The Story Of Buddybear Who Was Adopted From Peterborough Humane Society

Buddybear

We asked for your Humane Society adoption stories and here's another great one we received from pet owner Krystal Laffin...

------------

We adopted our dog, Buddybear, from the Peterborough Humane Society in October 2011. We were looking to rescue a dog in need and when we first went to take a look at dogs, we met Buddybear. We went to walk him and he was so scared and shy in the kennel.

Once on the leash and outside, he was happier but still nervous around us. We had then wanted to go home and talk about him. We went home for maybe an hour and realized he was the dog for us! We went back right then and took him home! He even remembered us, as he pulled the leash when the staff went back to gather his things for us.

He looked pretty rough because he went in as a stray; he had been rescued from under a transport truck. All the staff who saved him that day still talk about it when we bring him for a visit, and we always hear how much healthier he looks! He is soon to be 8 and is in great shape—and this older dog was the best choice for us as he was house trained and he has great manners!

We can't thank the Peterborough Humane Society enough! We have decided to dedicate our wedding this July to them by asking our guests to bring donations for them. This is one of our ways to say thank you for saving Buddybear and allowing him to enter our lives and make us happier than we have ever been!

He is as spoiled as ever and it's a rewarding thing to give an animal in need a home, especially older ones who sometimes get overlooked!

The Amazing Story Of Layla Who Was Adopted From Peterborough Humane Society

Layla

We asked for your Humane Society adoption stories and here's a great one we received from pet owner Jessica Bushey...

-------------

In the fall of 2005, I went on a mission to find a dog to adopt from the Peterborough Humane Society. I chose the Humane Society because I wanted to help out an animal in need, and because the Humane Society has helped me on several occasions. I've had their assistance with lost dogs, dogs left in cars—even when I accidentally hit a cat, they came and gave the cat medical care and provided me with updates until the cat got adopted.

When I arrived at the Humane Society, I looked at all the dogs, wanting to take them all home. I did, however, fall in love with one in particular. She was a stray and had just been brought in. I was not able to adopt her right away as they had to check her over and try to find her owner. I went every day to visit and walk her, knowing that she may have a family looking for her. On the third day, I got a phone call from the Humane Society telling me to come in. They told me I could take her home early since she was so scared being there (the noise of the other dogs barking).

She literally crawled out of the building, but once we were outside she stood up and her tail started to wag. I knew instantly I had done the right thing.

I've had Layla for eight years, and am blessed that I found such a wonderful dog. She works as a therapy dog for the people I support, and is sometimes known as "Liftlock Layla" because she also works at the Liftlock golf course chasing the geese off the course for the golfers.

She's not only touched my life, but many lives. And I have the Peterborough Humane Society to thank for their support through the adoption process and their compassion for keeping animals like Layla safe until they find their forever home.

DBIA Featured Post: Natas Café

If you’re looking for a downtown cafe that feels like home, you need look no further than Natas Café (376 George St. N.). Owned and operated by Steve and Delia Francis, who moved here six years ago from Toronto, the café has a Portuguese overtone not found anywhere in the area.

Natas offers various coffees, quick eats, splendid desserts and what they are told are the best cups of Cappuccino and Espresso in the downtown area! They make most things in house, and when they need to source out, they use local connections as much as possible to support others within the community.

A goal of Natas is to create an atmosphere that is as welcoming as possible. They want their customers to try something once and always want to come back. Once you step inside its doors, you can tell that it is a meeting place for people from all walks of life in the community. From students meeting for study sessions, to moms with strollers, to creative and business types having brainstorm meetings, Natas attracts a great variety and demographic of happy customers!

Upon entering the café, you will notice a wall on the left filled with art work. This wall was dedicated to the PCVS students who once filled the café. Now the wall is dedicated to TAS, where many former PCVS students roam the halls.

Natas has been a proud supporter of many local events such as the always successful Taste of Downtown and the United Way fundraiser, which takes place in July. Also, purchasing a gift certificate from Natas is a great gift idea.

Natas is one of the most welcoming atmospheres you will encounter in our great downtown core. With a selection of food and drink that is second to none, it is a café that has to be experienced!

PTBO Pics & Coverage: The Peterborough Mustang Drive-In Is No More?

Last weekend (Victoria Day weekend) usually marks the opening weekend for the Mustang Drive-In. Checking the website left us with unanswered questions as there was no sign of what was to come for their 2013 season. After calling the hotline phone number, we were left stumped when it was no longer in service. According to The Starlite, it is apparently closed for this year. Sad news for outdoor movie theatre fans who love to watch movies under the stars. Hopefully it will open up again next year.

City Drafts 10 Year Housing & Homelessness Plan, Asks For Public Input

From a City release today...

The City of Peterborough is releasing a draft 10-year Housing and Homelessness Plan for public input. The vision of this draft plan emphasizes eliminating long-term homelessness and ensuring quality housing that all residents can afford. It proposes commitments to action that will shape housing and homelessness activities over the next ten years in the City and County of Peterborough.

City, County and township staff have been working with Tim Welch Consulting and Public Interest to develop this draft 10-year Housing and Homelessness Plan since fall of 2012. It will be presented to the City of Peterborough Committee of the Whole on June 3, 2013 and to Peterborough County Council on June 5, 2013.

“This is a plan for housing and homeless services that builds on the strengths and successes of this community. The input and valuable insight of interested community members are key to finalizing this draft plan” remarked Malcolm Hunt, Director of Planning and Development Services.

A Community Forum to discuss the draft 10-year Housing and Homelessness Plan will take place on Thursday, June 6, 2013. This session will be held at George Street United Church, 534 George Street North, Peterborough, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This is an opportunity for the community to provide feedback on the draft plan and insight into their role when the completed plan launches in 2014.

This information is also available on the City of Peterborough website at Peterborough.ca.

OPP Issue Release On What You Can Do To Avoid Problems With Bears

From an OPP release today...

Due to the recent warm weather, officers from Peterborough County OPP have had to respond to several incidents involving humans and bears throughout the County of Peterborough.
.
As homes, cottages and campgrounds encroach further into the wild, the number of incidents involving people and wild animals, especially bears will continue to increase.

Bears forage for food primarily by using their keen sense of smell and they will investigate that smell even if it is coming from your home, cottage or camp.

The problems between black bears and humans occur when the animals are attracted to the smell of an easy meal of pet food, bird seed or garbage. As long as the smell of that food source continues to be available, they will return.

What you can do to avoid problems with bears:

    • Fill bird feeders only during the late fall and winter months then store them in the spring and summer.

    • Put garbage in containers with tight fitting lids and only put it out on garbage days, not the night before.

    • Store garbage containers in bear resistant bins, sheds or garages but do not store outside in plywood boxes, old freezers or vehicles.

    • Do not stockpile garbage, take it to the dump frequently

    • Never leave garbage behind. If you must leave before garbage day or if you do not have pick-up, take your garbage with you when you go. Take it to the dump or local transfer station.

    • Keep meat scraps in the freezer until garbage day

    • Do not leave pet food outdoors. Feed pets indoors, not outside or in screened in areas or porches.

    • Remove grease and food residue from barbeque grills after each use and don’t forget to clean out the grease cup underneath the grill.

    • Do not put meat, fish or sweet food (including fruit) in your composter

    • Pick all ripe fruit off trees and remove vegetables and fallen fruit from the ground

    • NEVER PURPOSELY FEED BEARS (or other wildlife) OR TRY TO APPROACH THEM!

Remember, you are responsible for your own personal safety. Take precautions when you are outdoors.
