Peterborough Fire Services Reminds Residents Open Air Burning Not Permitted

Peterborough Fire Services reminds residents that open-air burning is not permitted within the City of Peterborough in accordance with the Ontario Fire Code.

Chimineas and other wood-burning devices are not approved appliances for open air fires.

Fire bowls, fire-pit tables and barbeques that burn propane or natural gas are examples of permitted appliances, as long as they are TSSA approved.

“Open-air burning poses a significant risk of fire spreading as well as related health concerns from the smoke,” said Fire Chief Chris Snetsinger. “Even the smell of smoke can cause breathing difficulties in adults and children.”

Peterborough Airport Soars Again With First Chartered Flight Since 2019

It was a three-year flight delay but Peterborough Airport had its first chartered trip this year, sending 107 passengers off to New Orleans, La. on Thursday morning.

This is the eight year BST Vacations has offered departures from the Peterborough Airport. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

The flight was from Blowes & Stewart Travel Group (BST), flying a Boeing 737-400 that will return on Sunday as part of their three-day travel package.

The travel agency has not had a flight in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Scott Stewart, BST president was happy to see the passengers’ smiling faces when they boarded the plane.

"We knew it had to be about community and the community first,” he said. “When we saw the thralls of people that came that have been on our regulars, it was just so heartwarming to see that."

The flight offered its passengers food and drink that are all locally sourced.

Continental breakfast and in-flight meals were hand-picked and made the morning of the flight by Sobeys Catering department (Lansdowne Street location). Beer served was from Publican House Brewery with a new Pet Pilsner. Those proceeds went towards funding the Peterborough Animal Care Centre for the Peterborough Humane Society. Liquor came from Black’s Distillery, specifically their Heritage Vodka as an alternate alcoholic option.

The airport remained busy during the pandemic despite no travel flights. Maintenance, cleaning and other operations that uses the facility kept everyone running at full speed according to Malcolm Cook, airport manager."

"We haven't had as much travel flight occurring at the airport,” he said. “The college (Seneca) has continued their operations, Flying Colours (Corp.) has continued theirs so our jobs have pretty much remained the same."

Both Cook and Stewart anticipate more chartered flights in the future with the first one taking off. Nashville, Tenn., Savannah, Ga. and Las Vegas, Nev. are three US destinations BST has already planned according to their website.

"I think we're all looking forward to seeing the pandemic behind us," said Cook. "Anything that beckons towards that is great."

Peterborough Police Service Investigating Incident Involving NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh

Peterborough Police Service is actively investigating the incident involving NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and protestors during his visit to Peterborough on Tuesday.

“Peterborough” has been a trending topic on Twitter since the incident that has garnered national attention. Photo by Angela O’Grady.

Protestors were outside the NDP campaign office building on George Street when Singh arrived and left the premises. Obscene words and gestures were made at the federal party leader by the protestors.

"We are aware that due to our staffing shortages, we are not always able to engage in proactive policing patrols," said Tim Farquharson, acting chief. "We also understand that public safety is of paramount importance and encourage residents to contact us with their concerns or any evidence that could aid in our investigations."

Police were unaware that Singh was in Peterborough as they were not contacted by the NDP leader prior to his visit according to a Tweet.

Singh was in town to show support for newly-appointed candidate Jen Deck for the Peterborough-Kawartha Riding. Deck was introduced to the party by Andrea Howarth, NDP Provincial leader on April 26.

The 2022 Ontario General Election begins on June 2.

The following are candidates for this year’s election:

  • MPP Dave Smith, incumbent Progressive Conservative Party

  • Greg Dempsey, Liberal Party

  • Jen Deck, New Democratic Party

  • Robert Gibson, Green Party

  • Tom Marazzo, Ontario Party

Director That Documented Balsam Lake Tragedy In 1926 Makes A Stop At Aron Theatre In Campbellford

Brotherhood, a film depicting the 1926 tragedy on Balsam Lake, was screened at The Aron Theatre in Campbellford on Thursday morning for high school students, and will show again at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Director Richard Bell and actor Gage Munroe were there Thursday morning to present the film and answer questions after the screening.

“It’s particularly meaningful that young people are coming to see this movie because usually our audiences skew a bit older - that’s the era that still goes to the movie theatre,” said Bell. “So it’s great that they’re coming today because this is a young person story.”

The story focuses The Brotherhood of St Andrews, a boys leadership camp on Balsam Lake. As the boys and their leaders take off by canoe, a freak summer storm hits and what follows is a combination of light and dark, as viewers learn more about the characters and their past.

“Older audiences are seeing it because they remember the halcyon days of summer and that camp experience but I want younger people to see it because it’s a young person survival story. Seeing that kind of heroism that these young people exhibited 95 years ago is very meaningful. I hope it makes kids go ‘would I do that?’,” said Bell. “I think that’s why we go to the movies - to see stories and think ‘would I do that?’.”

Though Brotherhood was filmed in 2017, being set ten years after the Spanish Flu pandemic, themes that arise throughout the characters stories might be somewhat reflective of the world today. High school students in attendance on Thursday had the opportunity to reflect on The Great War, the Spanish Flu, and ‘what it means to be a man’.

The screening at The Aron Theatre is the final stop in the South East Ontario Brotherhood Roadshow.

Bell, along with various actors, made stops at The Regent Theatre in Picton, The Loft in Cobourg and at The Empire in Belleville.

“I am so pleased that our local independent cinemas have all enthusiastically come on board to support this Canadian film,” said Russ Christianson, founding President and General Manager of the Aron Theatre Co-op. “Coming out of the pandemic, people in our communities need to have opportunities to get out again to socialize and decrease their pandemic-enforced isolation. We are excited about this opportunity.”

Tickets are still available for the 7 p.m. screening on Thursday, which will be followed by a question and answer period with Director Richard Bell and actor Gage Munroe.

Tickets are $10 online and $12 at the door. Seating is unassigned. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Local Author Donates 50 Per Cent Of Proceeds From Book Emulating The Feeling Of Anxiety To CHMA HKPR

Local author Erica Richmond will be donating 50 per cent of sales from her book ‘Pixie and The Bees’ during May to Canadian Mental Health Association of Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge.

The story of Pixie and the Bees is about a young pixie that one day swallows a swarm of bees, though doctors can’t seem to help her and her friends don’t know what is wrong with her.

It is meant to tell the story of Richmond’s experience with anxiety, and her journey to a diagnosis, then to her learning to manage it.

According to a press release, Richmond believes that the community must work together to raise awareness and funds for mental health services.

“We are extremely grateful for Erica’s support as she donates 50 per cent of her book proceeds to our branch of the Canadian mental Health Association throughout the month of May and we congratulate her on the publishing of her book,” said Jack Veitch, CMHA HKPR.

Humane Society Seeking $3 Million in Funding to Complete Peterborough Animal Care Centre

With the Peterborough Humane Society (PHS) less than six months away from moving into the Peterborough Animal Care Centre, the shelter is seeking $3 million to complete the project.

The groundbreaking ceremony began in late June of last year. Photo courtesy of the Peterborough Humane Society.

The centre is located at 1999 Technology Dr. where construction began in May of last year. The fundraising goal was at $10 million since then.

“Spreading the word, donating and endorsing the project is what we need right now to get us into our new home,” said Shawn Morey, PHS executive director. “The Peterborough Animal Care Centre will truly revolutionize animal care, not only in Peterborough but for our greater region.”

“The project is currently on budget and following the timeline, which has been a challenge with Covid-19. But thanks to the many local contractors, suppliers and the hard work going into this project we’ve been able to stay on track. The pillar of this project is the funding, and with the community’s support we can achieve our goal in revolutionizing animal care in Peterborough and beyond.”

The Centre is projected to be completed by the year end according to the Humane Society.  The building will be over 24,000 sq. ft. and include a state-of-the-art Animal Adoption & Education Centre, Publicly Accessible & High-Volume Spay/Neuter Clinic and Canada’s first Dog Rehabilitation Centre created in partnership with the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society.
