Maryam Monsef Enters Mayoral Race In Peterborough

Maryam Monsef has announced she is entering the race as candidate for the next Mayor of Peterborough.

"I believe Peterborough has what it takes to become a world-class city," says Monsef in a media release. "Despite our many gifts and successes, we are not there yet. To be a world-class city we need a better, more sustainable economy. We need neighbourhoods filled with people who have a great sense of community and belonging. I'm ready to lead."

Monsef grew up in Peterborough. She attended Grove and James Strath Public Schools before attending PCVS. She is a proud graduate of Trent University.

"I was raised by a single mother who left the uncertainty of life in Afghanistan so that her daughters could eventually become full and contributing members of society," says Monsef. "Two decades later, I stand here proud to be a product of everything Peterborough does best. The people of Peterborough saved my life. It's time for me to give back."

"My successes are rooted in my belief that dialogue, collaboration and creativity are cornerstones of effective leadership," says Monsef. "I will do the job in a way that will make this community proud."

The slogan for her campaign—which is being run by Jonathan Bennett—is: LISTEN. LEAD. THRIVE. Of note, Monsef is Co-founder of the Red Pashmina Campaign, recipient of the YMCA's Peace Medallion in 2013, represented Peterborough at the United Nations for the Commission on the Status of Women in 2013, and is an eperienced local board member. She was also on Peterborough This Week's list of Peterborough's 20 most influential people in 2013.

PTBOCanada Featured Post: A Look At Premiere Studio Of Dance

With the end of the summer upon us, parents and kids alike are in scramble mode. Gone are the leisurely days, replaced by hectic school schedules and after school activities.

This has many parents looking to get their children involved in something each season to keep them engaged and active. If you’re searching for something new to get your children into, look no further than Premiere Studio of Dance and all it has to offer!

Located at 1046 County Road 19, on the outskirts of Peterborough, the studio offers three beautifully renovated studios with professionally sprung hardwood floors and mirrors to fully enhance your child’s experience.

Opened originally in 2000 by Robyn Carter who is the head instructor, Premiere Studio of Dance is celebrating its 15th and most exciting season yet!

Easily the city’s largest and most prestigious dance school, it is now home to 10 fully certified B.A.T.D. instructors (British Association of Teachers of Dancing) who are continuously learning and updating their qualifications as well.

Offering classes for all ages (toddlers to adults) and skill levels (beginner to competitive), this season Premiere Studio of Dance is offering more classes than ever. The classes you’ll find are:

• Ballet
• Tap
• Hip hop
• Jazz
• Acro
• Modern
• Contemporary
• Musical theatre/Broadway

Whether they are a beginner student who simply wants to have fun and stay active, or a seasoned veteran who is looking to hone their skills and further a future career, each pupil's needs are catered to in order to create an unforgettable experience.

With a proven record of success, Premiere Studio of Dance is second to none. Dancers from the program have gone on to do some pretty incredible things, including being accepted into elite post-secondary arts schools, winning prestigious competitions at high levels, teaching and choreographing as a career, and even going on to a career as a professional dancer!

If a dancer is looking for more of a challenge, Premiere offers a competitive dance program which is the strongest in Eastern Ontario.

The competitive team offers 2 levels based on the amount of classes offered each week. Dancers can participate by taking as few as 3 classes per week.

Competitive dance classes can be quite demanding, but in the end are incredibly rewarding for both the student and parents alike!

At the season's end, there is a final recital which is a celebration of all things learned throughout the year. Each student receives a progress report with important feedback to aid in their growth as a dancer.

A Peterborough Man Did An Awesome Breaking Bad Style ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

By now, if you don't know what the ALS ice bucket challenge is, you've been living under a rock. And if you've never heard of Breaking Bad and Walter White's shenanigans, you're in a very small minority. Peterborough's Miles Gibney, a part time radio news anchor in town, took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and combined it with a Breaking Bad theme to create one of the coolest videos we've seen during this fundraising craze. Watch for yourself... —Aaron Elliott

Here Are The Engineers & Designers Behind The Lift Lock & Trent Canal

Ever wondered who designed and oversaw construction of the Trent Canal and Lift Lock? Well Trent Valley Archives tell us it was Peterborough's Richard Birdsall Rogers—aka R.B. Rogers—a civil and mechanical engineer from Peterborough who studied at McGill.

In preparation for such an enormous undertaking, Rogers actually went to France, Belgium and England to study other (smaller) lift locks around the world. The whole canal project took many years—the Lift Lock itself was begun in 1896 and completed in 1904—and Rogers was the superintendant for most of the work. The lock officially opened to the public to a huge crowd in July 1904. Here are pictures below...

On Sunday night (August 24th), a group of people in Peterborough did something beautiful. Friends and family of the late Tara Dawn Jacobs—who passed away suddenly and far too young last Monday—got together in a celebration of life for her. Hosted at Spanky’s on Hunter Street, her friends and family rallied together to help raise money for Tara’s two young daughters, Janelle and Jazlyn. Spanky's had a BBQ, raffle table and a silent auction, and have so far raised almost $7,000. To cap off the night, they celebrated with a paper lantern send-off on Hunter St. which was incredible to witness as you can see in the pictures and video below. Those who helped organize the event were truly in awe and inspired by the sense of love and community they felt. If you are interested in donating, email Meg Fitzpatrick here for info.
