First Electric Vehicle Charging Station Installed In Lakefield
/Selwyn Township has announced its first electric vehicle charging station, as residents can now charge their electric cars in downtown Lakefield.
The electric vehicle charging station is located in the municipal parking lot beside The Village Inn of Lakefield.
Selwyn Township says on their Facebook page that the charging station is free-of-charge for an unknown period of time as part of a provincial initiative to promote electric/hybrid vehicles.
They add that appropriate signage will be installed in the Spring with more information about the station and that residents will be informed when the service is no longer free and how much it will cost.

Closing Time: The Pig's Ear Tavern Has Been Sold
/Well it's official. The iconic Pig's Ear Tavern in Peterborough has been sold and is closing for good. The Piggy posted the news to their Facebook page on Friday (the 13th).
"The closing date is scheduled for April 22nd, 2017," co-owner Lylie Ryder says on Facebook. "The final count down has begun...100 DAYS."
Owners John Punter and Lylie are retiring. The Pig's Ear Tavern (fondly known as "The Piggy") on Brock Street is one of Peterborough's oldest pubs, opening originally as the St. Maurice Saloon in 1865 (after subsequent name changes, it became the Pig's Ear in the mid-Seventies).
The Piggy celebrated its 150th anniversary in Fall 2015.
This watering hole in downtown Peterborough is the place where generations of great memories (and epic hangovers) were made.
If you're coming home to Ptbo for a visit or live in town, make sure to drop by for a Labatt 50 or tray in the next few months before it's closing.
Peterborough Fire Rescue Just Saved A Drowning Dog In The Icy Otonabee River
/It was a surreal turn of events for CHEX Newswatch reporter Sarah Deeth on Thursday (January 12th). Deeth was on assignment as Peterborough Fire Rescue was doing ice rescue training on the Otonabee River.
She tweeted about it here...
But just moments after the training session wrapped, things got real when fire rescue responders got word of a dog that was in the icy river, and that would surely drown without an immediate rescue.
Deeth tweeted about it, along with a dramatic still from one of her camera shots for CHEX Newswatch of the cold, wet dog wrapped in a blanket after being rescued...
"I got to the scene as firefighters were bundling this little guy up," Deeth tells PTBOCanada. "He was shivering something terrible. And the firefighters were so kind, wrapping this little soul in blankets and speaking softly to keep him calm. It was just really nice to see."

Women’s Business Network Of Peterborough Donates $21,000 To YWCA Crossroads Shelter
/The Women’s Business Network of Peterborough (WBN) has announced a $21,019.75 donation to YWCA Peterborough Haliburton, thanks to the outstanding success of the 2016 WBN Holiday Gala held in December.
Each year, the Gala raises funds in support of the YWCA Crossroads Shelter, an essential community resource for women and children fleeing violence. The WBN raised its fundraising goal to $20,000 in 2016 in response to the urgent need for support during the busiest on record for the YWCA.

The WBN revealed the final donation amount on Wednesday night (January 11th) at its January member’s meeting at the Peterborough Holiday Inn, where WBN Program Directors, Louise Racine and Sana Virji, presented the cheque to Lynn Zimmer, Executive Director of YWCA Peterborough Haliburton, and Nicole Pare, YWCA Special Events Coordinator.
YWCA's NUTRITIONAL WELL-BEING PROGRAM IS VITAL
The funds raised at the Gala will support the YWCA’s Nutritional Well-Being program at Crossroads Shelter, which provides healthy food, supplements and vitamins to women and their children 365 days a year, at a cost of $10.88 per person, per day. The program also helps families learn about meal planning, food preparation and principles of nutrition.
“The kitchen is the heart of the Crossroads Shelter,” says YWCA's Lynn Zimmer. “It’s where women prepare breakfast and lunches for themselves and their children, where informal cooking lessons can happen any day, where kids can learn to cook and women can share stories and conversation over a snack or a cup of coffee or tea. And our Nutritional Well-Being staff weave counselling into the mix along with the recipe ingredients.”

Peterborough Police Unveil New Door Hanger That Rotary Club Funded
/The Peterborough Police Service has produced a new door hanger that will be used by their officers while canvassing during an investigation or when attending a call for service when there is no answer.
Here is what it looks like...
Communicating with members of the community is crucial to the Police Service. The new door hanger is another simple and effective way they can communicate with the public by leaving a notice for someone who is not home with the appropriate information so that they can respond.

There Is An Amazing Race For Youth Happening In Peterborough As Part Of Snofest
/Join the fun on Saturday, January 21st, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. as teams will race to finish tasks at 10 different pit stops all located downtown in an Amazing Race that is part of Snofest activities.
Teams must visit each pit stop and perform a task before they will receive their next clue. The Top 3 teams to finish the race will win cash prizes.

-> The race starts at 2 p.m. sharp from The LOFT, Downtown Youth Space room #15 at PACE@PCVS, 201 McDonnel Street.

-> Teams will consist of 2 players.
-> Yummy free pizza and hot chocolate will be provided at the LOFT, Downtown Youth Space at the end of race.
