Peterborough Girl's Video On Raising Awareness For Type 1 Diabetes Has Nearly 27,000+ Facebook Views

Ten-year-old Peterborough girl Tilly Stimpson is hoping to return to Parliament Hill in October for Kids For A Cure Lobby day—they were there in November 2016 for this bi-annual event—to lobby once again for Type 1 Diabetes. Both Tilly and her father Matt have the disease.

As part of her application process for the special day, Tilly had to produce a video which her Dad posted to his Facebook page that has now garnered nearly 27,000 views and counting already (scroll down to watch it below).

Tilly (pictured with her dog, Olive) is making a great impact on raising awareness about living with Type 1 diabetes

"We are thrilled with the reaction the video has received, and even more thrilled with the support of people through their comments on social media," Tilly's mother Joanna tells PTBOCanada. "We’ve been showing Tilly the responses and she is really excited by the number—she checks every day to see the counter go up!"

"Tilly had such a great experience at the last event in 2016, and was was keen to apply again this year. They changed the application process slightly in that she had to produce a 60 second video in addition to the online application and a bio she had to write," Joanna adds.

The family chose an angle about research in the video as this is the part Tilly, who was diagnosed at two and a half, feels is most important. Without research, they won’t find a cure to this very misunderstood disease which is often compared to Type 2 diabetes.

"Lobbying the government for money is not just about funding research, it’s also about making the life saving supplies needed accessible to everyone," Joanna tells PTBOCanada. "Not every province covers the pump and the standard of care differs everywhere (even on a school by school basis). Tilly is about to take part in a clinical trial at Sunnybrook for a new insulin."

The Stimpson family have been advocating for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) since Tilly was first diagnosed, and her school has raised $12,000 and the Stimpson family $32,000 through the generous support of the community.

After Kids for a Cure in October which Tilly hopes to be accepted for again, the family is part of a local chapter hosting a JDRF fundraising event "Cuisine For A Cure" at the Venue on November 9th. More info on that event can be found here.

Peterborough Humane Society Announces New Partnership With Halifax Humane Society

Peterborough Humane Society (PHS), in continuing with a commitment made to give each and every animal that comes into their care the best possible future, has established a new partnership with the Halifax Humane Society in Nova Scotia to find new homes for two pit bulls that have recently come into their care.

Pit bulls are a breed of dog that are banned in Ontario, and both of the dogs that have been transported fell under the Bill 132 of the Dog Owners Liability Act.

This transport with their new East Coast partner was made possible by the efforts of Officer Darryl Porter—a member of the PHS animal control team—as well as a PHS valued volunteer who travelled to Nova Scotia to deliver the dogs.

On the return journey, the transport picked up three new dogs that were part of the most recent rescue from the Korean Meat Market through Humane Society International (HSI).

"By facilitating transport of these animals, it gives them the opportunity to live without restriction of breed, and enjoy life with new loving and caring homes," says Officer Porter. "I am proud to be a part of transport, and glad to see these beautiful dogs enjoy their new start.”

“I am excited to see this great new partnership with Halifax Humane Society come to light, as it continues our focus of collaboration with our animal welfare affiliates from coast to coast," says PHS Executive Director Shawn Morey.

"We are very happy to have so many great partnerships established, and continue to develop opportunities to further expand our affiliations, both locally and abroad. Our mission is to provide care and compassion to every animal that requires our services," adds Morey.

The agreements comprising the transaction meet the terms and conditions approved by Council, including:

- An agreement to develop a regional operations centre and new fleet maintenance facility in Peterborough on specified pieces of land to be acquired concurrently with the closing of the acquisition of the assets of PDI following regulatory approvals

The agreements are subject to Ontario Energy Board (OEB) approval. The OEB regulates the province’s energy sector, including setting rules for electricity companies and establishing rates that energy utilities are permitted to charge.

PDI is one part of the Peterborough Utilities group of companies. PDI includes the “poles and wires” business of Peterborough Utilities. City of Peterborough Holdings Inc. retains ownership of the rest of the group of companies, including its water utility, the Riverview Park and Zoo, metering services, and its power generation business.

Watch This Dramatic Rescue Of A Trapped Kitten In Peterborough

For several days, Scott Arnold heard meowing coming from his back patio in downtown Peterborough but no one could figure out where the sounds were coming from.

Well, that is until Saturday (July 28th) when an OSPCA agent from the Peterborough Humane Society investigated thoroughly and discovered that the cat had somehow got itself embedded in a grate (covering a massive fan with huge blades) 6 feet under Scott's patio. Next thing you know they were dismantling a portion of the patio so the agent could squeeze between the boards and get down to the little guy...

The video captured by Arnold and posted to his personal Facebook page is being widely shared on Facebook, with nearly 5,000 views since being posted on Saturday.

Peterborough Ranked One Of Most Active Cities In Canada

Expedia has ranked Peterborough one of the 21 most active cities in Canada.

Some of the factors Expedia looked at in compiling their list include: average number of marathons and hiking trails; access to bike paths, trails, and races; per capita gyms; and abundance of outdoor activities such as kayaking, canoeing, etc.

"To paraphrase Salt-N-Pepa, you’ve got to push it when you’re in Peterborough, Ontario," Expedia says of Peterborough.

"This means pushing your endurance along Trent Canal when you’re riding your bike next to dozens of pros. Pushing your body up just a little higher off the safe ground at Rock and Rope Climbing Centre. And pushing your paddle skills on Little Lake to one day earn a glittering spot at the Canadian Canoe Museum in town."

Help Newly Planted Trees On Public Property By Filling Those Water Bags

During dry weather over the summer, residents can help ensure the survival of newly planted trees on public property by filling the water bags that are attached to the trees at least one or twice per week until the cooler (and wetter) fall weather arrives.

“Public Works staff are working hard to supply water to newly planted trees, recently laid sod and flower displays throughout the City,” says Paul Hambidge, urban forest manager with the City of Peterborough. “Even recent rainfall has been insufficient to make up the water deficit that all young trees are experiencing. Newly planted trees suffer significant loss of roots when they are lifted at the nursery, making watering during the first growth season after planting critical to their survival.”

The slow release water bags attached to trees can hold 15 gallons of water. Based on current water use charges, one of the bags can be filled almost 17 times for $1.42—in other words, a newly planted tree can be watered all season for $1.42.

“Even if you have an established tree, it will still benefit from watering during a prolonged dry spell,” Hambidge adds.
