Peterborough Girl Turns 8, Asks For Donations To Humane Society Instead Of Birthday Presents
/Georgia Dueck is an amazing girl. For her 8th birthday Wednesday (August 26th), she asked that in lieu of presents for her, her friends bring donations for the Peterborough Humane Society.

"The idea started for Georgia when we adopted our cat Sumo from the Humane Society in December 2013," her proud mom, Sandra, tells PTBOCanada. "Sumo was one of four cats left in a duffle bag outside the shelter two or three weeks before Christmas that year."

"When it came time to plan her 7th birthday that year, Georgia asked if she could do something for the Humane Society, like ask her friends to bring donations instead of gifts," Sandra says.
Georgia designed her jar label and her parents—Sandra and Jeff—told her friends what she was doing. For her 7th birthday, Georgia raised about $160 in cash and online donations—and about another $75 to $100 in pet supplies. This year, for her 8th birthday, she raised over $200 in cash and online donations and another $75 to $100 in supplies.
"Needless to say, we’re very proud of her and her giving spirit," Sandra tells PTBOCanada.

/The City of Peterborough has hired Wilson Carpentry from Peterborough to undertake an extensive restoration of the Pagoda Bridge located in Jackson Park. The project will address structural and roof components required due to significant deterioration.

Work is scheduled to start this week and will continue for eight to 10 weeks. This preservation project is important, as the bridge is a significant piece of Peterborough's architectural heritage.
In order to ensure public and worker safety, the bridge—which made our list of top romantic spots in Peterborough—will be closed to pedestrian travel beginning August 27th for about six weeks. Pedestrians should plan alternate routes during this period.

Peterborough Police Just Helped Crack An International Case Involving A Man Preying On Kids Online
/Peterborough Police Service have assisted in a joint investigation with Homeland Security that has lead to the arrest of a Louisiana man charged with a sextortion scheme involving children.
Here's how police worked with other forces to crack the case:
In November of 2014, Peterborough Police Service Constable Stephen Cox attended an address in Lakefield and spoke with a 12-year-old girl who was being extorted through an online app for nude images by an adult male.
Detective Ryan Wilson of the Peterborough Police Service conducted a follow-up and obtained a suspect’s IP address by means of a Production Order and determined that the suspect resided in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The reports of Constable Cox and Detective Wilson were forwarded to the Department of Homeland Security in Ottawa and eventually to the Baton Rouge field office in Louisiana.
The District Attorney in the State of Louisiana advised Peterborough Police that because of their investigation, a warrant was executed in Louisiana where at least four other victims were identified in various locations across the United States.
As result of the joint investigation, the accused Matthew Chaney Walker, 25, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is facing a number of charges including extortion, production of child pornography, receipt of child pornography, possession of child pornography and forfeiture.
“The work of Constable Cox and Detective Wilson was exemplary and demonstrates the benefits of both our generalist philosophy and collaborative approach,” says Detective Staff Sergeant Lynne Buehler, Peterborough Police Service.
“The benefits of our force having a member of the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet is apparent in this case. Detective Wilson represented our Service with the highest professionalism, which contributed to the successful investigation and prosecution of this case,” adds Detective Buehler.
The investigation of this case is ongoing. To date, four female child victims have been identified and law enforcement is attempting to confirm the identity of other victims.

Your Child Can Learn About Taking School Bus At Lansdowne Place First Rider Sessions
/This is a great opportunity for parents to get their young kids onto a bus before the first day of school so they know what's happening and aren't caught off guard!
There are "First Rider" sessions at Lansdowne Place Centre Court (near the escalators) taking place Friday, August 28th and Saturday, August 29th.
"First Rider" allows students—and their parents—to become familiar with the bus riding experience (and important safety rules) in advance of the new school year through this unique hands-on free event.
Registration is not required for these sessions, and the Dates & Times are as follows:
Friday, August 28th > ongoing sessions from 3 pm to 6 pm
Saturday, August 29th -> ongoing sessions from 9 am to 1 pm
