First Saturday Farmers Market In Downtown Peterborough Was A Smash

On Saturday (June 9th), hundreds of people turned out for the first ever Peterborough Regional Farmers' Market at Citi Centre courtyard.

Many of the 40+ vendors on hand sold out of their supplies before noon: Erin McLean from McLean Berry Farm had this to say in a heartwarming Facebook post excerpted here...

"Sometimes there are no words...but you have to try anyway. We are...overwhelmed. In the best way possible. I have found myself near tears numerous times today, but as I reflected upon the day and all of the wonderful supportive comments, customers, vendors, partners, early rising volunteers - and not to mention the hugs and love that was showered upon us...I couldn’t help the tears from flowing from the gratitude we feel for this community.

We knew that there were people who loved us. You show us over and over again with your kind words, your actions and your support...but I don’t think anyone expected the turnout we saw today. In a word...we were...flabbergasted. I can’t believe that we sold out of so many things so early. I cannot believe that so many vendors sold out so early. I’m so excited for next week when those vendors will have more, because they now know and realize the support the community is able to show them. I’m so excited for more and more things to come into season."

“Safe Under 7” Traffic Campaign Launched Targeting Speeding In Residential Neighbourhoods

In response to community concerns, Peterborough Police Service is launching a summer traffic campaign targeting speeding in residential neighbourhoods.

“The number one complaint we hear on a daily basis is about speeding in residential areas,” says Traffic Sergeant Peter Sejrup, who is in the video at the end of this post explaining the program further.

“We have heard those complaints and are embarking on an aggressive traffic enforcement campaign that will slow down drivers and save lives,” Sejrup adds.

Traffic Sergeant Peter Sejrup

The campaign, called Safe Under 7, will run for June, July and August, and take a zero tolerance approach to motorists driving in excess of 7 km/h over the posted speed limit in residential neighbourhoods.

“This number is not arbitrary—driving just 7 km/h above the posted speed limit in residential neighbourhoods can have catastrophic results,” says Sgt. Sejrup.

“This campaign has the capacity to make a significant difference in reducing personal injuries, property damage and fatal collisions.”

Learn more about the program in this Peterborough Police video being widely shared on Facebook...

Residents who wish to report traffic concerns in their neighbourhood are asked to call the Peterborough Police Service Traffic Unit at 705-876-1122 ext. 289.

There Is An Open House At The Buddhist Temple Garden In Cavan June 24th

On June 24th, the public will have to chance to check out the progress of the Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden at the Buddhist Temple being constructed on the outskirts of Bethany.

The Open House hours that day run from 10 am to 2:30 p.m., with a special consecration ceremony opening the event.

Visitors to Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden can also do their visit the easy way by riding a comfortable highway coach through the 500 acre garden.

You can reserve a spot on the bus by emailing Kathy Morton here or calling her at 705.277.2751. Visitors who decide to walk should wear sturdy shoes, bring water and sunscreen.

Below is a picture showing the enormity of the laughing Buddha on the grounds. It was built in China, cut into 72 pieces and shipped here in containers and reassembled. It weighs 127 tons. The head alone is 26 tons.

The Wutai Shan Garden is located at 708 Ski Hill Road, a few minutes north of Bethany. The garden is one of four sites being developed by the Buddhist Association of Canada. The total acreage of the four sites combined is about 1,700 acres.

The sites—chosen because of their serenity, tranquility and natural environment—have taken two decades to plan and will take about 20 more years to construct.

We took a tour of the grounds back in June 2015. Read about it here.
