Peterborough Police Investigate Vehicle Collision After It Left the Road and Injured a Pedestrian

The Peterborough Police Service Traffic Unit is investigating an incident in which a vehicle left the road and struck a pedestrian in the area of Charlotte Street and Reid Street on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred at roughly 3:45 p.m., when a 43-year-old pedestrian was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre for treatment of several injuries. The 78-year-old driver was not injured.

The road was closed for several hours while the Traffic Unit reconstructed the scene of the collision. The investigation is continuing at publication of this article.

Peterborough Woman Arrested For Public Intoxication and Spitting On Several People

A 35-year-old Peterborough woman is facing several charges, including public intoxication and spitting on multiple people, after an incident at Millennium Park on Tuesday night.

At roughly 9:30 p.m., officers were called to the park about a woman yelling and spitting on another woman. They located a woman matching the description given to the police, took her into custody and the suspect spat at the officer.

The woman was arrested and charged with:

• Assault

• Assault a Peace Officer

• Breach of Recognizance

• Being intoxicated in public place (Liquor Licence Control Act)

The accused is currently bound by a recognizance with the following condition: to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

They are being held in custody and appeared in court on Wednesday.

Peterborough Man Charged With Assault After Throwing Rock at Residents On Their Property

A 21-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges, including assault, after an incident involving the suspect throwing a rock at residents on Monday afternoon.

At roughly 3 p.m., officers were made aware of an unwanted person on a property in the Hunter Street and Bethune Street area. They learned that the person was not to have any contact with the residents and that when they tried to chase him off, the suspect threw a rock at them before fleeing the area.

Officers located a man matching the description given to police in the George Street and Simcoe Street area a short time later and took him into custody.

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Assault with A Weapon

• Failure to comply with undertaking

The accused is currently bound by an undertaking to stay away from the residence as well as the people who live there.

They are being held in custody and appeared in court on Tuesday.

Residents Encouraged to Verify Unexpected Requests for Home Access or Payment

Residents are being advised to exercise caution following reports of unsolicited phone calls and door-to-door visits from individuals claiming to represent Water Services or the City of Peterborough.

According to a press release, City staff do not proactively contact residents to request unscheduled access to a home for water heater inspections. Staff attend a property only when service has been requested by the resident, when an appointment has been arranged in advance or when a notice has been provided for related work. 

The City says it has also received a report of individuals going door to door, claiming to collect payment for overdue accounts. City staff do not collect payments for overdue water accounts at residents’ homes. 

For your protection, residents should not provide access to their home, personal information, banking information, credit card information or payment to anyone making an unsolicited request. Residents should also be cautious of anyone demanding immediate action, payment or access to their home. 

Anyone who receives an unexpected call or visit claiming to be from the City should verify the request by calling 705-742-7777 using publicly available contact information before taking any action. 

Residents who believe they may have been targeted by fraud or who have shared personal or financial information should contact the police and their financial institution.

Newcastle Man Arrested After Drug Prescription Fraud At Pharmacy

A 41-year-old Newcastle man is facing charges including fraud and drug possession after an incident at a pharmacy on Thursday evening.

At roughly 7:30 p.m., officers were called to a pharmacy about a man attempting to pick up a fraudulent prescription. They learned that the prescription had been used several times since August. They located the man inside the store and took him into custody.

During a search after arrest, officers seized:

• 2.6grams of Methamphetamine

• Two knives

The man was arrested and charged with:

• Use, deals, acts on forged document

• Possession of a Schedule I Substance - Methamphetamine

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 11.

Peterborough Police Issue Warnings After Receiving Multiple Grandparent Scam Reports

A warning from the Peterborough Police Service after several Grandparent Scams were reported.

Officers received two calls for service from seniors reporting they had just received an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be a family member who was in trouble with the law and required money to be released. No money was lost and in both cases, it was recognized as a scam. 

Peterborough Police remind residents to be hyper-vigilant about unsolicited phone calls, texts or communications.  

If you receive such a call, remember:

• Law enforcement agencies will never ask you for money or cryptocurrency

• Resist the urgency

• Talk to a trusted person about what is going on

• Do not respond to requests for personal information such as banking info, passwords or your SIN number

Police Lay Careless Driving Charge After Flipping Car From Hitting Two Parked Vehicles

A 20-year-old driver is facing a careless driving charge after a collision involving two parked vehicles on Tuesday morning.

At roughly 10 a.m., officers were called to the area of Monaghan Road and Cameron Street. A vehicle had collided with two parked cars before flipping. The driver was not injured and there were no people in the parked vehicles.

Selwyn Man Charged With Stunt Driving Going 57 Km/H Over the Limit

A 29-year-old Selwyn Township man is facing stunt and speeding charges after a traffic stop Thursday night, during which he was going 57 km/h over the limit.

At roughly 9:20 p.m., a member of the Traffic Services Unit on general patrol in the area of Kawartha Heights Boulevard and Brealey Drive saw a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. A radar was used, recording a speed of 97km/hr in a posted 40km/hr zone. 

As a result, the driver was charged with:

• Drive motor vehicle - perform stunt

• Speeding 97km/hr in a posted 40km/hr zone

• Fail to surrender driver's license 

The driver was served an automatic 30-day license suspension and the vehicle has been impounded for 14 days.

Peterborough Woman Charged With Several Violations While Operating Low-Speed Vehicle

A 27-year-old Peterborough woman is facing several charges under the Highway Traffic Act for operating a low-speed vehicle on Wednesday.

At roughly 10:05 a.m., an officer on general patrol conducted a traffic stop of a low-speed vehicle in the area of Hunter Street and Rubidge Street.

The woman was charged with:

• Drive low-speed vehicle on Highway of Municipality not in accordance with regulation

• Drive low-speed vehicle no slow-moving vehicle sign

• Owner operate low-speed vehicle on Highway no insurance

• Drive low-speed vehicle on Highway without warning label that states maximum speed

• Drive low-speed vehicle no license

The driver was given a court date of July 13.

Peterborough Police remind the public that these vehicles are not permitted on any highway, roadway, or sidewalk in the City of Peterborough, Village of Lakefield or Cavan Monaghan Township.

Peterborough Man Wanted On Warrants Arrested With Several Drug Charges

A 51-year-old Peterborough man wanted on a warrant is facing several drug charges after he was spotted in Peterborough on Friday afternoon.

At roughly 3:15 pm, officers with the Peterborough Police Service Drug Unit spotted the man and took him into custody in the Hunter Street and Bethune Street area.

During a search after arrest, officers seized and located:

• 6.8 grams of Methamphetamine 

• 68.1 grams of Cocaine 

• 29.8 grams of Fentanyl 

• Canadian currency

• Drug paraphernalia

The man was arrested on the strength of the warrants for failing to comply with probation and further charged with:

• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking - Methamphetamine

• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking- Other Drugs

• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine

• Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000 - in Canada

• Fail to Comply with Probation Order

The accused was held in custody and appeared in Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) court on Saturday.
