough Police Service Drug Unit spotted the man and took him into custody in the Hunter Street and Bethune Street area.

During a search after arrest, officers seized and located:

  • 6.8 grams of Methamphetamine 

  • 68.1 grams of Cocaine 

  • 29.8 grams of Fentanyl 

  • Canadian currency

  • Drug paraphernalia

The man was arrested on the strength of the warrants for failing to comply with probation and further charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - Methamphetamine

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking- Other Drugs

  • Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine

  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000 - in Canada

  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused was held in custody and appeared in Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) court on Saturday.

Two People Charged After Committing Sexual Acts On a Bench

Two people are facing charges, including performing an indecent act on a bench, on Sunday afternoon.

At roughly 5:30 p.m., officers were called to the trail near Sherbrooke Street and Water Street. Officers learned that two people had been spotted committing a sexual act on a bench while a family and other pedestrians were in the area. They located two people matching the description given to the police in the area and took them into custody.

As a result of the investigation:

A 31-year-old Peterborough man was arrested and charged with:

  • Indecent act - public place

  • Being intoxicated in a public place (Liquor License Control Act)

A 43-year-old Peterborough woman was arrested and charged with:

  • Indecent act - public place

  • Fail to comply with Probation Order X2

The accused is currently bound by two probation orders with the following condition: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

Both accused were released on an undertaking with conditions and are scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 4.

Peterborough Man Arrested For Armed Robbery After Brandishing a Knife at a Victim Walking Near Train Tracks

A 35-year-old Peterborough man is facing an armed robbery charge after an incident near train tracks on Thursday evening.

At roughly 10 a.m., a passerby flagged down an officer to report an incident. The officer learned that the man had been walking near the train tracks between Aylmer Street and George Street North when he was approached by another man who brandished a knife at him and demanded his belongings.

The victim handed over several items and then took off. Officers were able to locate a suspect matching the description given to police and he was taken into custody.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Armed robbery

The accused is being held in custody and will appear in court on Friday.

Warsaw Man Arrested For Impaired Driving After Caught Revving Engine At Armour Hill

A 22-year-old Warsaw man is facing multiple charges, including impaired driving, after an incident at Armour Hill in Peterborough early Sunday morning.

At roughly 3:30 a.m., officers were called to Armour Hill about cars backfiring and revving their engines. They spotted two vehicles and while speaking to the driver of one of them, officers noticed signs of impairment.

The man was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

  • Having care or control of a motor vehicle with open container of liquor (Liquor License Control Act)

  • Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available (Cannabis Control Act)

The accused was issued an automatic 90-day license suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment.

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on June 16.

Three Bonnerworth Park Pickleball Courts Closed Due to Vandalism

Three pickleball courts at Bonnerworth Park, including one accessible court, will not open as scheduled on Friday due to vandalism in the park.

According to the City, earlier this week, rocks and high-visibility paint-filled balloons were thrown over the fence surrounding the pickleball courts at the park, resulting in damage to the playing surfaces on three of the 14 courts. 

The City cannot provide an estimate of repair costs or the duration of closures at this time.

The vandalism has been reported to Peterborough Police Service. Anyone with information is asked to call them at 705-876-1122 x555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.

The remaining pickleball courts at Bonnerworth Park are scheduled to open on Friday.
