Help A Syrian Family Come To Peterborough

Safe Haven for Refugees is a group of Peterborough citizens who have banded together to help sponsor a Syrian family—the Alftih family—who will be resettling in our city.

The Alftih family fled their home in Syria after their family clothing business and livelihood was destroyed in the civil war. They have been living in Lebanon for the past several months.

The parents, Haran and Randa, and their four beautiful children—Sham, 3 years old and her brothers, Gaith, Omar, and Karim, 8, 12, and 16 years old—want to rebuild their life here in Peterborough, Canada, but will likely arrive with not much more than the clothes on their back. Safe Haven For Refugees is raising money to help provide the necessities of life—including housing, clothing and food costs for one year.

Give what you can here. Every dollar counts.

The Bullocks Wins Peterborough County 2015 Farm Family Of The Year

The Peterborough County Federation of Agriculture and the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce announced that the Bullock family—owners of Cedarvilla Holsteins at 2334 Northeys Road in Lakefield—are the 2015 Farm Family of the Year.

The Bullock Family

Cedarvilla Holsteins is a second generation family farm. Randy and Tara Bullock started dairy farming together in 1999 with Randy’s parents, and took over a couple of years later. Now with the help of their three children—Lily, Aidan, and Liam—they run the 200 acre dairy farm and crop an additional 400 acres.

Randy and Tara are active volunteers in the farming community, and they are also involved in numerous other farm organizations and committees, as well as local community groups—including the Lakefield United Church and both Peterborough and Lakefield Minor Hockey.

In the past 5 years, the Bullock children have become increasingly involved in the daily operation of the farm. Lily milks the cows, registers all the calves on the farm, and looks after any applications for shows the farm attends. Aidan and Liam make all the feed during the evening chores, do much of the haying during the summer, and are extremely helpful with anything mechanical.

These Miniature Aerial Images Of Peterborough Are Amazing

Twenty-two-year-old Peterborough photographer/videographer Justin Schofield—currently enrolled in the Integrated Media program at OCAD in Toronto—has created an amazing series of images of a "miniature Peterborough".

Justin first took the photos several years when given multiple chances to fly around Peterborough, and has now digitally manipulated them in this clever way—almost giving them a Lego feel.

"I was playing around with Tilt-shift effect by applying a gradient blur over aerial shots of Peterborough," he tells PTBOCanada. "There is something so intriguing about aerial perspectives, especially when they look miniature."

Justin, a talented photographer, was part of the last graduating class at PCVS before it shut down. He plans to get involved in the film industry once he's completed his studies at OCAD.

Here are more of his miniature photos below...

Patrick J. Stephen Just Made This Awesome Video About Peterborough

Talented young photographer/videographer Patrick J. Stephen approached PTBOCanada about doing a video about Peterborough to showcase his skills—and this city he loves.

We loved Patrick's video so much celebrating the city's people, places and things that make it so special, that we wanted to share it with you on PTBOCanada.

"Peterborough has more to offer than a place to live," says Patrick. "It is an amazing community to grow up in, a place to grow a business, a place to experience art and enjoy life. You can see the relentless energy through the busy streets, ingenuity in the business there and beauty in the landscapes that surround it. There is truly no place quite like Peterborough."
