The Cavan Blazers are Back at 4th Line Theatre

After a seven year hiatus, Robert Winslow's production of The Cavan Blazers is back at 4th Line Theatre from August 2nd through 27th. The play is about the gritty religious conflict between the Catholic and Protestant settlers in Cavan Township during the 1800s. The Cavan Blazers were a Protestant vigilante gang that tried to stop Catholic settlements and even went as far as burning down their farms.

The play features Richard Greenblatt (who starred in the Mirvish Production of 2 Pianos, 4 Hands) as Justice of the Peace and Edward Belanger (who starred in the Mirvish production of Mama Mia!) as the leader of the Blazers. Director Robert Winslow will be reprising his original role of Father Phelan from the 1992 production.

Tickets are $40 for the Gala Opening, $30 for Adults, $26 for Youth (ages 5-16) and the August 6th 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner PLUS Opening Night & Reception is $150.

Spotlight: EPIC Ventures Winner Shish Kabob Hut (Which Will Appear On Food Network's "You Gotta Eat Here!")

In May, the GPA EDC launched a new program entitled EPIC Ventures to recognize entrepeneurs in our local community. The winner each month will be chosen from your votes by visiting the Business Advisory Centre by the 20th of each month.

We recently had a chance to sit down with Don Vassiliadis, owner of Shish Kabob Hut, and the first winner of the EPIC Ventures program. Vassiliadis, a second generation owner of the restaurant, talked to us about how the business has flourished over the years and opportunities yet to come. The Shish Kabob Hut opened back in 1976 at the corner of Parkhill and Water, and several years later they moved to their current location at 220 King Street. They are thrilled to be celebrating their 35th year in business this year, and have branched into both a catering and party rentals business—making them an all inclusive establishment for any of your dining needs.

An active member in the community, Vassiliadis takes every opportunity to have his restaurant participate in local events happening in the area. You may have spotted him recently at the DBIA's Ribfest and Fiesta Buckhorn. An upcoming event he has Shish Kabob Hut participating in is the 100 Mile Dinner presented by the Peterborough Agricultural Society (August 7th at 6 p.m.), which will have local food and area chefs preparing the meal. Tickets can be purchased for $30 from Don at the restaurant, as he is helping co-ordinate the event along with Rural Routes, the Peterborough Farmers' Market and the GPA EDC office.

Also, stay tuned in the Fall when Shish Kabob Hut will be featured on The Food Network's new show, You Gotta Eat Here!. (Peterborough's Reggie's will also be featured on an upcoming show.)

Shish Kabob Hours: Monday - Closed, Tuesday/Wednesday 11:30 a.m. - 8 p.m., Thursday/Friday 11:30 a.m. - 9 p.m., Saturday 4 p.m. - 9 p.m., Sunday - Closed. Click here to view menu, take-out is also available.

Police Warn Of Tainted Cocaine In Peterborough

From a Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service Media Release today...

Police have been contacted by Community Agencies in the City as well as sources that are involved in the use of cocaine or close to people using cocaine. Police are being told that at least 8 persons have become ill in the past few weeks after using cocaine and there is a possibility that two persons have succumbed to the illness. At this time Police have not been able to confirm a link between cocaine purchased in our area and the illness but we are concerned and if there is a link established any media release will likely come from our partners at the Public Health Unit. They are aware of our concerns and are doing an investigation into this. In the meantime anyone involved in the use of cocaine in any form needs to be aware of this information and take the proper action. It should be noted that we have seen Levamisole in cocaine in Peterborough in the past. The concern with this common cutting agent is that it can suppress the immune system and in that case people can become very sick from various infections there bodies cannot fight. Levamisole is used by veteranarians as a dewormer and we are not sure at this time the exact reason Traffickers of cocaine use it as a cutting agent. We have received information on people who are involved in trafficking tainted cocaine and have made a recent arrest. The cocaine seized is being taken to Health Canada in order to be tested for any harmful additives.
