Local Woman Bringing Awareness To Individuals Mental Health Through New Business Discovery Bands

Jodilynn White started Discovery Headbands after retiring from policing due to an ongoing battle with mental health, she hopes that the brand brings awareness to individuals struggling with and overcoming their own mental health conditions.

All she ever wanted to be was a police officer, that’s what White says.

She started her career as a police officer young, but soon realized there were things going on mentally that were not ok.

White was signed off work by her doctor, as she was considered a risk to herself and to her coworkers. She would soon be diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, severe anxiety and major depression.

This happened in 2017 and she has not returned to work as a police officer since.

“I was trying to figure out what I could do to make myself feel accomplished,” said White. “I started making headbands. I’ve always worn headbands, I found them comforting when going through my treatments - like a security blanket.”

She says when she realized she could make them herself she thought she could use that skill to raise awareness surrounding mental illness.

Each collection of headbands is inspired by an individual with their own mental illness journey.

People are invited to submit their stories on the Discovery Headbands website and after review, white will create a collection inspired by them and launch it shortly after.

Since April 2022 White has launched two collections. One inspired by her own story and one inspired by ‘Vanessa’ who worked as a firefighter and paramedic.

Soon, White will launch a collection inspired by ‘Mark’ a military Veteran who completed a tour in Afghanistan. Mark’s collection will be for sale on Sunday.

Mark, Vanessa and Jodilynn’s full stories can be read on discoveryheadbands.com.

All collections can be viewed and purchased at discoveryheadbands.com

Piece Of Peterborough History On Display At Auto Connect Sales

Auto Connect Sales invites the public to visit and view their newly installed photo of Westclox staff in 1947. This piece of Peterborough history was donated by Al Carmichael, who’s wife Rena (nee Warner) can be found in the photo.

Westclox opened in Peterborough in 1920 and made timepieces that were shipped around the world.

Rena worked there before switching careers and working at General Electric, another iconic Peterborough fixture.

Carmichael, who turned 94 on June 1, came to Peterborough from Nova Scotia in 1949.

He began working for ESSO and met his wife on a blind date set up by a friend.

The two were married a few years after the photo was taken, and remained together for 58 years until Rena’s passing.

Carmichael says the photo was found rolled up in the drawer of an old dresser.

Carmichael remained friends with Auto Connect salesperson Alexis Raffan after purchasing a car years ago and the two decided the photo would be best if displayed for everyone to see.

Auto connect owners Cheryl and Martin invite anyone to come in and admire this important piece of Peterborough history.

Downtown Is Blooming Thanks To Volunteers And Peterborough's New Green Team

Peterborough’s new Green Team has kicked off another season of beautifying the downtown with planters full of colourful flowers.

This year, the downtown is slated to be brimming with plants with over 100 planters and green spaces for the Green Team gardening crew to tend to.

“Having green space, having plants and flowers - that impacts how people perceive our town,” said Dawn Pond, DBIA Placemaking Project Manager. “These edible planters will help businesses, they’re also great for the environment as they offer food and shelter for pollinators.”

Restaurants and businesses that have planters in front were given the opportunity to chose between an ‘edible’ planter with herbs and greens, a flower planter, or a mix of both. Many restaurants chose the edible option and will be using these greens in their dishes.

On Tuesday, volunteers and members of the Green Team met at Peterborough Square to put together planters and learn about gardening.

The Green Team is run through One City Peterborough and offers employment to those who otherwise may have a difficult time applying to or having a job.

According to Jenny Kennedy-Bloom, Employment Facilitator at One City, employees of the Green Team are trained in horticulture, offered support and given the opportunity to gain valuable, employable skills.

“This is a supportive employment program,” she said. “We know that there is a gap between people wanting to work and the jobs that are available sometimes being to big of a jump for people.”

Planters and gardens in the downtown area will be maintained throughout the season by the green Team.

Lions Club Shoe Drive Collects Over 1,400 Pairs of Footwear For Third-World Countries

The second annual Peterborough Lions Club Shoe Drive saw continued success as 1,402 pairs of shoes were collected to be given to third-world countries announced on Tuesday.

MPP Dave Smith (right) donated three pairs of shoes to contribute to the final total. Photo by David Tuan Bui.

Gently-used or brand-new footwear of all kinds was accepted at the drive from the month-long campaign from May 14 to Tuesday. Community members could drop off their donations at the club at 347 Burnham St. or at designated locations around the area.

The shoes will go to Soles4Souls which are given to women in third-world countries to help them get out of poverty according to Judy Jenkins, Lions service chair.

“They clean them, they sell them in the market where they give them to kids who don't have shoes because in the third-world countries, the kids have to have shoes in order to go to school,” she said.

MPP Dave Smith remained involved with the drive, donating three pairs of shoes as the last official tallied donation. The inaugural drive last year yielded 2,549 pairs but Smith says this year’s number is misleading and is still an impressive feat given the circumstances.

“When they started the drive, it was just before the beginning of May and we had that storm that just came through,” said Smith. “They lost about 10 or 12 days of activity going out into the community to try and raise awareness.”

The club’s goal was 1,000 pairs and almost did not meet it until a surge of donations came through out of nowhere.

“The Peterborough community, they're outstanding when it comes to generosity," said Jenkins. "All of a sudden in the last week, we went from 540 a week out and now we're over 1,400."

The community can still contribute to the cause by donating to Bioped Footcare at 655 The Queensway, Unit 6.

Letter courtesy of Ed Arnold.

Dear Friends:

I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone celebrating the 150th anniversary of lacrosse in Peterborough.

Lacrosse saw its beginnings here in 1872 when the Red Stockings played their first game. One hundred and fifty years later, Peterborough has become a celebrated lacrosse community, having won 29 senior and junior national championships and more than 150 provincial titles. This special milestone offers a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the proud history of the sport in the city, to pay tribute to those who have contributed to its growth and success, and to set goals for the future.

I would like to commend the Peterborough Lacrosse 150th anniversary committee for their hard work in organizing this celebration. I am certain that the many events planned to mark this milestone will be enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

Please accept my best wishes for a memorable anniversary celebration and continued success in the years to come.

Sincerely,

The Rt. Hon. Justin P. J. Trudeau, P.C., M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers are having their home opener with an opponent named later this week on Thursday.

A flag celebrating 150 years of lacrosse was flown at city hall on May 4 and was there for a week. It was given to the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame after being taken down. Mayor Diane Therrien declared 2022 to be the “Summer of Lacrosse” during that ceremony.

A “150” beer was crafted by Publican House Brewery to commemorate the occasion on May 26. The beer is a four per cent lager.

The third annual Peterborough Lakers Alumni Golf Tournament is being held on on June 24 at Keystone Links Golf & Country Club.

Peterborough Public Health Activates Heat Warning Information System As Summer Weather Approaches

Peterborough Public Health has activated its Heat Warning and Information System (HWIS) to advise residents of the best way to protect their health when temperatures soar.

File Photo.

Environment and Climate Change Canada will issue Heat Warnings in advance of the heat event. Forecasters will assess if two or more consecutive days of weather that meet either the humidex or temperature criteria (daytime highs or nighttime lows) are expected in the region.

If so, a Heat Warning will be issued. Information about these warning levels is available on the Extreme Weather - Heat webpage under Environmental Hazards on www.peterboroughpublichealth.ca and outlined in the news release.

A Heat Warning is issued when two consecutive days are forecasted to have a daytime high temperature greater than or equal to 31°C AND a nighttime temperature greater than or equal to 20°C or a humidex greater than or equal to 40. This level of warning reminds residents of the following core messages: to keep their home cool, stay out of the heat, keep the body cool and hydrated, assist others, and recognize the symptoms of heat exhaustion.

An Extended Heat Warning will be issued for a heat event lasting three or more days. This level of warning reminds residents of the core messages above, in addition to providing details on how and where to stay cool, advising suspension of strenuous outdoor activities, reminders to assist vulnerable groups, and to watch for further information through the media and the Public Health website.

During heat warnings, One Roof Community Centre will extend its hours of service to 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 1:00 – 9:30p.m. One Roof will close between noon and 1:00 p.m. for meal preparation and cleaning; a lunch meal will be served between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Electric City Football Club Teams to Compete in Inaugural Trent Severn Cup

An early rivalry between the Electric City Football Club (ECFC) and Simcoe County Rovers FC has sparked the Trent Severn Cup for the two newest League1 Ontario teams announced Monday.

The idea for the Trent Severn Cup was sparked local soccer districts, East Central Ontario Soccer Association (ECOSA) and Huronia District Soccer Association HDSA, that the two League1 teams represent.

“Both franchises have shown a great desire to compete at the highest standards and strive to participate at the highest level in the Canadian Soccer landscape,” said John Copp, HDSA president. “The Districts want to help kick off these franchises' inaugural season and provide the groundwork for what we expect will be a long (friendly) rivalry between two top League 1 Ontario Clubs.”

The cup features a unique format where the winning club is based on the combined score of both the Men’s and Women’s matches each season. If the score after the two matches remains tied, the competition will then be decided by a penalty shootout in the second match.

“Both Clubs share their District's vision to positively impact soccer within their communities and help provide meaningful pathways for players, coaches, and administrators from the grassroots to the semi-professional and professional levels,” said Leslee Bax, ECOSA president. “Both local soccer districts are extremely excited to have semi-professional soccer within our Districts and to see the competition play out for the first time.”

The women play first on Wednesday at 8 p.m followed by the men on July 23rd at 3 p.m. with both games at Fleming College.

“These are the type of competitions that will hopefully help the game grow in the regions and create excitement for the fans and the players,” said Rob Jenkins, ECFC president. “We are very thankful for the two districts support and work in putting this together. We have great respect for the Simcoe County Rovers project and are excited to have an annual competition between two ambitious clubs.”

The trophy (purchased by the two districts) will be on display at the women’s match and will be presented to the winning club at the conclusion of the men’s match.

“As the game continues to grow in a positive direction throughout the country these are the type of relationships and cultures that will help define success and professional development,” said Julian de Guzman, Simcoe County Rovers president.

Peterborough Century 21 Lakers Return With A Victory At Season Opener

The Peterborough Century 21 Lakers were victorious in their MSL season opener on Sunday evening, defeating the Cobourg Kodiaks at the Cobourg Community Centre 15-11.

The Lakers were shorthanded, missing up to 11 regulars from their lineup, and relied heavily on newcomers Austin Hasen, Thomas Whitty, Caleb Creasor, Mitch Ogilvie and Zach Young, and four players called up from the Junior A team – Tyler Grandel, Holden Lowes and Ben Trumble, and Deacan Knott, who backed up Mike Poulin in goal.

“It took us about a period and a half to get accustomed to playing with each other,” said Holden Cattoni, who scored twice and added two assists.”

Hasen, Creasor, Ogilvie and Trumble all scored their first MSL goals.

“It felt really good to be back,” said head coach Mike Hasen. “It’s been a long couple years and to see our group back is a good feeling. I like the way we came to play right off the bat. Our offensive was good and responsible. Our defense was missing a few bodies but they were good; they kept a great tempo and that was great to see.”

The Lakers’ home opener is set for this Thursday. An opponent and more details will be released early this week.

Scoring for the Lakers:

Turner Evans (2-5)

Holden Cattoni (2-2)

Austin Hasen (2-1)

Cory Vitarelli (2-0)

Corey Small (2-0)

Kiel Matisz (1-3)

Thomas Hoggarth (1-1)

Ben Trumble (1-0)

Mixed Results For Electric City Football As Men Tie And Women Face A Tough Loss This Weekend

A busy weekend of ECFC action yielded mixed results, as the Men’s side drew Master's FA 2-2 on the road, while the Women’s side took a tough 2-1 home loss against Tecumseh SC.

The ECFC Men (3-3-2) came home with a 2-2 draw against Master’s FA (0-6-2) after a wild finish to their match in Scarborough.

The clubs remained deadlocked until the 53rd minute when Francis Ameyaw found the back of the net to give Master’s a 1-0 lead. ECFC struck back when Jordan Brown scored his 4th goal of the season to bring the game back to level. Ben Vyfschaft gave ECFC their first lead of the match, when he scored three minutes into extra time, a goal which looked like a game winner at the time.

ECFC’s lead was short-lived as Master’s was able to gridlock the game for good in the 94th minute when Samer Hamade scored.

ECFC Head Coach Randy Ribeiro thought his team deserved a better fate on Saturday night.

“We were so dominant throughout the entire match and deserved the 3 points. We were persistent but credit to Master’s, they defended really well in their 18-yard box all game.”

Ribeiro said the result is a good lesson for his team to learn from as they regroup for their next matchup.

“The game turned so quickly from going from such a high to feeling deflated after conceding in the final seconds of the game. It is a learning opportunity for us. We will regroup and prepare for our game against Scroscoppi on Friday evening”.

The ECFC roster featured another new face in net on Saturday night as Isaiah Cook started his first game for the club. Cook was replacing Eleias Himaras who was unable to play due to an injury sustained in training. Cook is part of the FC Durham/ECFC U21 Reserve team and has been training with the squad and dressing as the second keeper since Quillan Roberts left to represent Guyana in their CONCACAF Nations League Cup matches.

Next up for ECFC they head back on the road for their next matchup as they take on Scroscoppi FC (3-4-1) on Friday night for a 9 p.m. kickoff.

The ECFC Women were defeated 2-1 by Tecumseh SC in League1 Ontario Women’s action at Fleming College. Tecumseh SC was led to victory by Striker Kailyn Robertson, who netted a brace in Saturday night's matchup.

Tecumseh (3-2-3) opened the scoring early when Robertson found the back of the net in the 14th minute. ECFC (6-4-0) was able to tie the game up in the 40th minute when Captain Holly O’Neill finished off a scramble in the box after a corner kick, scoring her 7th goal of the season. Tecumseh rapidly restored their lead when Robertson potted her second goal of the night just before halftime in the 45th minute.

ECFC pushed for the equalizer in the second half, creating many positive chances, but were unable to find the back of the net against Tecumseh’s compact defensive formation.

Women’s Assistant Coach Ron Clarke said the story of the game was a tale of two halves, although his team could not find the equalizing goal in the final 45 minutes.

“First half I thought we struggled to build out of the back, they did a good job of pressing us. Two silly mistakes on the back hurt us. The second half, I thought we made the adjustments, we dominated possession the way we wanted to, created chances, but just fell short.”

ECFC entered the matchup with the opportunity to string together three consecutive victories for the first time this season and were unsuccessful in their attempt to achieve the feat. Midfielder Angelika Mihalopulos said the team needs to take the patient approach and trust the process will yield results.

“It is a new team, so it is not going to happen right away. Today was a better showing, it felt like we had the ball 95 per cent of the time, we just could not take that last little step and finish it.”

Just over halfway through the season, ECFC Women currently sit in 6th (and final playoff spot) in the 20 team Women’s Premier Division. This week is a very difficult set of matches for the women with them hosting 3rd place Simcoe County (7-1-2) for the first leg of the Trent Severn Cup competition on Wednesday night at Fleming College. Then on Saturday they host league leading FC London (9-1-0) for a 3pm kickoff at Fleming College.

Coach Clarke said his team will need to be focused and prepared ahead of these upcoming match ups against tough opponents.

“We have a really tough week this week, so we have a lot of work ahead of us. We are really going to need the community to come out and get behind the ladies this week.”

Tickets are available for both matches at electriccityfc.com/tickets and at the gate.

Rotary Club of Peterborough Holds Gala To Celebrate Centennial Anniversary

The champagne bottles were popping for the Rotary Club of Peterborough as they celebrated their 100th anniversary with a gala at the Fleming College Ballroom on Saturday night.

The group is known for connecting leaders, exchanging ideas, sharing interests and taking action on several social challenges with donations turned into grants that fund community improvements according to their website’s mandate.

"Rotary has its own inertia. It's not about one person or the leader, we do service and we always have projects,” said Atul Swarup, former Rotary president. "Members bring projects to the table so that keeps our club fresh and new and keeps our members invigorated."

The club honoured members and presidents (both past and present) during the ceremony with a presentation and speeches while reflecting on the 100 years of service to the local community.

Mayor Diane Therrien commemorated the occasion with the City officially recognizing the club’s accomplishments and milestones.

The Rotary Club was first founded on Apr. 1, 1921. They wanted to host the gala last year but had to pivot and reschedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When we started planning it, we had all these wonderful events planned and basically we had to cancel pretty much everything,” said Wayne Harding, club president. “Getting to the gala after having to reschedule it three times, having to change the venue, it's just been great to see everyone tonight and thoroughly enjoy the community.”

The gala featured dinner (made by Fleming culinary students), live music from The Dreamboats, a DJ and dancing.
