Recycle This Post: This Is A Reusable Exchange Weekend

Peterborough, this is your last chance this year to participate in a Reusable Exchange Weekend this weekend.

These events are the perfect opportunity to pass along items you no longer want, and give them to someone who can use them—all for free.

From today (September 5th) to Sunday, September 7th, place reusable items at the curb on Friday evening of the event weekend. If items have not been taken by Sunday at 7:00 p.m., bring them back in.

PTBOCanada Featured Post: The Amazing SaveOnEnergy Home Assistance Program

When it comes to energy bills, absolutely no one likes to pay more than they have to. Unplugging appliances, lowering or raising the temperature depending on the season, and even turning off the lights are all small tricks that can definitely help in both the short and longterm.

But when it comes to really making a change, sometimes the initial investment of buying Energy Efficient products like fridges and stoves can be quite costly. To provide MAJOR assistance with this, Peterborough Distribution Inc. (with assistance from GreenUP) is running a program funded by the Ontario Power Authority to help make a change in the way we consume energy, by helping us use less!

The SaveOnEnergy Home Assistance Program is designed to help “Income Qualified Participants” such as students, seniors and lower income families to reduce their electricity bill so that their expenses are more manageable. As much as some of these potentially eligible people would love to save money on utilities, the upgrade costs can sometimes be too much to take on. This program is here to help out bigtime with those upgrade costs.

Getting started is quite simple. Peter Goering from GreenUP is a Certified Energy Advisor and can be reached at 705.745.3238, ext. 200. He will determine whether or not you qualify and then arrange to do an initial assessment of your home providing low wattage light bulbs where possible and determine if any of four eligible appliances (refrigerator, window A/C, chest freezer and dehumidifier) exceed established thresholds and criteria. Then he will let you know if you are eligible to receive any appliance upgrades.

Peter also lets you know approximately how much electricity is being wasted with your current devices—which can be quite an education in itself. The entire audit/assessment, including eligible appliance upgrades, is completely free of charge!

Funding for the program is set to finish at the end of 2014 so time is of the essence! Ontario, as a whole, needs to reduce its electricity consumption. This is due to both aging infrastructure and increasing awareness around global warming and other environmental issues. This program is part of the Ministry of Energy's goal to create a “culture of conservation”. The Ministry estimates that with every $1 invested in energy efficiency, the province avoids paying $2 in costs to the electricity system in the end.

The benefits to taking part in the program seem quite obvious: updated, ENERGY Star appliances and reduced energy bills for starters. Another huge benefit is that energy conservation helps eliminate greenhouse gases and have a healthier environment. Best of all, the program is completely FREE to participate in!

Your only investment is time (you have to actually be there when they assess and install!). As mentioned, the program is open to “Income Qualified Participants” students, seniors, and low income families. The income cutoffs are listed on GreenUP's website, and it does depend on the number of adults living in the household. For specific details and to find out if you are eligible, click here!

For eligibility details and more info, go to Greenup.on.ca or call Peter Goering from GreenUP at 705.745.3238, ext. 200

19 Essential Back To School Safety Tips For Kids, Parents & Motorists

With school starting up, Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Services encourage families to go over the following checklist to ensure everyone has a safe year...

FOR PARENTS & KIDS...

1. Plan a walking route to school or the bus stop: Choose the most direct route with the fewest street crossings and if possible, with intersections that have crossing guards.

2. Walk the route with your child beforehand: Tell him or her to stay away from parks, vacant lots and other places where there aren’t that many people around.

3. Practice, practice, practice: Kids needs to be shown, not just told, how to cross the road safely. Start practicing now how to cross the road safely.

4. Arrange for your child to have walking buddies: If possible, don’t let kids walk to school alone. Remember, at any age it’s always safer to walk with a buddy. Plan to have your child walk to school with a sibling, friend or neighbour.

5. Teach your child never to talk to strangers: Tell your children to never accept rides or gifts from strangers. Remind them that adults should only ask other adults for help, not children.

6. If your child bikes to school, make sure he or she has a helmet that meets safety standards and is fitted and secured correctly. By law, every cyclist must wear an approved helmet if they are under 18 years old.

7. NOTE: The New Active Transportation By Law states that anyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when skateboarding, in-line skating or roller skating.

8. When driving kids, always deliver/pick them up as close to the school as possible. Don’t drive away until they are in the schoolyard or in the building.

9. Teach your children to arrive at the bus stop early, stay out of the street, wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching the street and to watch for cars.

10. Tell your child not to bend down in front of the bus to tie their shoes or pick up objects. The driver of the bus may not be able to see them.

11. Remind your children to stay seated on the bus at all times and to keep their heads and arms inside the bus when riding.

FOR MOTORISTS...

12. Do not pass a stopped school bus: Vehicle owners can be charged if their vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus. Fines range from $400 to $2,000 and six demerit points. Each subsequent offence: $1,000 to $4,000, six demerit points and possible jail time up to six months.

13. Drivers must always stop for the bus: Whether on a city street, highway or county road, and regardless of the speed limit and the number of lanes, motorists travelling in both directions must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper red lights flashing. (The only exception: on highways separated by a median, traffic coming from the opposite direction is not required to stop).

14. Once all passengers have boarded, the STOP arm will fold away. Do not start moving until the red lights have stopped flashing and the bus begins to move.

15. Be aware of school zone signs and reduce your speed in school zones. Always try and make eye contact with children waiting to cross the road.

16. Be patient and wait for children to complete their crossing before proceeding.

17. Stop when directed to do so by a crossing guard.

18. Always slow down at school drop off and pick up zones.

19.  Always follow the rules provided by your school with respect to drop off and pick up.

Charlie The Cougar To Be Moved From Peterborough To Quebec Zoo

Photos of Charlie via Riverview Park & Zoo Facebook page

Photos of Charlie via Riverview Park & Zoo Facebook page

Riverview Park and Zoo has announced they've made arrangements for a permanent home for 'Charlie' the cougar. Charlie was captured near Grafton, Ont., earlier this summer by MNR staff after he was found loitering close to a residence. It was subsequently determined that he had been a captive animal and as such, he could not be returned to the wild.

The zoo's animal care team worked closely with their CAZA/AZAC partners and in consultation with MNR staff to find a suitable home for him. As such, Charlie will be joining three other cougars at Zoo Sauvage de St-Félicien on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Zoo sauvage is an award-winning and CAZA/AZAC accredited zoo, located in St- Félicien, Quebec, which features 75 species in large, natural exhibits. This placement was selected as it will provide Charlie with an excellent quality of life and also because he will have an opportunity to participate in their breeding program.

While the Zoo has become fond of Charlie and would like to keep him at the Riverview Park and Zoo, their primary concern was to ensure that he be placed in a facility that will offer the best environment possible.
